Anyone who can draw like the Buscemas and Jack Kirby is A OK in my book, I'd like to see Frenz take on the Mona Lisa. Great Artwork.

Ron Frenz immediately struck me as channelling Sal Buscema (whose work I like) but with his own slant on the art.
I hope Thor never smashes his hammer on top of my head! That Celestial must have needed a Moon-size aspirin for the headache.

From around #300, most of the stores in my area refused to get Thor. Must have been a Bible belt thing, even though stores in the next town would. But being a kid, I had to just get what I could get. I had all the issues just shy of Simonson's run in #337, but those issues were almost impossible to get without going 100 miles to a comic store. So, I missed out on most of Simonson's run. Around #382, stores started getting Thor again and I started picking it up. Which was a bad time, since a great run was ending and we got those fill-in issues. I bailed out again until the Celestial story, which I really didn't like. I felt like Defalco was doing a disservice to the story told by Jack Kirby and Roy Thomas. I doubt either of those writers would have just had the failed judgment of the Celestials be a big happy ending.
I will say that once the book got to #390, there is a big improvement. And from around #395, I was totally hooked! That big story involving Seth, Surtur, and the return of Odin was fantastic! It didn't hurt that the art looked like Kirby, because that was what got me to Thor in the first place. Honestly, Defalco had some hits and misses, but for the most part, I enjoyed his next few years on Thor. Way better than his tenure as Editor-in-Chief. I know he answered to people, but his choices literally almost led to the downfall of Marvel. But as a writer, he's pretty solid.

I think that one-shot in the future was part of the inspiration for what we see concerning Thor's hammer in Old Man Logan.

In the 79s there was an annual (?), at least a double sized issue that had the Norse gods vs the Greek gods. It was amazing and made all those mythology books as a kid really pay off. The comics that rewarded a kid for reading other things were the very best. You felt like you were really in the club.

Ron Frenz said in an interview that he copied from the Buscema brothers style. And why not borrow from the best? I love his work in issue 383. Additionally, Defalco and Frenz did not want to work on Thor initially, they wanted to work on Daredevil but was given Thor instead. Great video Mike.

I also stopped right after Simonson ended. I think I bought the first issue, and remember just missing Simonson's vibe, and used that as an excuse to stop. Now you have me curious. I just may dip my toe in. 🙂

Why would Thor go to war with his panties on? Were they an Asgard?

Is it me, or did Ron Frenz intentionally make the Gaelic God Caber resemble Conan of Cimmeria?
