What a mad and wonderful idea to arrange it 'for band' but with the organ still included. "Only in Russia!" A fantastic arrangement, as required, for this very special piece.

Despite the poor organist’s attack of butterfingers, this is for me the best, most moving, most powerful arrangement and performance of this I’ve ever heard. There is something mesmerising about the conductor: he’s just not kidding, basically, and you can see him channelling, pumping the sound out of the air. The band, who are superb, are putty in his hands. The absence of top strings brings the top brass right to the front of the sound, and makes it terrifying and heartbreaking. Magisterial.

I feel like she messed up due to the fact that that was the part where she is the only one playing, so someone might tense up and get nervous. Still tho, the whole performance was insanely beautiful, some of the best I've ever heard

To think that I was expecting something kinda ridiculous... a MILITARY band playing one of Bach's best works*? No way! Well, I had to eat my words. It's one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard. I was driven to tears. This would almost make me believe in God. Absolutely wonderful.

Bach wrote the Passacaglia at the age of 22 years after his visit of Buxtehude in Luebeck.
It is inspired by the Passacaglia in d minor by Buxtehude.

When Bach composed BWV 582, the instrumentation for cover performances varied from salon to salon amongst the German nobility, and from congregation to congregation in Church circles. This vid is an extrapolation to concert-band scale from an arrangement for woodwinds, strings and cembalo continuo typical of a baronial court.

that's the normal way of reading an 18th Century composition. the tempo is constant throughout - until the last note before the final chord.
this is a wonderful reading of a masterpiece that I've been intimate with (as a keyboard player) for more than 40 years.

This is the question of "the development of music with instruments."
Many composers tried to introduce new or latest instruments for their works.
Mozart Fg. Beethoven Trb. Ravel Sax and so forth.
Do you think Bach dared to exclude the electric guitar if would be there ?

Manuel Alba Rubio, es exactamente, con el añadido del órgano, la transcripción para orquesta que realizó Ottorinno Respighi (se cuenta que en apenas 9 días). This is the most convincing orchestral transcription of any of Bach's organ works I've listened to. The other ones (including Respighi's and Mitropoulos') have something artificial they don't really seem to be compatible with the nature of those pieces. This is not surprising. The original versions were written for organ which, after all, is a wind instrument so a military band is more appropriate.

Presented by a military defense band with minimalistic use of the organ? Now I’ve heard everything?! No matter! Bach can handle it! Bach can handle anything and even Stokowski would applaud this presentation! Will have to make a disclaimer however that this band is not a marching band! The cellos couldn’t handle that task!!! Lol. Thank you for this interpretation! Wonderfully played!!!
