It's the Stadium format seemingly done right -- the 3D games made them osbolete but it's a pretty exciting time before watching gameplay videos of PBR as we never had Pokemon as "real" as they are without it.
One of my favorite Pokémon games, the difficulty was great and having your many Pokémon transferred over to compete in cool tournament styles such as the neon colosseum and waterfall colosseum. PWT from black/white2 was the closest we had to exciting tournament battles since this game.
One of my christmas gifts from my grandparents was battle revolution's guidebook...i didnt even have a wii! but the guide had a full pokedex of 3d models and i loved it
Most of genius sonority’s staff including James turner of course were absorbed into game freak so it’s not that far fetched to ask that. James turner was the art director for these games I wonder why sword and shield feels so different
Different develop team too. Creatures Inc. actually had their hands involved in Pokémon models and animations in SWSH more than ever (you can compare the model and animation directors in the credits!). Genius Sonority just had a better development team!
PBR never hid what it was - a good lookin battle simulator. Back of the box tells you this. It was just for visual battles & it delivered. Can sugarcoat it all you want but it did a much better job w/ animation than main 3D titles we got. If it could be done then it could be done now
@Thedudeacrossthestreet Have you even look into the Sword and Shield games? Compare them to Battle Revolution and the 3DS mainline games then come back.
I liked this game for being the first game in the series to have customizable avatars, long before it became a staple in the main series. And it was also the last game to grace us with free battle, which was a missed mode from the classic Stadium games on the N64. I miss building multiple teams and fighting against them. Battling friends is fun, playing online is cool, but the ability to pit one team of yours against another team of yours (one of them being controlled by a CPU) is a missed feature in the series.
I remember a lot of people had issues with this game back then. Even then, the graphics and visuals were extremely good for its time. I’ve never seen anything like it.
Honestly, I have pretty fond memories of the online for this game. I never cared about the legendary ban because I never used them. But this was basically the first time we had online matchmaking for pokemon battles, and it looked fantastic the entire time. Always picked Sunset Coliseum because the music there absolutely bangs. I remember the arenas leading up to the final being amusing enough to keep trudging through, and the final event against the coliseum master or whatever his name was being outright unfair, but definitely a worthy challenge for the end of the game. Honestly, the biggest thing that annoyed me about this game was the fact that it never got any sort of "platinum patch". Would it have been so hard to put a patch on the platinum cartridge that'd upload all the new platinum forms to the wii's hard drive? Also, the complete lack of a gen5 game wound up making that the only gen with no 3d representative, so that kinda sucked.
These animations are cool for your first playthrough but after that your gonna find yourself mashing the a button trying to make these long ass animations go faster.
You can grind your way through the game with rental passes. You can trade pokemon in Trade Battle, until you have decent ones, but still no legendary. Yet, with this method, it is possible to beat Mysterial set 8. Super satisfying.
As a player of this game and around that age group here's what I think is important to add: the rental teams were the ones you are meant to use for the campaign I remember it was like the perfect difficulty. It was the middle evolutions of the sinnoh starters and luxio staravia and gabite I think
This era of Pokemon was the pinnacle for me. Gen 4 (and playing Pokemon on the DS for the first time) quickly became the most fun I'd had with the story and solo experience, and then I got to mess around with it at school with some friends whenever we had time, usually outdoors during break times. It's also the first gen I tried to play competitively in, and taking those teams I made to Battle Revolution felt amazing. Pearl and Diamond felt incredibly cozy to play in and had so much charm to them, and Battle Revolution really elevated the experience to an epic level. Man, I miss those days.
To be fair the "graphics" were definitely not as good as SwSh (much less polygons and not in HD), but the atmosphere is a lot better with much smoother animation
We need another battle sim just like Pokemon showdown but actually made by the Pokemon company. With a Tournament feature Nintendo's gonna get everyone's money.
I loved PBR. I made my mom buy it for me on the Wii and still own it today. I love the unique battle styles. I still cry trying to beat the gamble Colosseum. Haha I miss the announcer TTvTT
I wish they would “remake” this game for the Switch. Keep it separate from the main series games, with the only thing connecting them are copying your Pokemon over from HOME, SWSH, or LGPE. Utilize some the employees from GS (who are clearly still connected with Game Freak, as they have developed Pokémon Shuffle and Cafe Mix recently) and hire new people (they definitely have the money but refuse to spend it) and put together a team that specifies in creating this same game with sharpened models and animations. Purely battling, no set story line, just online battles with a variety of rule sets. Put all the gimmicks together - for example, individual rule sets that allow you to use Dynamax only, Megas only, or Z-moves only - but never at the same time (Megas will never face Dynamax, etc), that way it’s a bit easier to distinguish what’s going on. Yes it will take time to make 1,000+ models and animations but no one asked for a Pokémon game every year! It probably won’t happen though, because Battle Revolution didn’t do well in sales, so they won’t want to repeat a similar game, but I think a lot of the fans are upset enough with the current games’ animations that this could work.
as much as do like a new universal battle sim on the switch but at the same i don't see any reason why it needs to exist other than TPC to file a ceast and desist to showdown.
Why would pkmn not capitalize off a game like that. Considering from this point not all pokemon are going to be in the games this is more time to do this than ever. There's no reason for it to not exist
@@4everzard Not Showdown fans. There is no balancing and a huge lack of features if you trust Nintendo. Not to mention having completely atrocious net-code because Nintendo lives in the 90's to this day.
I dont see them make another on of these tbf. We've already got pokemon showdown which is basically a battle simulator just like the pokemon colossuem. Unless you want better animations and graphics which is irrelevant when your comparing pokemon colossuem to a website made by a unoffical pokemon format
Honestly. They should just make a game like this that can use any of your pokemon from home. Then we would get a competitive experiance with all pokemon and people can stop complaining abou the national dex.
This was my favorite Pokemon game lol I spend hours on watching battles back then, this concept is so fun although it didn't age all too well imo. And yes the animations were so damn expressive and beautiful, that's probably the reason why it was so fun and never got boring (at least to me).
I always played with Rental Passes on one file to get all the character stuff, and I'll eventually transfer my stuff from SoulSilver to the file so that eventually I'll have *the ultimate Battle Revolution competitive setup.* Also Neon Colosseum is trash.
I just want to say thank you so much for making this video! I remember playing this game all the time as a kid and a year after I first got it I realized I could put my Platinum team on it. Your analysis was well organized and brought up the negatives and positives of the game. These games got a lot of hate but honestly they made me a much better Pokémon trainer and grew my love for 3D animation
what do you mean they changed the pronunciation of Arceus to Ar-key-us? the japanese name for Arceus is アルセウス which is pronounced Ar-see-us in japanese
I mostly just played this for 1. The absolute 🔥 soundtrack 2. Gen 4 battles on the big screen 3. Transferring items to my games like several Brick Break TMs
The thing is people like me that didnt have a way to port pokemon, play the game with only rental passes, unlocking new rental passes and combining the pokemon from all the rentals was really fun, and the battles were a better challenge because your pokemon were not op. Play this game with only rental passes and its a MASTERPIECE.
"once the 3D effects wear off you're really stuck with a bare bones $60 game" people play Battle Revolution for the battles like Battle Frontier which everyone keeps asking for them to bring back. the only way you would think that is if you're just playing for story. "I wish Master rank was automatically unlocked" you probably didn't know this but once you beat a stadium you've already beat it gets harder each stadium goes up to rank 8. Rank 5 is when you can start using your in-game team because they're too strong for rental Pokemon. Post game is basically Rank 8 be harder. "In game team The only viable way to play this game" I beat this whole game with Nate's team without the other rental passes as a kid. It's only unviable when you enter Rank 5-8 battles and post game. "They didn't record that many voice lines" you really expect them to do multiple voice lines for same move? do you know how many moves there are in Pokemon lol I'm just surprised they did voice lines for every move in general
9:50 If PBR came out alongside Sword and Shield, I would be inclined to agree. But remember, focused on one thing or not, PBR came out over 10 years before Sword and Shield. TPC could’ve easily taken cues from PBR (and by extension, Genius Sonority), since the Switch, contrary to what defenders would have you believe, can have good quality animations in addition to having an adventure aspect in the game. Heck, Colosseum and XD had this exact combination, and they came out way earlier than PBR did.
I remember playing this game on the wii when I was little all the time against my cousin and even if it isn't a good game or great game It will still always be one of my favorites. ... :)
Disagree, there was plenty of unique voicelines for each pokemon move (namely the ones with base power of 95-150), and it only activated if it was a one-shot kill or he does it as a troll “not very effective” attack Ex. Soaked By Surf! Swamped- by Hydro Pump! DELUGED by Hydro Cannon
Still wishing for stadium 3 Just imagine New pokemon snap graphics Gym leader castle for ALL regions, New minigames and the regular cups and maybe the world championship like in the new anime
I believe that the main Pokemon games should have some much needed healthy competition. Right now they are stagnant because they know that they have a monopoly. Third party companies can do so much better, but they ignore it because they can.
I feel like Battle Revolution is at its best if you play it along side a gen 4 save file. The battles are really engaging if you start off with a team of ~level 20s and slowly update them overtime
Battle revolution will always be my favourite pokemon console game hands down. First game I played where I could play a character the same colour as me, and have it be "me"
At 8:10 it's mentioned that this game is $60. Weren't wii games $50 and Nintendo made the $60 jump with the wiiU? I'm not here to fact check, it's just more fuel for the swsh comparison tbh
I have INCREDIBLY fond memories of this game and was SO excited to get it for Christmas the year it came out. I just picked up this game recently and it does have a lot of flaws, but I do love it still for all its good qualities. I sorely miss the online battles now even though the system was pretty broken lol, but I just keep coming back to this game every once in a while... I really have a soft spot for it
I kind of would like to replay this game with a team of transferred Pokémon. But if what you're saying is true and all of the early battles are boring and repetitive, then the experience may not be worth it. But like a lot of commenters said, the music and animation are great. I like the customization too, even if there are WAY fewer clothing options than in Sword and Shield. I just appreciate that you can choose an older looking player character. That Muscle Man model looks so cool!
I will always love this game, the graphics, the music, the gimmicks, just a ton of nostalgia for me. Plus yes grinding through the beginning sucks, but once you get past that, the battles get genuinely difficult and you face just random regular trainers who use box art legendaries. It’s genuinely an awesome experience because all of the teams in the Rank 8 battles (the highest rank) are competitively built, fully utilizing gimmicks like toxic stall and weather to the best of their ability and using incredibly strong Pokémon. Again, grinding through the starting portion sucks, but that has always been a problem for Pokémon. The individual gimmicks of the colosseum and seeing opposing trainers wield legendaries like it’s some regular thing will always make me happy
I still play this game occasionally with the heartfelt file that I have saved on it. The announcer and stadiums are great! Also the little cup stadium is probably my favorite

It better have swsh graphics. Gen 9 would be the worst looking game since battle revolution if it had battle revolution graphics.
No, swsh graphics are miles better than battle revolution

Good joke. Just like the N64 trees.
One of my favorite Pokémon games, the difficulty was great and having your many Pokémon transferred over to compete in cool tournament styles such as the neon colosseum and waterfall colosseum. PWT from black/white2 was the closest we had to exciting tournament battles since this game.
I spent so much time in this game, I'm so glad to see someone covering it even now in 2020!!
One of my christmas gifts from my grandparents was battle revolution's guidebook...i didnt even have a wii! but the guide had a full pokedex of 3d models and i loved it
Ngl. I have a soft spot for this game. But yeah only battling gets old fast. Soundtrack is great though
Most of genius sonority’s staff including James turner of course were absorbed into game freak so it’s not that far fetched to ask that. James turner was the art director for these games I wonder why sword and shield feels so different
Because they rushed it to meet the deadlines and because fans want a new game every year
Different develop team too.
If it could be done then it could be done now
It’s sad that In 2007 this game looked way better than gen8 in 2019-2020
It doesn't look better
Thedudeacrossthestreet 🤨 it does
@Thedudeacrossthestreet Have you even look into the Sword and Shield games? Compare them to Battle Revolution and the 3DS mainline games then come back.
ElectroBlastLuigi SWSH is easily the best looking Pokemon gane ever made.
Timothy Dragneel it doesn't. Battle revolution has the most revolting animations I've ever seen
I liked a lot this game. The music, all the animated pokemon with PERSONALITY that we miss these days and the Voice
What are Platinum forms? And they started doing sequels with gen v so that might be why and no Pokemon game was made on wii u I don't think
The music, the animations, the pokémon actual sizes, all things SW/SH wished they had.
SWSH is much better in every way
These animations are cool for your first playthrough but after that your gonna find yourself mashing the a button trying to make these long ass animations go faster.
@@deante6721
Sounds more like a you problem, not a problem with the game.
@@antonioiniguez1615 no.
EspurrsEyes42 no the animations are a problem with the game.
One day we'll get our Pokemon: Breath of the Wilds game. One day.
No thanks
Nope if we keep buying their mediocre games.
we'll get that on mobile with micro transactions
Gen 9 NEEDS to be a big leap. (altho sadly people will dick ride it anyways)
Hahahhahahaahahhahahahhha yeah not gonna happen for a LONG time lol
This era of Pokemon was the pinnacle for me. Gen 4 (and playing Pokemon on the DS for the first time) quickly became the most fun I'd had with the story and solo experience, and then I got to mess around with it at school with some friends whenever we had time, usually outdoors during break times. It's also the first gen I tried to play competitively in, and taking those teams I made to Battle Revolution felt amazing. Pearl and Diamond felt incredibly cozy to play in and had so much charm to them, and Battle Revolution really elevated the experience to an epic level. Man, I miss those days.
This game was an actual challenge unlike recent games, I come back to this game to give my team a challenge quite often
Hands down better grafics than sword and shield lmao
To be fair the "graphics" were definitely not as good as SwSh (much less polygons and not in HD), but the atmosphere is a lot better with much smoother animation
@@user-uv5ld3cx5t I love honchkrow's death animation in this game, maybe the best pokemon animation of all time
This game makes me actually use strategy especially after I beat it. Something I haven't done in main series in a long time
I loved this game as a kid. I remember standing in front of the tv screen and shouting the attacks...till my mom told me to shut up lol!!
Ahhh, Battle Revolution. My son and I still bust this open from time to time
Too bad this game never got a sequel in the 2010's for the Gen 5 games, like Black, White, Black 2 & White 2.
Genius Sonority should make every Pokemon game lol
We need another battle sim just like Pokemon showdown but actually made by the Pokemon company. With a Tournament feature Nintendo's gonna get everyone's money.
You make such quality content I always click your videos so fast
appreciate it my friend!
I loved PBR. I made my mom buy it for me on the Wii and still own it today. I love the unique battle styles. I still cry trying to beat the gamble Colosseum. Haha I miss the announcer TTvTT
Just found this channel. You know, I couldn’t agree with you more and I’m glad someone finally acknowledged Battle Revolution.
I'm honestly still hoping they make another game like this.
as much as do like a new universal battle sim on the switch
but at the same i don't see any reason why it needs to exist other than TPC to file a ceast and desist to showdown.
I wish lol kinda tired of all singles battles being done on showdown
Awesome music and seeing Pokémon in that form was absolutely mesmerizing. Plus the master class battles are still difficult for me
This was my favorite Pokemon game lol
I spend hours on watching battles back then, this concept is so fun although it didn't age all too well imo.
And yes the animations were so damn expressive and beautiful, that's probably the reason why it was so fun and never got boring (at least to me).
I used to play this game online so much. I remember the lengthy communication times too, oh those were the days :D
I loved the 2008 VGC on battle Revolution
I always played with Rental Passes on one file to get all the character stuff, and I'll eventually transfer my stuff from SoulSilver to the file so that eventually I'll have *the ultimate Battle Revolution competitive setup.*
Also Neon Colosseum is trash.
I agree. I’d get screwed with my own Pokémon
Yep. Thats why i just made a pass of unown for it.
Ah I remember playing it every day back in 2009 when I was 20. Brings me so many memories.
Bro this game was the best. I get mesmerized by the map, action & art of the Pokémon, music and etc...
I still play this game after a run of Heart Gold as end game content
I just want to say thank you so much for making this video! I remember playing this game all the time as a kid and a year after I first got it I realized I could put my Platinum team on it. Your analysis was well organized and brought up the negatives and positives of the game. These games got a lot of hate but honestly they made me a much better Pokémon trainer and grew my love for 3D animation
I absolutely loved this game as a kid. I still have and play it to this day
what do you mean they changed the pronunciation of Arceus to Ar-key-us? the japanese name for Arceus is アルセウス which is pronounced Ar-see-us in japanese
It's basically Pokémon Stadium 3 but without mini games and rental Pokémon, right?
I mostly just played this for
1. The absolute 🔥 soundtrack
2. Gen 4 battles on the big screen
The problem is there needs to be more of a middle ground with rental Pokemon being too weak or your own Pokémon making it too easy
“EARTHQUAKE TEARS OPEN THE GROUND!” Was my personal favorite
pokemon NEEDS to revisit this concept this game had such good potential
I like how his game more than most modern Pokémon games
Such an overlooked game. Still has the best models in the series. I still really enjoy it, though yes mainly for the models, music and narrator
Used to play this before my mom sold our wii. This game was so good!!
IM GONNA CRY FROM THE NOSTALGIA COZ I MISS THIS SO MUCH
I loved the announcer for this game lol. The music was also top notch.
Boy this game takes me back, and it still looks great
I remember playing this game on the wii when I was little all the time against my cousin and even if it isn't a good game or great game It will still always be one of my favorites. ... :)
Disagree, there was plenty of unique voicelines for each pokemon move (namely the ones with base power of 95-150), and it only activated if it was a one-shot kill or he does it as a troll “not very effective” attack
Ex.
Soaked By Surf!
Swamped- by Hydro Pump!
DELUGED by Hydro Cannon
Hear me out; A new Battle Revolution for Switch with the National Dex from Gen 1 to 9. I'd kill for that!
Still wishing for stadium 3
Just imagine
New pokemon snap graphics
Gym leader castle for ALL regions, New minigames and the regular cups and maybe the world championship like in the new anime
this game looks MILES better then sword and shield, graphics wise
Facts
I’m not entirely sure but I think it’s about the same price if you think about inflation
Imagine Pokémon’s Gen 10…. With a story, Final Fantasy Level… with these graphics, actual voice acting, music and animations… an instant hit….
I didn't appreciate this game when it came out...
I still have the Poketopia Pikachu that knows Surf (now evolved into Raichu)
My first game was DP. I would constantly get Battle Revolution from the library just to play battles in 3D online
Also the little cup stadium is probably my favorite
i wish this game would come back.
PALWORLD DEVS : i got you fam
