New York City, March 5th, 2015. A Delta Airlines MD-88 is on final approach to Runway 13 at La Guardia international airport. The city is being battered by a snowstorm, and the pilots of this flight are cutting it close with their decision to land. Their aircraft is heavy, the runway is short, and when they break out of the clouds just seconds before landing, they discover that it’s covered with snow. There is now no margin for error. If the pilots make any mistakes, their aircraft could slide off the runway, and into the freezing waters of Flushing Bay. What neither pilot knows is that on this morning, a combination of bad weather and psychological factors would conspire with a unique feature of the MD-88s design, to make a safe landing all but impossible....

Someone saying they like to fall asleep to your content is a VERY big compliment. It means your voice is soothing and you balance the audio levels well. Stupidly trying to fall asleep to something that is interesting to you is actually not conducive to you actually getting to sleep as your brain will rend to refocus as you attempt to fall asleep but it's something common amongst those who do choose to fall asleep listening to content and on the whole those of us who do ignore this factor and are very picky on the content we use to do so.
On the upside if somebody loads up a playlist of your content ( which is what I do) then at least your view count is getting a good hit. I'll fall asleep listening to your videos and then during the day/ evening i'll go back and listen to ones that actually played while I was asleep and remember to click the like button at the same time.
thank you!
Why not fall asleep listening about aviation incidents ?😂
It really depends on the people, sometimes people just cant help to fall asleep when they feel comfortable
I'm on the opposite, always on the edge of my seat when the ending is unknown, haha
You kinda tapped into opposite types of audeinces with your calm presentation of dire events, so kudos!
I need something interesting to distract my brain, and the guy is perfect! With his pleasant, steady voice, I sometimes fall asleep too. Then I watch it again the next day. He's clear and concise while being thorough.
Don't be offended I can totally see how one can claim to fall asleep during your videos, it's because your voice is extremely relaxing. There is great warmth and charm your voice possesses. The cadence in your voice is the perfect formula to relax and Lullaby someone into a nice slumber, regardless of what you read. In fact you may want to contact those same sites that you advocate for and help them with their content as a voice-over to keep it real with you. You've got that thing...I too have fallen asleep to your video, of course I watch them again because the content is so addictive and amazing...keep knockin us out bro!
It sounds like being damned by faint praise, but we all know exactly what you mean! And, while perhaps not the intent of the creator, nonetheless valuable for that😏❤
I have to agree with all of this... I too have fallen asleep to his videos, but not just his... I of course rewatch them again as well 😅
This is my go to insomnia cure!! But then I have to re watch it but hey more viewership for you? Love it bro !
Every night I fall asleep watching these vidds, so relaxing, but so interesting and sometimes horrific too
I fall asleep to these videos all the time but only after having watched about an hours worth of them
The "falling asleep to your videos" thing is actually a compliment. Though it may be paradoxical, falling asleep to videos requires for their content to be interesting (because one of the reasons people listen to videos in order to fall asleep is that the videos silence their own annoying thoughts, and that only works when the content is good). That, in combination with a calm, friendly and pleasant narrator voice, creates the sleepy effect.
THIS ONE
It can't be overstated how MUCH I (for one) appreciate that you delve thoroughly into lesser known and less disastrous incidents in aviation, rahter than blindly chasing THE most shocking or horrific and harrowing misadventures and disasters, which are usually more famous by rote.
AND you have a strong mellow voice that works well with almost any content. Some people are going to find it relaxing, and that's perfectly okay. Your timbre and enunciation is consistent and steady, with a pace that neither rushes through nor drags on, and with no peculiar pauses or poor attempts at "dramatic flair". You might be surprised at how many people simply don't manage such consistency in their own narrations and some of those idiosyncrasies can get annoying. Hope this helps... and you should find a certain pride in the fact that people like to fall asleep to your voice, even narrating something arguably awful to think about.
If you take up coaching or instruction of any kind, you'll have a natural talent for keeping nervous energies relatively low and maintaining a "consummate professionalism" just for being present. ;o)
Thank you for the very kind words 😄

What a great comment, g'narth! That kind of feedback will be welcome by any Podcaster. It's detailed, it's positive and offers constructive criticism.
As for Green Dot, this is yet another brilliant production. I'm just blown away by the editing and the clearness of your images -- just superb.
Thanks for a great presentation.
My cousins and aunt were in the flight. I still remember the desperation of my uncle while he was waiting for news about the incident.
Btw my little cousin was 8 at the time and as soon as she got out of the plane she started to play with snow like nothing had happened 😂
She came visit us today and we remembered this story, so I had to search if anyone had made a video on it.
I was based in nyc at the time... My roommate was a delta mechanic and went to the jet, stored in the AA hangar at LGA. The pressure vessel was badly breached, which is why the airframe was scrapped
I’m glad the snow removal guys reported the crash and everyone survived, cannot imagine how terrifying this ordeal was for everyone.
They could've easily died after the plane was stopped. It's alarming how slow everything was. That fuel spill could've blown the plane
Yep especially as it would’ve been easy to assume that the tower alreadly knew what was going on

@@squirrelhallowino29my cousin says that the flight attendant saw the leak and began to panic, and that when they looked outside fron the window they saw pieces of the wings stacked in the snow like they were trees
Anyone living in the North East has experienced how cars skid off the roads due to snow. Watching the plane skidding off like that was stressful ,I can't imagine what the pilots and all on board experienced . And then there are those few who complain when it snows during the holiday season and they get stranded on airports. 100x better than risking everyone's safety.
You voice is relaxing, but definitely not boring. I've watched a number of videos from other air accident channels, and yours is hands down the best that I've found. I really appreciate the deep dive analyses and the explanations of the science and mechanics of flying. Anyone can read an NTSB report into a microphone, but you add a lot more - I really learn from your vids. I also like that you choose some of the incidents that weren't as sensational, but resulted in concrete changes in practice at the time. Watching this channel feels like watching the aviation evolve and learn from its mistakes over the years.
Thank you for the very kind words! Many more video on the way 🙌
So when you need the thrust reversers the most, you can’t use them. Great design!
Perhaps I missed it, but why was the runway covered with so much more snow than expected? Isn’t the crucial error here that the removal crew and air traffic control were out of sync?
I wonder if anyone else got the feeling or suspicion that the pilot was being used as a scapegoat for someone else’s responsibility in the control tower, for lack of accurate information on the condition of the runway?
Yeah. And it looks like the margin of safety should be increased, too. Too many of these accidents begin with "conditions are within safety limits, but barely".
Was thinking the same. Control tower asleep at the wheel.
Absolutely agree, runway coated in snow after advising the pilot it had just been cleared, and then clearing other planes to lane on said slippery runway before hearing from them or investigating, should’ve sent people to make sure the runway was clear first
Yeah why did they say the runway was in good condition when it was covered in snow?
@@boas_ Because they were overloaded with planes that were lined up to land, and more on the way. And time is money as they say, and delays cost money, and piss’s people off.
And that also didn’t mean that it was necessarily going to be a catastrophe, and odds were fair that they’d land safely anyway, and what’s a little sliding around going to hurt?
I personally come to this channel when I'm going to bed. Very calming voice, no weird sound effects. I just click a video and lay down. I watch your video's almost as soon as the come out while awake, so I'm not missing anything. It's like having reruns on. It helps me sleep and gives the channel views. Win win.
Usually takes me 3-4 nights on the same video. I can nearly get a week of sleep out of one video before getting more and needing to move on haha😂
As a black man, I am offended by this kind of shit
@@FK-we1dp as a black AND white, Asian… I’m conflicted 😐
so sorry @@ianmatthewkline8279
Yes the Captain did lose the plane, and he used the incorrect recommendations to land in those conditions.
But as fate would have he did not go into the bay and all the passengers and crew survived.
I'm thinking that if he followed the correct procedures the plane would have gone into he bay and who knows the consequences regarding the passengers and crew.
Good video.
Yes. Marathons of your videos help me unwind and fall asleep. Don't take that as criticism! Love the content and your hard work definitely does not go unnoticed!
I think this is the best aviation channel out there! I ❤️ it!

Love your detailed graphics work but, honestly, your handling of the actual aviation involved is first cabin; cleanest, clearest most pleasing presentation in the genre. (I suspect that you've spent a good deal of time in and around airplanes) Keep up the great work!

I remember when this happened. There was question about the practice of engaging TRs upon MLG touchdown, prior the NLG touchdown. I dont know if this was mentioned in the final NTSB report, but some people were claiming to have seen this jet do the same. It was a common practice, and still is for many Russian jets and US military jets. Obviously, you slow down faster but sometimes, you might slow down in the direction you want.
I remember hearing the recordings from VASAviation, and hearing how ATC couldnt believe it, even as Car 100 shut down LGA.
Don’t take any of that as disrespectful sir. Your voice is ridiculously calming and I could total see how someone could close their eyes and fall asleep to your voice.
Just know that your work is top notch and you have followers for as long as you do this! Best of luck in the future sir.
You refer to "American Airlines Dispatcher(s) several times (05:51) approximate time stamp 2nd time. This is a Delta flight, I suspect he was talking to Delta's dispatch. You didn't think we were paying attention, going to sleep maybe. I need to get that Endel application out of my mind. By the way any constructive criticism on my part is in recognition and admiration for your EXCELLENT work. Your strong aviation background and knowledge is evident. I spent 12 years flying the MD-80/82 series jet; 4 years in the right seat and 8 years in the left seat. Your graphics and depictions are AMAZINGLY realistic. You produce some of the finest aviation videos available on RUclips. - Respectfully!
Ah, good catch! Thanks for the correction.
@@GreenDotAviation I noticed that too. . . 😉😉

It always amazes me when I find a channel like this where someone has put together such an amazing niche and works it for “free”. Absolutely amazing channel, thank you.
Thank you so much! It's great to bring together a community of people who share my interests :)
Falling asleep to your voice is a sort of compliment. you have a very soothing voice that is easy to listen to. the subject matter is fascinating, and you don't hype it up for drama. re-watching a playlist of you is just the right combo of soothing and interesting that it is a good wind down after my very physically active and mind numbing job.
--this!! Yes. You convey it perfectly!!
Amazing animation, subscribed!!! On the incident, I experienced a better pilot in an alomst equal situation. Austrian used a lot of MD-80s and on a winter day I was onboard a flight from Vienna to Prague. The pilot made a fly over of the runway in Prague since he (literally said this on the intercom!) didn’t trust ATC who said the runway was cleared. On fly-over he also saw too many uncleared patches, crosswinds and he was aware that this runway had a worse surface co-efficient (grooves helping with braking and water drainage) than the alternate runway in Prague which was not available at that time. He initiated TO-GA and went back to Vienna. If the pilot is concerned he should never attempt to land. We flew hours later again, with better weather and a cleared runway.
“Some people like falling asleep to my videos”
- Me listening to this whilst falling asleep.
Please don’t take it the wrong way, you have such a calming voice that’s all!
I'm familiar with the LaGuardia Airport having grown up and was even nearby at the time of the accident. The margin for error in NYC airspace is pretty slim esp with a small airport surrounded by water and high residential buildings on approach. The snow storm that day was going from light to moderate to heavy patches back to moderate. The winds were moderate as well.
Yet again, great subject matter + superb story telling and presentation. A Green Dot release is always something to look forward to, thanks!
Thank you Simon!
i love the style of this channel , keep going !
I have never personally commented that I fall asleep to his videos even though I do. I just feel surprise due to the amount of people who do the same thing. I feel it has to do with your calm voice, the music and especially the intro music. Apart from that it feels like a bed time story for me!!
Well researched, crisply presented, and well illustrated..Great content as always. And yes - I do often watch your or mentour pilot’s videos late at night, and often fall asleep - in which case, I make it a point to continue next day from where I blanked out. Keep up the good work
“Fall asleep”. Incredible! I could never fall asleep on your videos especially because your graphics are absolutely awesome!
Alan Watts was a great speaker, much wisdom. Life is indeed a musical thing, and we should all be dancing and singing while the music is playing :D
is there a debate if the plane was even able to stop on the runway under those conditions?
when the plane was (partially) in full reverse, scraping a wall and still only came to a hold at the very last bit of that air field?
That's what I was wondering, had the pilot not have applied full reverse thrust, would the plane even have stopped in time?
I love this channel! I love ❤️ the way you present it and the fact that I don’t have to pause the video to read the print on the screen and your presentation is spot on! Thank you for having the best aviation channel out there! 👏😃
i feel like inadvertently the captain messing up and going full power on reverse thrust is actually what saved them.
crashing into the side and scraping along it would have created an insane amount of friction, and even with that added extra friction AND the higher reverse thrust they still just BARELY didnt fly off the end into the water
This just made my morning ! Watching from Derry 🇮🇪
You do a good job. (Your presentations are clear and comprehensible for my level, and my English). Thanks.
Thank you!

I love your videos and your calming voice. I constantly check your channel for new videos and it’s great when I find an old one I’ve not seen before. I’ve not flown for almost 4 years due to Covid and now the deterioration of my 15 year old daughter’s health.
Your videos are great! I have seen them all many times. Falling asleep just means how relaxed we get by listening to your voice, but we keep watching because we love the content, and we also love to sleep listening to it. You will eventually have more than a million followers for sure! Don't stop!
Your voice is very soothing. I'm not sleeping, but I'm dealing with something stressful. Oddly, I find you describing horrifying air disasters very relaxing.
Tried the sponsor. Was very nice. Thanks for recommending this. Also, love the vids. Keep them coming!
Glad it was good! And thank you, more on the way :)
Why didn't they just divert bearing in mind the tolerances on wind, runway contamination and the tail wind all seem to be telling them to divert. JFK and Newark are close by.
Was there any reason given for the delay in evacuating the aircraft?
I am just guessing, but I'd assume the weather would be similarly bad at JFK and Newark . They do have longer runways there tho so I did also wonder why they didn't divert.
my cousin was there and said it had to do with the fuel leak, at least that was what the crew told them
At 4:18 the pilots "requested weather from American Airlines dispatch." Why would a Delta crew request weather from another airline?
What about covering valujet 592 or Swissair 111. Or the lesser known Korean Air cargo 8509 or Air Algerie flight 702P? I would love to hear those.
Thank you, I’ll look into these
Your videos are very interesting and educational. Your voice is calming. The cadence of your voice calms me and I can focus on what your story.

Would the plane have stopped safely had the thrust reversers been at a lower level or not used? I'm not so sure the pilot made a mistake.
Yes, if they had been at 1.3 EPR or less, the rudder would have remained effective, and the plane would not have slid off to the side.
@@GreenDotAviation But the runway was totally contaminated, which throws their numbers out the window. I don't know if he was overly committed to the approach or what but as soon as I saw a white runway surface I would have rejected the approach.
@@GreenDotAviation It would not have slid to the side, but might it have slid off the end?
@@northmaineguy5896 Yes exactly! But maybe he was holding for too long to make it to an alternate airport (possibly outside of NYC) at that point. Going around and coming back to the same runway wouldn't have made much sense either. It was all bad options, that's why he reacted the way he did..
@@ajinkyamehere5365 True but you would take a longer runway any day over ending up in the drink.

Back in the 90's I was flying every week somewhere in the contiguous 48 states. I was told by several pilots that the DC-9, MD-80, and MD-88 series planes were very difficult on the ground. But, in the air those were the smoothest planes I travelled on. I always hated the 737 and 757, but the 767 and DC-10 were great. Unfortunately, I never got to travel on the beautiful 747.
Well done videos!
