Looks great! If you use 1/4 inch tape on the joints you can paint first and then remove the tape so you can still glue the joints. Using wood biscuits are an option too is you have the tools.
You can indeed paint before assembly. 1:54 However, to do this, it is essential to carefully plan and mark your joints and then apply masking tape carefully to the areas that glue will be applied to. It is often necessary to use a sharp utility knife and straight edge or some similar instrument to trim the masking tape to only cover the areas where glue will be applied. I do this frequently in cabinetry in order to reduce the time needed to finish the cabinet interior. Obviously, you also get a much better finish for all surfaces when you can pre-finish the pieces lying flat. Great video! Keep it up.
This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection ruclips.net/user/postUgkxkNYRBJuiJ6EwD-tQSAlxg0eFKsnR2cgz I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seem to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.
Great video. This project is where a Lamello Zeta P2 and Clamex P connectors would have come in very handy. Or a Festool Domino and cutting your holes for the dominos or Lamello Clamex P connectors after the paint dried. I was able to borrow those tools from a friend who owns a cabinet shop. He also had tools to pre drill the holes for the euro hinge cup and screws in one shot as we put doors on our closet system (although much smaller than yours). Through my cabinet maker friend I was able to get mdf that already had melamine on it so we didn’t have to paint it. More expensive but I saved time and didn’t have the space to paint and stack the panels. It’s to bad that no one rents either a Lamello Zeta P2 or a Festool Domino machine. Your closet system turned out very nice. Ron
Hey, came out very beautiful, big and modular. Looks amazing. Great project. and it's always very good when whole family has made something, even small part. Thans for awesome video. Good job.
This has been on my (and my wife's) list for a while and I've been waiting for a good DIY solution. I will have to modify a few things but this might be my winter project now that yard work is coming to a close. As always, enjoyed your video and following your progress on Instagram.
Hey there, you use to have a list of different plans for all the closet configurations. Those seem to be not linked to Ryobi anymore. How could one get access to those?
I know I am a bit late to this, bit I love the way your closet looks. But your plan is not found on Ryobi anymore, is there any other way to get them? Thanks in advance.
How is the closet holding up? I've been looking for alternatives to plywood for a closet system but I've been afraid of using mdf out of fear it'll break down
Man.. screw painting like that.. Lowe's has a spray gun that'll spray latex paint directly from the can.. it's over in the air compressor/tool area. Not the paint section. It's pretty badass.. puts on a really nice finish once you get the settings right.. just remember to strain the paint so it doesn't clog..
I just finished a couple of double hanging closets and they turned out great! Working on closet dresser section now. I may be missing it, but did you mention the length of the drawer rails you are using? Are they 20" or 22" or what? Great plans, look forward to seeing what's next!
@@rogueengineer I saw in another comment you recommended Blum drawer slides but they only come in 18 and 21" variants. Which one would you go with? Looking at your plans it seems that there should be enough room in the box for a 21" slide. Thanks for the great content Jamison!
Great job, wish you showed how you built the draws and attached the fronts? Did you just glue them together? Also, you used Kilz primer, what paint did you use? Thanks!!
Thanks, I actually had a local drawer manufacturer make them because I was strapped for time and they built them for $30/ea which is worth it in my opinion. If you want to see my tutorial on how to make a simple drawer you can find that here: ruclips.net/video/zo5mUBmguwk/видео.html (full plans: rogueengineer.com/how-to-build-a-drawer-box/) I used my latex trim paint because we had a bunch left over.
What's the best way to handle a wall that bulges in certain spots? I have a spot that bulges in middle which prevents me from easily matching the other section at top and bottom?
I printed out your PDF Plans, those are really nice and helpful!! Is there a software program to create them in? If not, you've put a ton of work into your plans, they look amazing!! Thanks for your time and help!!
Your link says full plans are available on the Ryobi site, but there's nothing in the plans about the drawers. Will you be adding the drawers to the plans at a later date?
I show the drawer assembly in the dresser plans but don’t go into crazy detail. However I do refer to my drawer box tutorial, you can check that out here: rogueengineer.com/how-to-build-a-drawer-box/
Thanks! Honestly I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. I do still need to add some trim to the top and drawer pulls. Maybe nicer drawers fronts would have been a good upgrade.
BigJonHose it’s heavy and pretty finicky when assembling with screws but it paints up really nicely. Once it gets secured to the wall studs and to one another it is solid. It’s just getting it in position after assembly can be tricky
Good question, we primed the edge first, then sanded smooth and reapplied the primer as needed before applying 2 coats of paint (sanding in between coats as necessary.
@@rogueengineer Thanks! Any particular type? Last time I used a water based kilz and it just seemed to keep soaking it up and not making a difference. Was going to try a shellac one next time.
@@SublimeSimplicity I used KILZ premium and it worked pretty good but I've also heard of people using a thin layer of wood glue or even drywall compound on the edges.
@@rogueengineer I also use semi-gloss on a lot of my projects, but I get a tackiness after spraying a project. Even after allowing the first coat to dry for at least 24 hours. Any tips?
If you already have a pocket hole jig would you use that instead of drilling and screwing the panels together. I would assume if they are all hidden between the sections you wouldn't see them and might make it a quicker process. I plan to start on this after my Thanksgiving and am trying to get my brain tracking on how I am going to do it. Everything but assembly in the basement then assemble on the 2nd floor. Lots of stairs to carry.
We painted ours in the basement as well so it was a lot of carrying for us as well. Just go one section at a time and it’s not bad. As for pocket holes. I would advise against with MDF. If you’re using plywood then by all means. However pocket holes are normally for when a face screw might be seen. This isn’t the case for these units so drilling the pocket hole might just be an unnecessary extra step.

The base height should be 1/2” higher than your baseboard. Carpet shouldn’t effect that.
