I read somewhere they are difficult to paint ! they must have a lot of factory resin on them and need a couple of coats of primer. They are from a good brand & I know what they are not just toy soliders from out of the pound shop.

Thanks Hank, just ordered these now. I love the more recent Tamiya figures - great detail, clean mouldings and a great price, equivalent to $15 here in Thailand. 👍
Clear and nice. A couple of tips: I am no fan of the fleshtones, like at all - they are all too yellow for my taste, so instead I recommend Old Rose or Salmon Rose (Vallejo) as the base coat, using light flesh as highlight and any blasted brownish red for shade. This method of painting eyes come from Francois Verlinden, and is a pretty common way of painting eyes - and I approve of using light flesh for the white of the eyes, since the fleshtone is actually reflected in the eyes (most notable with people with dark skin - get yourself a good image and you'll see their whites have a clear brownish tint to them). However, the irises need to be larger, with only hint of whites visible - alternatively, paint a very thin dark line under the upper eyelid to mark the eyes. Oh, and at this scale, brown, preferably burnt umber, is used to paint the irises since the actual color can't be seen anyway. The only thing I actually question is painting the gasmask canister in aluminium - all metal equipment used was painted with that green, and that included the canister. The paint did wear off, but that is actually very well simulated with a drybrush. A couple of other hints: the binolulars should have straps as well as the gasmask canister where the lid opens. A good way to add something extra is to paint all the black leather, especially the Y-straps and boots with a semi-gloss coat when all is done to simulate at least leftover polish, but also leather's natural surface. All that aside, great painting tutorial, and I'll be sure to pick up the set myself.
Thanks. Great tips. Can I ask you, is it necessary to cover the figure in a glossy coat before adding the finishing Matt varnish? I tried that, but my figure remains glossy after the Matt varnish.
@@phalera Not really - a matt varnish should be sufficient, and I often don't bother with that either since my models are intended for display, not playing.

Nice Job Hank. I recently purchased this kit. IMO one of Tamiya`s best figure kits. Nice paint job. Never tried Vallejo paints but may give them a try.
I actually just got this kit! Outstanding work! Also, just a tip in reference to your diy painting base for your troops. I use tall bottle caps from like kombucha bottles and stuff and I used to super glue them to it, but a guy from my club suggested heavy duty double sided tape. You know, the type of stuff you could see Billy Mays picking up and engine block with? It’s pretty cheap at your local menards or home depot or whatever and can be cut to size. With super glue, I found if you bump the figure, it breaks free and now you are trying to re-glue a wet paint covered Wehrmacht soldier to a cap (or wood screw) and butchering all your work. The double sided tape has a little more play in it. And when you are done, he doesn’t look like he is wearing snow shoes! A win win in my book lol!
That's a very nice finish. I'm glad to see Tamiya has improved their model figures. I'm stuck with the earlier not that crash Hot German infantry and the Grenadiers sculpts that are not so great. I haven't bought any of the newer figures that have a better natural pose. Very nice work.👍🇭🇲🦘🐨✌️

Oh that's great! Figures aren't my strong suit either, honestly - I just try to improve a little bit with each one 😁 There's a link to the kit in the video description, but you can also find the set from most scale model distributors. Happy building! 👍
Did you use an enamel because of that particular wash you used? I have a Citadel wash I was gonna use with an acrylic thinner. The guy at the hobby store said it would work
Thank you! And that's great to hear - figures can definitely be daunting at first (I know I still need a lot of practice on mine), but it's all about learning as you go! Happy building 👍
Thanks for the tutorial. Now I can up my figure painting game that’s been on break for 17 years! I really like the details on the figures but my only gripe is that Tamiya never puts the rivets on the stahlhelm! Otherwise the figs are perfect.
Thanks! I believe it's mostly the viscosity of the paint - primers tend to be quite a bit thinner than their full-bodied paint counterparts, which means they go a bit further without adding thickness to your figure or vehicle 👍
Hi, just a question, for you Hank (or anyone here). I did all these steps, but after using the Matt varnish (I used Vallejo Matt 70.520 varnish with my air brush), the figure is still very glossy. What can I do? Thanks
What a fantastic video , I'm a total beginner, sorry to ask can you buy a complete paint set for these guys or do you buy separately? What brushes do you use please?
Amazing painting, just one sugestion , coming from a reenactor, the mes kit chips much quicker than the gas mask canister. My mes kit is practicly just aluminum while my gas mask canister ir 90% painted stil. Just a tip, take it or leave it, the figure stil looks amazing
Nice build. First time I've seen a thin slice of tape for the rifle/machine pistol sling. Is it sticky enough, or do you add a drop of CA glue for extra hold at the attach points? I'm thinking that this also might be useful for the strap between the gas mask canister and the molded strap on the figure torso.
Nice painting I don't normally use Tamiya figures I find there under scale than all other 1.35 figures so hard to mix n match them! Dragon's 1.35 3rd Gen are amazing figures but ICM have just rocked the boat with there new figures there just absolutely unbelievable for plastic! They look high detail aplone resin when painted up the German ww1 set is my favorite can't wait for more from ICM if we ever hear from them again! Could be a while being based in Ukraine!

I would reccomend sticking with a Tamiya kit - their StuG III & StuG IV are great simple kits that'll give you a nice result. The Tamiya Panzer IIIs are also a good choice! If you have a little more experience under your belt, the Tamiya Panther D is a fun challenge! Happy building 👍
I'm a new subscriber and just found this video. Very interesting and very informative! I only have a few 1/35 or 1/32 figures as I concentrated on 1/72 and 1/76 for wargaming. Any suggestions for a much smaller scale?
Thank you - I'm glad you enjoyed! For figures at that very small scale, I would say that washes are going to be your best friend. You can't see very many small details at that level, so blocking in the main colors with paint & then using a wash to help create artificial shadows on the sculpt should help give you a great result! Happy painting 👍
These figures are made of plastic, so Tamiya Extra Thin Cement works very well. If you're painting up a resin figure, however, I would recommend some super glue 👍
Thanks! So glad to hear - the reference images are all sourced from Wiki Commons (with either a creative commons license or in the public domain). There will be reference information at the bottom of each images to assist if you want to find them 👍
Great video. Another choice for the basic flesh tone which I like and you may like to try, is Vallejo Panzer Aces 341 Flesh Base - it gives a warmer, more tanned effect which is perhaps appropriate for troops, and avoids the slightly yellow jaundiced look! :-) You can lighten it up with other flesh colours of course.
I don't recall exactly, but I think it was Vallejo Tan Earth - I try to mix it up with rifle stocks to create some variation between figures, but any light tans generally work well for me!
This video did an awesome job at helping me improve my figure painting, the only question I have is what ratio do you use for thinning your paints and which matte varnish do you use? I've had really terrible results with the Vallejo matt varnish, it never turns out matte, it takes on more of a satin finish for me.
Hey there - glad to hear it! Thank you so much. I don't have a specific ratio that I use - instead I kind of mix with water on a wet palette as I go. I would recommend checking out one of my more-recent videos on figure painting (where I paint up a Luftwaffe pilot figure) where I go into detail about the process. For a varnish, I usually go for a combo of Vallejo matte & AMMO Lucky matte (starting with a coat of the Vallejo & finishing with a coat of the AMMO). I agree that the Vallejo product dries a bit satin, but I do like it's protective properties. A light AMMO coat at the end (which I find peels for me sometimes on it's own) works really well as a pair. Cheers & happy painting 👍
Thanks so much watching you do these figures made me go out and get a set. Question for you what type of spry did you use to lock in all the painted detail before weathering. Thanks again great video, you make it look so easy.
you don't do highlights or shadows on the figures clothing? The newer figures have great details where its easy to follow the creases to place shadows and highlights. still looks good, just wondering why you didn't since you know what you're doing?
It's all about personal preference - I don't get too complex with my figure painting at the moment; I just spend enough time on them to get a result that I'm happy with & looks good in this scale (and gives me some great little figures to sit with my vehicle builds). Painting highlights & lowlights is one technique, but I know a lot of other builders who just rely on sludge washes like this to achieve a dynamic light & shadow effect.
Hey there! I generally drop a bit of my paints on a wet palette & work from there (it helps keep a bit of moisture on the paint without diluting it too much)... I'm constantly experimenting with how much water to incorporate to my mix. As for the brushes, I have a video about "Best Gear for Beginners" where I talk about my brush set quite a bit if you'd like to check it out! There's a link for them there as well 👍
Hi there! Thank you for watching (and subscribing)! I use a pretty simple set of brushes that I picked up on Amazon - I'll leave the link here if you want to check them out.
I'll have to give it a go - thanks!
What colour did you use for the rifles, is it an ochre of some kind?
I don't recall exactly, but I think it was Vallejo Tan Earth - I try to mix it up with rifle stocks to create some variation between figures, but any light tans generally work well for me!
NICE WORK!
@@SpruesNBrews Thanks for the tips! I'll have to invest a wet palette, and I'll look into other matte varnishes.
The figures turned out great! What did you use to film???
Thank you! This was an older video shot on my Samsung Galaxy S20+ 👍
Добрый день ,Очень ,красиво ,прекрасные фигурки !!
спасибо за просмотр моего видео! 👍
Hi,
is it possible to know the colour shade used for the kar98k?
Thank you very much
Yes! I believe I used Vallejo Tan Earth for it 👍
This is really cool since i want to be a scale modeler too but i just dont have enough money for the models lol
Really great video...and good project.
Thank you very much! 👍
great details and guide..tqvm..👍🏼
Thanks very much!
Have you tried holding the figure when painting., so easy.
GREAT JOB
Thank you! 👍
Thanks so much watching you do these figures made me go out and get a set. Question for you what type of spry did you use to lock in all the painted detail before weathering. Thanks again great video, you make it look so easy.
Thanks you! The gloss seal coat is AK Interactive Intermediate Gauzy Agent 👍
you don't do highlights or shadows on the figures clothing? The newer figures have great details where its easy to follow the creases to place shadows and highlights. still looks good, just wondering why you didn't since you know what you're doing?
It's all about personal preference - I don't get too complex with my figure painting at the moment; I just spend enough time on them to get a result that I'm happy with & looks good in this scale (and gives me some great little figures to sit with my vehicle builds). Painting highlights & lowlights is one technique, but I know a lot of other builders who just rely on sludge washes like this to achieve a dynamic light & shadow effect.
@@SpruesNBrews ok, i was just wondering b/c you know what you're doing and i was curious why you omitted that part.
What colour did you use on the German helmets?
German Camo Dark Green works nicely! 👍
Down to earth information👍😀
Thank you! 👍
hello friend I have a question, do you use the paints directly from the pot? And what size brush do you use?
There's a link for them there as well 👍
Great tutorial, thanks.
Thank you! Glad it was helpful!
Buenas noches, estoy empezando a pintar miniaturas y espero hacerlo como tú algún día. Muchas gracias por tu trabajo tan alucinante. Un saludo
¡Oh muchas gracias! Realmente lo aprecio. Feliz pintura y disfruta, mi amigo 👍
Looking awesome!!! I always have trouble doing the eyes. Maybe a magnifying glass would be the solution in my case. 😏
Thanks! Yeah eyes are super tough - I could use some magnification myself 👍
Excellent tutorial
Thank you very much! 👍
Iv just subscribed to your channel what paint brushes do you use and are there natural hair nylon or synthetic hopefully you relpy
Hi there! Thank you for watching (and subscribing)! I use a pretty simple set of brushes that I picked up on Amazon - I'll leave the link here if you want to check them out. They've got nylon bristles & have worked very well for me so far:

Natural looking pose’s are these multi pose ?
There are five figures that come in the set, each with different equipment in various poses. I only painted one in this video as an example 👍
@spruesandbrews where can I find us intelligence figures?
