So I was incorrect at the beginning. It was actually three championships that would have stood in either points system.
    2005 Tony Stewart
    2012 Brad Keselowski
    2017 Martin Truex Jr

There are actually 6 championships that would have stood under either points system between 2004-2018:
      2005 Stewart
      2006 Johnson
      2009 Johnson
      2012 Keselowski
      2013 Johnson
      2017 Truex Jr.

Chris 2 Awesome Under what racing universe?
Jeff Gordon statistically accumulated the most points in the 2014 season.
He also had the most top 10s and best average finish of the 2014 season.
Kyle Busch would have finished somewhere around 14th or 15th in points in 2014.

The amount of racing records Tony holds is still amazing. Being the only driver to win a championship in both NASCAR AND IndyCar, the only driver to win a NASCAR championship under both the old points format and the current Chase playoff format, arguably the greatest rookie season in NASCAR history, the list goes on.

Tony Stewart showed during that season he could win at anytime, anywhere anyplace and got a couple of wins that eluded him and had arguably his best shot at a Daytona 500 win, but nonetheless that 20 car with a new paint scheme for 2005, he drove like a champion and had a positive outlook over the season and climbing a few fences along the way.

FYI...SMOKE! Winner of three Championship Cup Series in NASCAR; Winston Cup in 2002 (Pontiac), Nextel Cup in 2005 (Chevy), and Sprint Cup in 2011 (Ford). NASCAR's Rookie of the Year 1999! Personally, I own three diecast models with SMOKE's signature during his championship run series, call me lucky and blessed! I also own SMOKE's rookie signature diecast model of 1999 when running for The Joe Gibbs Stable, No. 20 of Home Depot in Orange! Again, lucky SOB! Sorry, IS NOT FOR SALE! P.S. Hard-core NASCAR fans from all venues were offering somewhere between $6 to 8Ks USD dollars for SMOKE's rookie diecast model with his signature of which I own one unique classic. That was back in March of 2006 and five years later, SMOKE wins his 3rd Cup! Today, SMOKE's rookie diecast model of 1999 with his own hand-print signature is worth approx. $13 to 15K USD and increasing as a co-owner with Stewart/Haas Stable. Again, I'm a lucky SOB! I also have a No. 14 diecast model with his genuine signature as pilot and owner. Amen.

Glad you did this one man; the day you posted it was rough for me and you helped make my night a ton better, thanks for that.
I was 12 and I got diehard into Nascar that year starting with Daytona. Pulled for Jeff and Mark but I wanted someone else to pull for as they were getting older and in come Smokey. Always hated him after 2002 because he beat Mark and was a bit of a jerk but damn if he didn't win me over during that stretch.
You had Johnson and Biffle winning all the time that year and it was blah that first half. No one liked Jimmie and Biffle was just meh so the fans badly needed someone to pull for and Tony just took off it was amazing to watch. He could do nothing wrong those couple of months. He actually coulda won more but he let a couple slip away. If he hadn't he woulda had an epic streak ala Gant's. Don't know which win was more epic to watch: Daytona for how dominant she was or Indy for how awesome of a win it was for him. Watkins Glen he just dominated like Jeff used to do. Me and my family became fans of him and it was a great rest of that year.
Johnson fell off and Biffle hung in there (still pissed at him for beating Mark in the finale lol,) but Tony was just too strong.
Def his season in time. Wish he had won the 500 there; Jeff really didn't need that win.

Anyone remember the guy who jumped out in front of Tony’s car in that sprint race and got killed? I live about 10 miles from the track where that happened. It’s stilled talked about around here.

    Great video as always...
But Tony Stewart’s 2005 hot streak was not the “Great Summer run in NASCAR history.”
Jeff Gordon’s 1998 summer run is the great in the NASCAR Modern Era.
From race 14 at Michigan to race 33 at Atlanta, Jeff Gordon reeled off 20 consecutive top 10 finishes, including 17 consecutive top 5 finishes and 10 wins in the stretch.
That is truly the most dominant streak in NASCAR’s modern era.
Please do a video on Gordon’s 1998 season.

Definitely a great season. Only Jimmie Johnson was really close to out-performing him.

Yup terrible attitude, not a great role model, but he’s gotten better since he retired. Maybe killing a kid helped humble him?
