ironically, all the drivers Ty mentioned as being stars/celebrities (Gordon, Stewart, and Johnson) are Hoosiers. (Jeff, and Jimmie were born in California, but moved to Indiana at young ages)
Tony was never the most talented driver when he was in USAC, but he was damn sure the most competitive guy out there. He was always willing to make whatever adjustments he needed to win. It was the basis of his versatility. Early in his career, he tended to over drive the car. When he drove the Glen Neibel V6 in Silver Crown, he had to learn to be smooth to take advantage of the characteristics of that car. That unleashed his talent, and the rest is history.
Not so sure I'd agree or disagree. Tony was good enough and hungry enough in any racing discipline. His NASCAR career is a perfect example. Tony Stewart and Jimmie Johnson were the dominant forces of NASCAR from 2002-2010. As far as talent goes, Johnson's was just better suited for a stock car. And to your point about Tony in USAC, he wasn't THE best talent...but he was talented enough to win, and win championships and that's the bane of Tony's career. If you broke his talent down to a letter grade, he is an A- in ANY racing discipline. Tony is the best American race car driver of all time.
