I am one of the singers on here! It was an amazing day, a spine tingling performance. The sound quality doesn't do it justice. It was lovely to see myself and my husband on it and by the way, I'm an atheist and agree the pure beauty of music can move your 'soul' or want of a better word. Thank you for posting this wonderful experience.
If you ever have one of those days where you think humanity is complete shite, just look at the sweetness of the faces of people who come together to sing a bit of Thomas Tallis.
So if 700 human voices can sound so heavenly, can you imagine a celestial choir of angels up in the heavens. Can't get enough of this performance, bravo to each and everyone that participated.
There aren't enough superlatives in the English language to adequately do justice to this rendition. As a church chorister I've always held the view that the choral tradition in the U.K, and England in particular, is without equal anywhere in the World. This performance is, I believe, more than adequate testimony in support of my view. Sincere congratulations to all those involved in bringing this performance to fruition - especially Mr Lawrence. Thank you all.
I would have loved to have been sitting in the middle of that room surrounded by the sound of all of those voices. Thank you for sharing this, it was really quite wonderful.
I had the privelige to sing this piece at the Malvern festival about 20 years ago with other semi-professional and professional singers and it was very difficult to get it together. how you do it with 700 singers is quite amazing.
The genius of Tallis is something I will never understand. How can one person know exactly what notes and words to create, that literally sends "Gansehaut" (goosebumps) to anyone who hears his music?
I'm not generally a fan of this sort of thing (massive forces in early music) but there is a sense of occasion, a unity of purpose and people coming from all over the country to perform Tallis' masterpiece - well, I was overwhelmed by the beauty and how music can create a community and bring out the best in us all. Sublime performance.
This is without doubt, the most exciting rendition of Spem in Alium that I have ever heard. The sight of the mixed choir is thrilling. The intonation is fabulous and the piece's impact shattering.
I watched Harry Christopher's version of this with about 140 voices, which was wonderful, but a little bit of a struggle in places. How on earth David Lawrence was able to do this with 700 voices is beyond me. For me, this is the most beautiful piece of music ever written by the genius Thomas Tallis. Simply stunning.
Wow, they start to really pull off the call-and-response sound about 5:00 in. Impressive for ONE day of rehearsal on such a complex piece of polyphony.
"There are two kinds of geniuses, the “ordinary” and the “magicians.” An ordinary genius is a fellow that you and I would be just as good as, if we were only many times better. There is no mystery as to how his mind works. Once we understand what they have done, we feel certain that we, too, could have done it. It is different with the magicians....... Even after we understand what they have done, the process by which they have done it is completely dark." Such a magician was Tallis - this is music of its time, for all time.
La voix céleste s'exprime ici. Truly glorious. Hard not to hear the voices of angels. Posted this on Facebook and sent to my choir. And no, no standing ovation for what is really a religious work and performance. Inappropriate even in the U.S. as well as the U.K. for an Anglican/Episcopalian work.
the dedication alone ia a testament to what the human voice is capable of and even though I am a believer , i think even if i wasn't it would still astound me.
+David Lawrence Is ianatisd1 truly your former music instructor? (A few lines above this) Course I've likely been trolled.... if so, welcome to the area beyond your bridge, sir!
Goodness, were you there?! Yes it was - we did two passes, and the broadcast was the second one. I think we had to re-do the end but for technical reasons. Amazingly both recordings held pitch so we could edit if we wanted to, but it wasn't necessary. That was more than 10 years ago now - yikes!
Lucky you to be part of such an experience, The beauty of the music just takes me away to another place. I fine more spirituality in music than in a lot of churches, if you know what I mean, Congratulations to all those involved.
I have goosebumps. I wonder if Thomas Tallis knew what he created and what he would say if he saw this and all the other videos. It is truly a MASTERPIECE.
I'm speechless, and weeping like a baby. On my iPod I have the version by the Taverner Choir (40 voices) but this is just on another level entirely. I'm still getting goosebumps.
This is a religious piece, religiously inspired, delivering a religious message - that's what it has to do with it. And for those of a religious variety, it is religiously inspiring. That shouldn't stop you enjoying it in any way whatsoever.
It's a very different type of performance and a wonderful feat. I'm singing this in a week's time (Choir 6 sop, with 2 voices) with only a day to bring it together, and although an experienced choral singer, I'm terrified!! The complexity and timing are really difficult and if you lose the beat, you're sunk! Congratulations to everyone who sang ... I bet you were on a high for ages ...
There is an internal order to this that makes it so wonderful to listen to. Incredible that this order is not material in nature. Yet more incredible still that people have an entirely materialistic worldview, which cannot explain this order.
I loved this...Having so many people, i feel personally, that it took away from the lovely intimacy...but that is just my own opinion, and this was beautiful.
Even with 700 voices, this was 'not' the best rendition of Spem in Alium that I have ever heard. I almost prefer just having '40 very-trained voices' perform it (just for the sake of tonal clarity and control throughout this beautiful, polyphonic masterpiece). But it was a 'magnificent effort', nonetheless, and certainly worthy of anyone's praise. Congratulations on a great performance...Tallis would be proud!
So many voices and so many beautiful human faces-focused on the performance of the work... They are happy that they can give to others the beauty and goodness-specially those women... And if will performed this work for example 7,000 voices? For example 10/31/2017- to 500 anniversary of the Reformation-in the Vatican Basilica of St. Peter? To show by singing realy Christian community? Lets go...
That would be something wonderful - Spem in Alium for 7000 voices at the Vatican on Reformation Day. But great works do not come without hard work and big cooperation. I'm trying to do something for this project - but every start is difficult...
I am fortunate to have the DVD of the rehearsals and this concert that I got from the production company. The whole event is inspiring, with wonderful singing, and shows what can be done. Everyone clearly enjoyed themselves. Well done to the brilliant David Lawrence. I'd like to know who the singer is at the forefront of the link to this extract from the day. I know she sang Alto 1.
I got my DVD from Iambic Productions of Whiteladies Road, Bristol. The lady I spoke to on the phone was Emma Whittle, a producer on the broadcast. I hope the company is still there. Give them a try.
A truly sublime, magnificent piece of art.... Thomas Tallis was a craftsman. You need to have mastered the laws of vocal counterpoint to a professional level and you need to be very very very careful with the text and the mixture of voices. My God they found 700 people to perform this piece... excellent excellent!!!!
MARAVILHOSO , SUBLIME , AGRADEÇO A DEUS POR TER A OPORTUNIDADE EM MINHA VIDA DE VER E OUVIR ESSA OBRA FANTÁSTICA DE THOMAS TALLIS EXECUTADA POR ESSE CORAL , PARABÉNS MUITO OBRIGADO ( LINCOLN , BRASIL ) .
Thomas Tallis or Tallys as he spelled it, was a self-proclaimed Roman Catholic through all the years of the persecution of Catholics in Anglican England. Well known as such he was so respected by Anglican forces in power that he was never sanctioned, arrested, or even blacklisted from creating and performing his prolific works. He spent most of his eighty years as an esteemed composer and musician in an age as is ours, of change, controversy, division, wars, crimes against humanity simultaneously coupled with acts of courage, mercy, forgiveness, discovery, science, exploration and the perfection of literature and painting. His music quelled the warring hearts bringing with its sublime harmonies a reconciliation of the beast within that quelled the fires of hatred that even now can be felt - experienced in-toto after four and half centuries of the greatest and fastest changes in history yet the effect of these harmonies remain unchanged on the human heart.
While I like the fact that this was done at all, from a musical standpoint I would prefer to listen to a 'Spem' with slightly fewer voices... But I'm sure that everyone of the +700 participants had a great time singing this :-) . Thx for sharing.
I am one of the singers on here! It was an amazing day, a spine tingling performance. The sound quality doesn't do it justice. I cannot thank you enough.

I can agree with this comment.
Andreas, i laughed out loud, when i read your comment, but in a good way. So true!
@@andymcginn3391 Could not agree more!
So if 700 human voices can sound so heavenly, can you imagine a celestial choir of angels up in the heavens. Can't get enough of this performance, bravo to each and everyone that participated.
ordinary people, with inspirational ,aspirational leadership can soar to greatness ! magnificent performance, well done to all
That’s a lovely thing to say, thank you!
Magnifique!😍 Le meilleur de notre Humanité!
Merci!🙏
For many reasons, humanity at its best.
Tallis would have been amazed. This is my favourite piece of music of all, Period. ALWAYS moves me to tears..

There is no better instrument than the human voice, Acapella choral singing is magnificent!

I see such happiness in the faces of the singers. They inspire me.

Got chills throughout the whole performance. An epic peformance.
Magnifique! La plus belle interprétation de masse de la musique intimiste de Thomas Tallis. Tout simplement grandiose!
I don't understand a word they are singing, but I totally get it. Makes a lump in my throat. Thank you so much.
Superb performance by all concerned. Nice to see the young people in both choir and audience. A lifetime of musical pleasure lies before them.
This is without doubt, the most exciting rendition of Spem in Alium that I have ever heard. The sight of the mixed choir is thrilling. The intonation is fabulous and the piece's impact shattering.
3:25 always lifts my soul out of my body.
This always brings a tear to my eye when I hear this. Glorious!

This deserves a rousing and a standing ovation!!
a beautiful experience ! it demonstrates that Brittish people are very good musicians ! Bravo to the conductor and to the singers of course.
And of course an English composer!
Matthew Rix mais oui ! And I had the pleasure to sing it several times when I was singing in a very nice choir between 1993 and 2000.
Absolutely awe inspiring, so moving. Well done to everyone, I can only imagine what it must have sounded like to be there on the day.
Truly Heavenly ❤
beauifull....tears are falling as i type x

There are no words sufficient to describe the beauty of this music.

So glad you are pleased with us and had a great time too. Thanks for your reply to my comment. We didn't want it to finish!!

You're very kind, Rick!

He was indeed!
David Lawrence I see, that's unbelievable.
Thank you for the response, and for directing this beautiful event.
Beautiful. Just amazing 👏 . Thank you
Absolutely hypnotic and soothing. Brilliantly done, sir.
Spwm is my most liked english choral work. Id have loved to gave had the chance to sing ghis with 699 others. What an amazing experience
A brilliant, if boiling hot day (one take as well if I remember right)! Much love to you, David Lawrence

Yep, bass in choir 6! Too long ago now!
My sincere thanks to you both, and to the others who performed. This is a sublime rendition of one of the masterworks of music.
Lucky you to be part of such an experience, The beauty of the music just takes me away to another place. I fine more spirituality in music than in a lot of churches, if you know what I mean, Congratulations to all those involved.
This is wonderful....
Best regards from Brazil
A fantastic day! One that I will always remember, we all enjoyed it then, although the boys squirm to see themselves now!
I have goosebumps. I wonder if Thomas Tallis knew what he created and what he would say if he saw this and all the other videos. It is truly a MASTERPIECE.

fabulous, it had me in tears congratulations.
Incredible. Sent shivers down my spine. Would love to hear 'Spem' live.
This is a religious piece, religiously inspired, delivering a religious message - that's what it has to do with it. And for those of a religious variety, it is religiously inspiring. That shouldn't stop you enjoying it in any way whatsoever.
So enjoyed watching this just now. And really enjoyed David's conducting humour at Songs of Praise recording last night in Brighton.
Sublime, truly sublime.
The word 'transported' springs to mind.
Human beings can do this.

Holy Shit! Literally--this is so beautiful--stuff like this helps me believe that there could be a God.

Such beauty
Soy de Concepción Chile, impresionante, maravilloso, increible!!!!
Stunningly beautiful and soulfully divine!
Exquisite
this deserves a standing ovation
What she meant is that is impossible not to feel God in this piece...this obviusly has divine inspiration!
Sin duda una de las mejores obras corales de la historia!
There is an internal order to this that makes it so wonderful to listen to. Incredible that this order is not material in nature. Yet more incredible still that people have an entirely materialistic worldview, which cannot explain this order.
Is so amazing
I'm an atheist too, but I love this type of music. The harmony sounds beautiful.
This is a wonderful piece of music and thank you for uploading it.
So Beautiful.
Beyond beautiful.
I'm amazed. What dedication!
I searched all of my RUclips channels just to come back and find this masterpiece 😇
I loved this...Having so many people, i feel personally, that it took away from the lovely intimacy...but that is just my own opinion, and this was beautiful.
Absolutely fantastic. Thank you for sharing this!

Fabulous
beautiful!
Amazing!
Having read chapter 25 in book 1 of "50 shades" I searched for this piece, a fantastic piece of music for the purpose! And it's religious, wow lol.
Lovely

i strongly recommend Utopia triumphans from the huelgas ensemble, there you can find the spem in alium
Perfection.
Conheci essa obra quando visitei INHOTIM - pela artista canadense Janet Cardiff. Experiência única, maravilhosa.
I'm about to cry...
I am crying
Beautiful(-:
Great!
This is a whole lot better than it has any right to be :)
I can't sing at all, but I imagine it would be a lot of fun to take part in something like that.
Here we go
