    Part 7: • Albert Hughes: Jerry H...
Part 9: • Albert Hughes on Seein...
    --------
Albert Hughes shared an inside look into the history and conception of 'Menace II Society,' discussing the thought process behind the shocking opening scene of the film. According to Hughes, the scene where the Korean shop owners are killed in the opening was a subconscious response to real-life racial tensions at the time and the death of Latasha Harlins, a Black teenager who was shot by a Korean store owner. The objective of the scene was to shock and disturb viewers to indicate the gritty narrative of the film. Hughes additionally mentioned how the film was also a response to other popular films from the same era like 'Boyz N the Hood' and 'New Jack City.' There were also revelations about casting; notably, it was confirmed that MC Eiht was considered for a role in 'Menace II Society.'

Menace’s authenticity is what blew the other films away. Caine was a criminal and a killer yet somehow the audience sees him as a good guy and empathizes with him as a human. That comes from the film’s script, the confident vision of the directing, and the brilliant performances by the cast. It is a classic.
