It's funny that at that point in his career he didn't have a second Lucille all strung up and ready to go on a stand. Gibson at that time was committed to B.B. and should have provided more than one Lucille to him. Gibson made a fortune off of him. They still sell semi-hollows with his name on him. I"m guessing Gibson just took him for granted.
This was one incredible afternoon of music. I was working backstage at this show, and when they introduced him, they said it was BB King's 60th birthday (it was actually a couple of days before). But the stadium was full of college kids and country fans, and I'd imagine that not that many people knew who he was. He got kind of a lukewarm reception, and then he got out on the lip of the stage, and just sold it. Unbelievable how the crowd turned around-never seen anything like it. Place went nuts.
@@pritchettedeaton Not only that, but to keep things moving, they were using the Budweiser rotating stage that allowed them to set up the next band while the current act was playing its set. Each band had been allotted a strict 15 minute time limit that day, and when BB hit about the 18 minute mark, the floor manager with the headset from The Nashville Network (who was carrying the daytime feed) came out of the truck and got in BB’s road manager’s face and was screaming at him to get them to wrap it up. At this point, the crowd in Memorial Stadium was on fire, the place was rocking like I’d never seen, and I heard the road manager yell back, “…what do you want me to do, get the hook out and pull him off stage? Mr King will stop playing when he’s good and god damned ready!” And he ended up going just under a half hour. It was truly something else.
@@markv.5962 He stops playing once he's actually restringing it, but you can see before he stops to replace the string that he just quickly moved to the B string and kept playing while his tech was getting the replacement string.

Danny Mundy in my opinion, B.B. King was the greatest blues singer of all, but for guitarist I'd say Stevie Ray Vaughan. But that's just my personal preference
Actually, I don't think anybody really undermines the vocal powerhouse this man was. If he'd just sang, without the guitar playing, he'd be yet a blues god. For sure. 👍👍👍
"I gave you SEVEN children ... and now you wanna give em back." For some reason women laugh the hardest at that line. Only BB King could pull that off.
My paternal grandfather gave my gm 12 and the maternal 15, but the very first ones were twins and both died within months. I think people didn't have much to do back in the 60's
And does it all while playing and singing like BB King. Such an impossible task for any human. Seriously, nobody ever thought about a spare, emergency guitar? 😁😁😁
I was close enough to see the string break, BB restring and tune the guitar. Guessing 90/95% in attendance had no clue. That was a long, cold, wet, INCREDIBLY FANTASTIC SHOW!
he didnt tune it at all just put it on and stretched it. in fact he didnt play it at all after it broke. im sure he switched guitars after that song and the tech retuned it
Many guitarists change their guitars when the strings break, but the god-given talent continues to play even if the second string breaks, and even replaces the strings in the middle of the vocal. I will end up. He is also a god-chosen talent.
BB was going for the gold on this solo. Lucille was crying which is good, but BB was pushing her to the limit. Notice how everyone on stage is in a trance... this is still his greatest solo. R.I.P BB
It's amazing how B.B. can play 2-3 notes in a 10 second span and accomplish more than a fast guitar player playing a gazillion notes in the same amount of time. Albert King and Albert Collins, the same, play a few notes at the right time, right feel, right energy, and that's it. Unreal. Albert Collins doesn't even change positions on the neck and gets it done better than most.
DANxTHExGUITARxMAN Yup! I love the string change but am a little baffled at how he didn't play for the rest of the song. I wonder why he just didn't opt for the guitar change. Perhaps just to show off more his legendary skills?
B.B. King was the first concert I ever saw. Omaha,NE. I was 14, It was 1997 and it changed everything that I thought was good in the world. Really... I didn't know what I liked about life until I heard B wail the blues right in front of me. I still carry the laminated ticket stub in my wallet. I never met the guy, but I genuinely feel like I lost a friend.
And through all what he did, fixing his guitar string, adjusting his pants. He never missed a beat. What an accomplished man. He is truly missed. Gone but Not Forgotten.
First time I see a guitar player changing a string while playing a song!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I play guitar and that would be almost impossible to me, even Buddy Guy stops his songs while changing strings! O.o but weeell, we're not talking about a guitar player, we're talking about BBKing!!!!
There's a buddy guy video where he's playing with Ron wood where he breaks a string. Song goes on...he switches guitars after Ronnie offered him his..cool one
Something I've always loved about this recording in particular is the energy that translates through the video. It was late enough into BB King's career that the recording technology used was high enough quality to pick up on the nuances, but not late enough where he lost steam. I wish i had been there to witness this concert in person. R.I.P. you absolute legend.
String breaks at almost exactly 2m 52s of the video; while continuing to perform a solo, he signals his guitar tech, who runs right to left thru the frame at 3m 13s (blue cap), identifies correct replacement string, unpacks, unfurls and then hands it over at 3m 40s
The Great ones change broken strings on the fly without stopping the song. This man was truly the King of the Kings (Albert King, Freddy King ) and the King of the Blues. The one true Blues legend. RIP Riley
I saw a video of BB playing this song in a prison. Same vibe, but what was incredible was the fact that his vocals were obviously heard through the PA, but the mic also picked up his ambient voice in the room. Monstrous vocals overriding the PA, the man roared like a lion, like a King. What an amazing talent, and a brilliant entertainer and showman.
Loved BB King since I was a kid. We used to go see him at the Warehouse in New Orleans. Wow, the music was unreal. The man could make a guitar actually talk, cry, laugh out loud and chuckle, and you never saw it coming!!! Awesome!!

It probably takes me about 15 minutes to change (usually a high E), a broken string while in my kitchen with no audience. I remember BB performing this song on Mer Griffin show. Great lyrics. Was fortunate to see him live. Probably at the Philly Spectrum.
Incredible. I first saw BB at a private corporate gig in Ottawa's National Arts Center (What a room. acoustically PERFECT) in 1980. I was 20, and blissfully ignorant. Totally changed my life. Never missed a show, right to the end. Thanks, Blues Boy.
