    Bought my 5.7 2005 Ram new. It's had the tick at least since 50,000 miles. Religious maintenance & up keep. Royal purple 5w20. Now @ 200,000 miles. Still ticks, but runs perfectly. I decided after looking around forums that it's just a Hemi trait. These engines tick and have ticked for years it seems.

    These motors ticked DECADES ago when they didn't have cylinder deactivation or variable valve timing.

    Ok so I bought a brand new 2020 Ram Bighorn with the 5.7 Hemi without the booster. I've had it exactly 40 days today. It has 1,400 miles on it. Started it up today and started rapping like crazy. Went away after 30 seconds. Waited 2 hours and remote started it so I could video if it rapped again. It did! Now has to go in for an overnight at the dealer service dept so they can cold start it in morning. Either way, a sick feeling after spending a huge chunk of change. Warm and fuzzy new truck feeling gone, sick feeling setting in. Why should s brand new truck need to be fixed?

    • @dsturbed2c
      @dsturbed2c 4 года назад

      what came of your truck?

    • @TheNewenglandboys
      @TheNewenglandboys 4 года назад

      @@dsturbed2c So I talked with the service tech at the dealership. He said it was a normal phenomenon with the Hemi. I asked, so what will you do after I leave the truck overnight? He said he would listen to the tick but there was really no fix, and really nothing they could do. it's nothing to worry about! Still not warm to the idea of a brand new truck having an engine noise, he explained about another guy that came in and insisted they fix his brand new truck for the same reason. So they tore the motor down, replaced cam, rockets, and lifters under warranty of course. The guy took the truck back home and a few days later experienced the same thing! Well, at that point I decided I wasn't interested in having service mechanics tearing into my new motor so I said screw it and drove it home. The truck rides and drives beautifully and occasionally when I start it I still get that tick for a few seconds. But it is what it is I guess. I'll honestly say that it's the nicest truck bar none that I've had and I've had the EcoBoost F150 and the Sierra Denali with only 42,000 miles I traded for this truck. The power and transmission are awesome. That said, if the ticking worsens or I end up having an issue, I'll trade it and be done with it. The good part is that I got a Zero interest rate on it so as I pay it down, every cent is coming off the principle which should keep the depreciation valuation in line with what I owe. That will help in the event I have to dump it. But truthfully, I really love everything else about the truck. The floor storage, the room, the ride, like I said, it really is a great truck. As a side note, because I've seen videos of some people having rocker and cam issues, I've been keeping in mind a product called "motorkote". If you can, check out: "Project Farm" video on motorkote. Pretty amazing and maybe the answer for this engine. If you check it out, let me know your thought on it! Thanks

      @@TheNewenglandboys the hemi will tick for a short while on cold start up, its the pushrods getting pressure and filling the lifter. its normal, my LS does it also. A 2020 is a good truck, get the extended warranty if your worried.

    My 2012 2500 got the tick at about 160k miles. At 170k it threw a misfire on cylinder 7. Turned out to be the cam lobes worn past spec. New cam and lifters and its runs like a champ again. But yeah the tick is usually something with a lifter/cam issue.

    I own a 2016 1500 with the 5.7L,
    4 weeks ago, cool Florida day, I got the tick. Loud. Turned off the motor, checked the oil, high. Started the motor, watched my oil pressure gauge at nominal 50psi. Never falling below 40psi. Tick went away, until the next morning and pretty much every morning until I got to the dealer. They're Lead Mech comes out and said it was probably an exhaust leak because he didn't hear the tick. Left the truck, He heard the tick, got the call for permission to go ahead and tear down the motor because they are replacing the cam and lifters.

    I just rebuilt my 5.7 Hemi and got a bad lifter from the factory. Ticking after 500 miles. OEM lifters from Dodge made in Germany. Going to put in a set of Hellcat lifters instead. Regular production 5.7 lifters are junk and the pushrod angle makes me wonder why these valve trains don't wear out sooner. Bottom end however, looked brand-new at 130,000 miles, like it was just built. Not one single wear surface on any bearing

    My dad's 2004 Durango 5.7 finally blew up this morning. Started ticking at around 180,000 miles and he drove it like that for miles. Made it all the way to 230,000 and he started it this morning and it finally gave. He said the car shook hard and starting knocking loud and it smelled like gasoline. I would be willing to say it lost the valve seat. Either way about it these hemis are bad for ticking and it can be catastrophic if it doesn't get fixed.

      Steven Martin MOTORKOTE! I bought a brand new 2005 Rumble Bee, 5.7. 34 miles on it when it left the dealer. Took it home, treated the engine with Motorkote Hyper Lubricant, and started running it hard. I kept it 3 years, and blew the doors off every Chevy & and Ford 4x4 that challenged me. When I sold it, it still ran like new. Keep oil changed with Mobil one synthetic, and every 50,000 miles treat all fluids with Motorkote, ( except brake fluid), and that Hemi will live on...

    damn, you know your shit. are the ticks in these cases only at start up, or are these more problematic ticks one that tick all the time. my 2012 tick lasts for only a few minutes at start up then goes away. thanks

    • @audiophiliac1221
      @audiophiliac1221  7 лет назад

      nyinfamous2k2 sounds like an exhaust leak in your case. As the exhaust manifold heats up the gasket expands and covers the leak. Valvetrain ticks are persistent and don't tend to go away and in some cases get worse when the oil thins out as it gets hotter.

    • @aaronvoss748
      @aaronvoss748 4 года назад +1

      Most don't have a problem at all. If they do this is this is normally what it is. Fact is, most automakers have made our vehicles exponetially more reliable though it doesn't seem like it. We drive alot more than we used to. I find 2-3 year old vehicles all over the place with over 100k miles on them with almost no problems. Hemis are great motors! I had an 02 Ford explorer once. Replace the head gaskets and I figured adjust the lifters, man it purred better than new. I really hated that thing but after that it was reliable. Chucked it a 300k and it still ran great! Have two hemis now. Really racking up miles, also cummins with a half a mil.. I'm not a mechanic but I do all my own work. Mostly when something fails it is because I neglected it. Manufacturers make plenty of mistakes but mostly it os operator error.

      Gunner16325 if it's related to the tick you might have a flat cam which is common and your valves can't open all the way. But an underpowered engine can be caused by a lot of things. Best thing to do is see if there are any codes in the pcm and check your fuel trim to see if it's running rich or lean.

      Cheap roller lifters that get stuck. Most you can do is use full synthetic oil and maybe find a zinc and phosphorus additive. Some oils are API SL (for vehicles 2004 and under) and have more zinc and phosphorus already. Modern oils have less of this in order to prolong cat converter life.
