I can empathize, as a British person I know well how hard it is to realize that you were brought up thinking your people were 'the good guys' and then finding out that actually they were oppressors. I had to go through a whole process after being in a much more international environment where I married an Irish man and have Indian, Pakistani and Kenyan friends, and realised that being on the right side in WWII was really a historical blip after centuries of being the bad guys. I also grew up in North London, and had a jewish boyfriend whose best friend was Israeli, and I myself had this idea that kibbutz were really cool. It's sad, but great that you're leading the conversation to explore what Zionism really is. We know that the issue isn't just Netanyahu, and I think all our nations need to start exploring and owning our dark histories if we're ever to be able to move on. Sadly many people don't want to hear... the same with English people when I've tried to raise the issue of feeling shame for the history of the British empire.

Very well said, and fair play for “owning” Britain’s very dark history 👍. I’m not even sure they were 100% the good guys in WW2 ?

Just saw an interview with a woman who was taken hostage after 10/7. Horrid experience obviously. But some things struck me. She called her kibbutz a “slice of heaven” but I couldn’t understand how living next to imprisoned ppl right next door could seem heavenly. Cognitive dissonance? Also she spoke about being kept inside a door and having to knock or ask for “basics.” Made me think of what Gazans live through, being stuck there and having to get rations, even before 10/7. And finally, the ceasefire gave a chance for some hostages to be rescued… but ppl don’t seem to understand that a ceasefire is the only path to rescuing the rest… like after 6 months of bombs/ starvation/ no meds, etc. it will be a miracle if any hostages survive now. If bombing worked to rescue them then the hostages would all be back now.

The Jewish groups including Haganah to Irgun, and the Stern Gang (Lehi) actively used terrorism against the British mandate over Palestine and to create fear among the Arab citizens. John Lois Peeke, an American military expert, also writes that Zionist terrorism was at the core of the idea of Israel. “Jewish terrorism against British and Arabs did contribute heavily to the removal of the British from Palestine, the abandonment of the League of Nations mandate and the creation of a Jewish state of Israel,” he wrote in his book Jewish-Zionist Terrorism and the Establishment of Israel.Zionist terrorist groups attacked with impunity not just military targets but also civilians in the 1940s.

On a tour crossing the Sea of Galilee, I left my group to talk to the tour guide who was talking to the boat pilot about how "they are animals", and "so dirty with no morals". I asked them who and they both looked at me simultaneously and said "Arabs!". They didn't know that I was half Syrian up until that moment. The were pretty quiet on the way back though.
