I've had a PRS DGT for the past three years and it's been the only PRS that I've ever bonded with. It can do vintage Les Paul, Strat and Tele tones and as you've said, the neck is sublime. I feel ambivalent about the release of the SE because previously the DGT was only a core US model sold at a premium. On reflection I'm glad that it will now be exposed to a wider audience.
PRS has nailed the price point on this guitar. Super high quality yet still affordable to most. And it stays in tune which is equally as important. These pickups sound like something out of a much higher priced rig without sacrificing just all-around great tone. Kudos to Paul, David and ALL of the PRS staff and builders.
Thanks Paul, for making me want to cry yet again. I can barely keep up with All the cool models released in the last few years. Then you go and release the SE Silver Sky, & now this SE DGT! You're killing me! At least I have my SE Custom Semihollow in Blue Matteo to soothe my heartache, for now. I think I got a case of the PRS SE bues! Sniff, sniff!
It is. Grissom equates the tapped bridge sound to a Tele, and the tapped neck to a Strat neck pickup, and I agree. I have an ‘08 Goldtop DGT that’s got its battle scars, and sounds great. They’re super fun to play, and are very responsive; The examples of it doing low volume feedback are exactly what mine does.
Luvverly! I shall be ordering one as soon as my fav UK retailer tells me they're available!! PRS guitars have never been on my radar, in over fifty years of playing and (squandering), but recently I bought a PRS SE Custom and in two weeks bought another. Excellent guitars.
@@Ottophil Grissom says that’s because he plays on the bridge pickup 95% of the time when playing live. He wants that pickup’s control under his little finger.
Wow, that's close!! Thanks for the honesty JB!! In my circle of fav players you are right in there with Buk, GT, Jedd and Vince!! Appreciate you Brother!! 8) --gary
Wow what a guitarist. I think you can make any guitar sound good. Now if you love this guitar I’m convinced mere mortals can be very happy with the tone and versatility of this guitar. I just bought one and now I’m really looking for feedback and this makes me happy with my choice after 15 minutes in a store. No regrets.
I've got a C24 Piezo and a Tremonti... While the C24 was more expensive and can do pretty much everything I've had it for almost 5 years and just haven't bonded with it. Fell in love with the Tremonti day one though... on a livestream a few years ago I asked a question and Paul said "it sounds like you really need a DGT." The day the first video came out I called and pre-ordered this SE DGT, mine should be here in the next couple of weeks. Got the Goldtop with moons like what you are playing. Stoked that it's so close to the Core. Yea I know it's not going to be exactly the same but it seems pretty close, those pickups are very impressive! Fantastic review, phenomenal playing as well!
Have to say that SE model is VERY impressive, kudos! However, having said that, my 2011 core model would have to be pried from my cold, dead hands. Really glad though that PRS has made the DGT available to a wider audience. It's one hell of an axe!
Im a DGT Core owner. I absolutely love the guitar. PRS should sell the DGT pickups. They are super sweet. The SE better have good pickups or it wont do. Copying a body is the easy part.
Sometimes, I just don't really care what kind of guitare or device John is testing ; I just want him to play it again and again and again...until eternity's end...
I'm just a guitar loving hobbyist but played off and on for almost 50 years. Always had Gibsons and Fenders and their associated foreign lessers. I bought my first PRS (Zach Myers SE) about 2 months ago and everything else will be up for sale soon. Love the reviews and thanks (as always) for the quickie "what can I strum at Guitar Center" lessons!!!
I just bought one of these. I own an American made Stratocaster. I wanted to get a humbucker guitar for a second electric. I played and looked at everything. I had a budget of $2K. All the Gibson guitars in that range were okay to shoddy. I saw this DGT and played it. I was amazed. I don't really care for the birds on the neck aesthetic but this PRS DGT SE didn't have any. It is so well crafted I couldn't pass it up. There were only two left. Incredible guitar and looks beautiful.
I'm glad the PRS SE DGT is great, but I knew it would be, and John is the best guitar journalist and youtuber there is, nobody has more passion and personality.
What stands out to me, is that this is the first video where it appears you may actually have the window open and sun coming in. Great playing as usual.
Hey John, great video. I've been waiting for this guitar to come out. Controls are like an old Flying V. A lot of people have commented on the PRS coil taps sounding better than the usual fare, which is cool, about time. David really seems to love the whole guitar, pickups included. Possibly the best SE so far. Great job; and your playing just gets better.
Thank you PRS and Dave! SE DGT for the blue collar player. Also to Cort in Indonesia for building amazing guitars, truly today’s version of Japan quality
great job john!I sold my 2008 dgt goldtop 3 years ago and regret it - especially seing the price inflation. I'm gonna get me one of these after seeing your review.
"John. John, JOHN wake up. QUICK. You have to record a PRS demo. NOW. Do you want some product for your hair? No? Nothing? No pomade? Maybe a matte clay, or styling paste? Are you sure? OK. well, you're on in 5, 4, 3, 2..." I kid! Johnny, we love ya, great demo!
I'd love it if they made some classic PRS models with single coils. They've made a few but not enough. I love the PRS form factor but I want single coils.
The DGT is the only PRS model ive been interested in. I already have a few top shelf/custom shop instruments and being only curious the core model just seems like too steep of dive but the SE, definitely getting one when theyre out
Just got one and I can't believe how good it is. It's everything I wish my Les Paul could be. Very versatile. No, it can't get true strat tones. But that's not what this guitar is for. Love the feel of the neck. And the sustain blows everything I own out the water. Best PRS I've played. Best guitar under $1k without question.
Nice!! PRS is killing my wallet. Just got a Core 10-Top McCarty 594. Picking up one of these too. Sold 5 closet dwellers for the Core, and have a couple more that just became Reverb candidates.
Beautifully done demo! When comparing your 2008 model to this SE, I think I remember in the JG interview, that he said he had PRS pattern the SE after his favorite 2010 model. So that neck and the pick ups were likely different than the 2008 anyway. (They had been tweaking guitars for 20 years!)
PRS is making life this year difficult. I was interested in this and planning to buy a Standard or Custom 24 SE but they also came out with a McCarty 594 SE with LT 58/15 S pickups in both Custom and Single cut. Three guitars I’ve wanted out in SE line now. My wallet crying. 😢
John I walked right past you on Broadway last Sept. I wanted to yell “Rig Rundown!!!” but then I realized my wife would think I’m crazy. Anyway I was a little starstruck.
I was always impressed by the quality of those SE's.. No doubt the American made are a cut above. However, at this level of quality, the player, more than the guitar, along with a good amp, will make all the difference..
Absolutely. This is what I like with PRS, they really let the musician to express him/herself. I have SE, Core, and I played Private Stock and they’re all worth their price tag (even the Private Stock, as crazy as it could be). But it’s the law of diminish return, the higher you get in range (SE, S2, Core, Private Stock), the less major difference you will get because the lower model is already so great. I wanted to purchase a Singlecut guitar, I tried $3,000 Gibson Les Paul in stores, none of them were any good. I’m sure you could find great ones, but you have to try many to THE good one. So I tried a SE 245 and the first one I tried was perfect. I thought I was just lucky, so I tried couple of others (friends of mine also bought SEs) and theirs were good too. That’s the major thing with PRS, it’s Quality and Consistency. You could even order a guitar blindly online without ever try it and you won’t be disappointed. And if you don’t like the guitar, you will surely not like any other of the same model. It’s not a hit or miss situation like it could be so much with other brands. That’s why now, I’m pretty invested in buying PRS only guitars… I never had to resell any of those guitars.
I orded my SE Mira with out playing any PRS before. Great feel, great build quality, great components, Great sound. They used brass saddles on my tailpiece, for way under 1000. Just high quality instruments
Looking forward to giving it a “shot” through my sound system.. in all honesty, the sound I was hearing was not what I’m after.. I still want to give the instrument a GO.. Mr Gris is one of my favorites..
The DG tone I would be chasing is the one he got on John Mellencamp's "Whenever We Wanted" album, especially songs like "Melting Pot" and "They're So Tough"
Looks like it's the ultimate "cover band do it all bring one guitar to the gig" guitar? Very nice sounds great ( of course they all sound great with you playing them John) I was hoping they would come out with an SE version of this maybe now I will pick one up myself.
Earlier today I was wondering when you would be able to get your hands on. I wonder if he has the volume knobs set for volume swells on that back pickup
I've a 19 Goldtop that I love. Use the splits all the time but I can't believe how little u leave on the table by going with the SE. It sounds really good and the pups articulate incredibly. Why not try one of these before going full core monty? Right? Doubt you'd sell it....
John, come on, you’re nifty enough to break out that thumb technique and drone the low E string on “Little Wing!” Come on, man! 😂🤪😂. Great video - thanks
I watched the Fireside Chat last week and they said the release date was “TODAY” Jan 10, how did John happen to get this guitar to release a video ON JAN 10, 2023 Today. I’m just curious !!!!!
Great tone out of the SE. David Grissom has been a favorite since he played with Joe Ely. John you sound great and where did you get that guitar strap? Keep up the great work.
John, As always another fabulous presentation, and I believe Santa is going to bring me one of these for Christmas. Btw, Where did you get that guitar strap who made it? I want to get one of those also.
