Fellow beekeeper myself for around 12 years, but what a great video perfectly describing the key elements of the hobby! I’ve always said that you will learn more and more about the bees from their behaviours because they will often go do their own thing out of blue and against the script - after all they can’t read the books! Know you’ll smash it Alex, keep up the good work!

My Dad kept bees , so I grew up with honey, beeswax furniture polish and even had a go at making candles. The other side was my mother, who had read your in old beliefs about bees being watchers for the family. She had us tell the bees whenever we were going away and when we came home. I had to introduce my husband to the hive when I was going to get married, all of which I did and thought it all rather cute. Then when my father died of cancer my mother took me to the hive and we told the bees. To my shock they were dead in a week. Not sure what that was about… but talk to your bees!

Great video. I started beekeeping in 2020, it’s a great thing to learn. My lessons learnt are don’t expect too much in your first year (or 2), especially paying your rent in honey. I have had no honey in 2 summers (although I’m in Aberdeenshire which is a hard location with a shorter season) Get good at your weekly inspections, recognising queen cells and preventative swarm control in early summer. We had a nightmare last year with swarming, but did get good at swarm collection! (hence the lack of honey). Make sure you have a polynuc for each hive (for splits and artificial swarming) and an extra one for captured swarms. Get a mentor from your bee club to help with inspections and tag on to a couple of their apiary inspections. Get yourself a second colony as soon as you can. I’m sure in the South of England you’ll get a nuc in May. Good luck, hope you still have time for fishing.

A few things to help you out with your hives. Idk if you have your hive is on a tilt but tilt the back end up. That will help with moisture. The bees will cause moisture as well when they are clustered. Next a good rule of thumb is to have your hive going into winter with two deeps full of honey. I also do mite treatments in the winter when the days are in the 40 degrees F. I use a osiclic acid (sorry on the poor spelling 😂). Some people use it and some don’t just do what you find right. Also feeding shims are handy for putting out large amount of fondant during the winter. Also feed your big hives because if you don’t they’ll starve still sometimes. We use fondant and in your rapid feeder we put sugar into it. The condensation of the bees will form a sugar cake (this is for the winter months).Make sure to keep feeding until there is a good pollen flow, we keep pollen out year round that the bees can work. Once the pollen flow hits they won’t touch it. Also to help prevent swarming add a super to your hive for room or go and split them yourself but you’ll have to find somewhere to keep a split for a while (second year bee keeping is where you really get into it). Good luck on your hives, bee keeping is like anything else everyone has their preferences, and more than one way works. This stuff helps us with our hives we run. Good Luck it’s a fun hobby.

3:14 have you discovered the delights of hive beetles yet? Unfortunately mesh floors is a big way for them to get in, they fly and land on the hive outside then crawl around to any open surface they can reach. Projecting entrances that require hoovering to access are best to minimise their ability to get in.

Alex, nice video. i'd suggest doing some research on hive insulation. There are a number of youtube videos from well known beekeepers about the best ways to insulate a hive over winter. The general view seems to be that the top of the hive should be the best insulated to avoid condensation forming on the underside of the crown board and dripping on the bee's. My approach is to cut insulation board to fit on top of the crown board with a hole cut in the middle to place fondant in. Its made a big difference to the condensation build up. Having condensation on the side walls of the hive is less of an issue because it drips down the sides and out through the entrance/mesh floor instead of dripping on the bees. I have clear perspex crown boards so I can check on the bees over winter without opening the hives, you would be surprised how much condensation can form on the crown board, a 50mm sheet of celotex stops the condensation build up almost entirely.
Just my thoughts of course, glad you are enjoying being a beekeeper.

Alex your Vidoes are very relaxing to watch. Didn't think I would watch a bee keeping video, but I really enjoyed it, very interesting 👍

That was brilliant Alex, best content I’ve watched on Bees and so far your best video. Honey for board, they’d be mad to turn it down 😂👍

Your channel Alex reminds me off Jack Hargreaves, out of town series on TV from the 1970s, diverse content, often about things I haven't a clue, but great to watch people do. 5 🌟 video.
    P. S if you haven't heard about him, you can find a few episodes on here,

Jack was a fascinating chap and I vaguely remember him when I was a nipper. I have since watched many of his old programmes on yt. Cheers bro.
