- Follow along as I share my experience, alterations, and tips for McCalls 7974. I made View C for the skirt and View A for the sleeves. Instead of using the pattern directions for the sleeve cutout, I drafted a facing - details in the video!

Ok,I've just found you and have been binge watching. I love it that when you tweak a pattern its never a shortcut or an attack of laziness, never "I dont think anyone will notice so I'll skip some steps" Your tweaks always result in a better garment. You improve the fit, you make better use og the materials, you enclose seams to make the garment last. You are the arch enemy of fast fashion and sleazy workmanship. ❤❤❤
Thank you so much for your kind words ❤️
I have seen a number of you tubers making this dress, and your has got to be the best explaining the pattern construction. I’ve had my eye on this pattern for a couple of years, but always thought it to be too low on the bodice, AND never saw it as being for a beginner. After listening to your tips, seeing how the dress fit on you perfectly I hope to buy it this week at JoAnn’s since they will be on sale. Now I need to look for a video on how you altered the bodice.
Your dress looks great. Looking at the design, I can't imagine anyone would actually think this is an easy project.
Thanks! It felt one bias loop and covered button away from a Vogue pattern 🥴
I've been sewing for a couple of years and this was definitely not a beginner pattern. After reading the reviews, I already expected to make a couple of muslins, but in total I had to toile the bodice 5 times to nail the fit.
Also, as mentioned in the video, the instructions are sparse at times, but then very detailed in other steps. It's very inconsistent and not a good way of writing instructions. If McCall's gives this a beginner rating, they should do more hand holding.
Thanks for your video. I love your neckline, and the facing on the keyhole is fabulous. I have this pattern and the more reviews I see, the more i think i need a bit more practice (especially fitting) before I tackle this. 😀
Thank you! This pattern is a bit tricky but the end result is timeless - go for it!
Beautiful! Thank you for all the construction details you provided. They are most useful.
“I made the dress out of…” this extremely adorable kitty cat
Thanks for breaking this dress and the process down!
Eta it looks soooo adorable on you!
Thank you 😊
Thanks for the info. I plan on making this dress. You did a good job.
Thank you! 😊 Good luck on your dress!
This was a great, very detailed and helpful review!
Thank you, glad it was helpful!
Fantastic video ☺️🧡
Thank you!
So thorough, and the dress and fabric are extremely pretty and fun to look at. Completely agree that the dress is MUCH more useful with a raised neckline, and that the seam under the bust needs to be placed correctly under the bust, not on it.
Thank you!
I have this pattern! I like the mod on the keyhole feature. The dress looks great. Nice review, thank you!
Thanks!
I am planning to make this dress out of a polka dot print. Your video was so informative, especially the key hole facing idea❤.(I could tell you were super pleased with yourself with your idea😊). Your dress is so super neat, well done! Cant wait to tacle my project.
Thank you so much 😊 The polka dot print sounds cute!
Could you maybe make a video on how you changed the v neck? I did not quite understand how you did it. I myself am a beginner/amateur sewist and struggle with the fitting of the bust. I like deep v necks but this pattern is way too deep.
I might make a short video for that next week! Thanks for the idea
Yes please to a video re heightening the v neckline, and if possible an idiots guide to full bust adjustments
TIA
Love this dress! Good job
Thank you! 😊
Total beginner here…I found a few sew alongs but I might still hold off on this dress. I love it so much but I don’t know if I’m ready
You can do it! Maybe start with projects that have similar features, like a gathered skirt, a gathered skirt with a front button placket, a dress with a midriff.
where did you learn to sew??? The keyhole/facing is genius
Thank you! I've been teaching myself - learning and failing, lots of experimenting, reading books and watching videos - for about 15 years.
What a lovely dress! When you lined the top half of the bodice, did you sew that lining to the interfaced midriff piece first (treating the linings of the top and midriff pieces as one unit)? Or had you already sewn the interfaced midriff piece down? In which case I assume you handstitched the top half lining to the interfaced midriff piece...? I'm trying to decide which one would give a better finished look... I like the idea of the top half piece being "anchored" to the midriff, rather than free-floating... Which is what it looks like in your photos! Thanks!
Thank you! I think I sewed the upper bust lining to the interfaced facing, and then sewed all that to the interfaced midriff, and then attached that to the outer bodice. The seam allowances of the lining/facing combo were serged together with seam allowance of the bodice at the side seam. I think I have more photos of this on my Instagram if you scroll back. Everything certainly was anchored down, no floppy facings 😊
@@Pour_La_Victoire Thanks for the reply! Your finish work is fantastic by the way! I hope to one day get to your level 😍
