- In episode 91 Newbern and I flew from Georgia to Iowa to purchase a 1998 Ford F800 cab and chassis commercial truck that had been stretched from a four-door crew cab to a six-door behemoth. The truck only had 30,000 miles on the odometer and we believed the mileage figure to be accurate. We also believed the seller who said it was ready for a cross-country road trip, even though the truck had a few suspect attributes.
First off, during the test drive, the heater kept shutting off whenever I put my foot on the floor. Second, the radiator cap was leaking and lastly, the oil level dipstick had a homemade rubber strap holding it in place. None of these were good signs that the Cummins 12-valve diesel engine was completely healthy but after flying all the way to Iowa and falling in love with the six-door cab, we figured we'd take the risk and buy it anyway. After all, the dude said he had performed a "blobby test" and it passed with flying colors. lol
Anyway, the truck ran fine but about 150 miles into the trip the heater stopped blowing cold air and then the temp gauge pegged the needle at the "H" mark. I quickly pulled over and shut off the Cummins. Popping the hood revealed a radiator gushing an mixture oil and coolant from the overflow tube, a surefire sign that the combustion chambers were no longer isolated from the cooling passages of the engine. It was late at night, nobody wanted to tow the behemoth without charging us several thousand dollars to do so, and so we checked into a local motel.
This video picks up the following morning after my friend Jimmy Bullard helped us find a local tow company operator who was so generous that he not only towed the truck to his shop, but he also let us use his tools and fix it ourselves. What a guy!

@@0xsergy Not really free, even ignoring the two tows, given that he probably would have been in a world of hurt from his insurer if something had gone wrong with non-employees working in the shop. Heck, he might still get in trouble with them for having allowed it in the first place. (I'm saying this in a positive manner, to be clear. Gutsy move allowing it.)

Yea the guy went above and beyond by letting him borrow the shop all night long not many people would do that for complete strangers. I applaud him.
Thanks for all the positive comments. We're extremely lucky to have met Troy and his crew. I'm not gonna lie, it was nice knowing people like that still exist. We left him and his crew some merch. We did remove the paper from the head right before we sat it in place. The truck gets 9 mpg. At 70 mph it turns 2200 rpm. Thanks for watching..

This video has SO much good stuff. F-800 , Robert's Towing, and an unbelievable store where NO Smoking means NO SMOKING! I'm 57 years old and like a gambler with a problem , If I lived within 100 miles of that Superstore I would be broke all the time. I didn't know such a thing even existed.
I REALLY hope you have some FSM swag on the way for Robert's Garage and Towing for doing you guys a solid on the new truck!

@@imchris5000 AAA sucks ass. I was out town when my wife wiped out the lower pan in her VW Passat. AAA sent a truck out from a distance of 150 miles. . 7 Fucking hours she sat.
Zues Toots wow I end up using AAA at least once a year usually twice with all the old cars I have and I never had more then the 90 minute they quote. I did call them for a bike but found AAA didn’t tow bikes . Bummer. But in ‘18 they included bikes. HINT you should include a full set of tie down straps on you bike, not ratchets, just straps to put around your frame or handle bar risers. When I had mine put on the roll back they used some bogus “cuffs” that went on the grips. I objected but they wouldn’t take it with any other arrangement. Of course we were on the tallest longest bridge in my state and the mini apes revolved in the risers and the bike came half loose. Then the driver agreed to my plan. Anyway, real off topic but for a little over $60 a year you can’t beat AAA especially when you consider they will tow anyone’s car as long as you are there with your card!!! Talk about saving the day!!!!!
@@XXX-qk2cq Speaking of bikes and AAA... Years ago, I once needed a jump due to being out on a motorcycle that had a (then unknown to me) charging problem. I called AAA sales, as I wasn't a member, and asked about it. They happily signed me up, took my CC info, billed me, and transferred me over to the department that'd actually dispatch someone to me. I remember thinking how great it was there was no waiting period before getting to use it... and then the dispatcher told me they wouldn't handle jumping a bike. I wound up having to call a local tow shop myself which, of course, had no trouble jumping the bike with a portable jumper pack.
Micah Tischler yeah the no bike thing was a total surprise but now my gold AAA card has motorcycle printed right on the front. I don’t think they have any trouble sending a big enough truck for something big. My Ford Excursion blew a hose and they sent a truck the same size as the Roberts one shown. They have it down to a science and they tell you how far away the tow truck is. One guy talked about a 7 hour wait, I think there must be more to that story!

What I am ALWAYS amazed with about Mike Finnegan is the fact that he finds humor in SERIOUS break down issues and just "soldiers on" with the repair/break down issue. I suppose my hand wringing spastic issues are stupid after watching Mike's attitude.

Army mechanic: when you pull off an enormous wheel, remarking how heavy it is, lay it down flat somewhere. A wheel that's laying down can't fall on anyone. Sure it's difficult to stand them back up, but you're in a truck shop with all kinds of lifting equipment. Or, grab a buddy, keep your back straight, use your legs.

I know you're set on the ramp truck thing, but that rig is such an awesome gooseneck hauler, it's almost a shame.
Edit: quit flooring the clutch to shift gears. That's a truck transmission. Float the gears once you're moving and if you HAVE to use the clutch, only push it in halfway. You're gonna burn your clutch brake out.

The medium duty ones don’t normally have a clutch brake. And some are synchronized. This one is old enough I doubt it’s synchronized, but I also doubt it has a clutch brake to worry about.

@@iAMiRex27 It's a real thing yo! :) Mine was an '84 5 ton military 6x6. Blew a tire. Then when I stopped I realized the temperature gauge was pegged. Heater core sprung a leak and dumped all the coolant. When we got that all taken care of and I was driving home the engine dropped a valve. All in the course of less than 10 miles.

Because of 3 years of watching you and fryburger me and my wife (we live in central ohio) drove to newport news,Virginia to pick up a 6 speed manual 97 chevy camaro z/28 30th anniversary that broke the oil pump drive gear the owner tore it apart cleaned everything , replaced drive gear from ticks performance and intake gaskets put it back together then 2 days later drove it 600 miles home through the mountains #becauseracecar #becauseroadkill thanks guys love the content ill be starting my own channel very soon

Spraying Copper Coat on the head and block gets it inside the coolant and oil passages. Only spray both sides of the gasket. Love the episode. Like watching big kids get a new big toy Tonka truck to play with on Christmas.
Great time was had by all. ,!!! I have done few headgaskets in my fifty plus years of turning wrenches and have always installed the headgaskets dry. It will be very interesting to follow this engine's life and see if the copper goop holds. Let's hope so.
The books and the gaskets always say to install dry, so I always do. Never had one spring a leak, even on undecked heads. Not sure if it gains you anything with the modern gaskets.
I’ve had pretty great luck with copper coat on headgaskets and various other flat gaskets.

Such a behemoth. It's what they need in that shop though. You could pull an entire engine and lift it above the forward-opening hood then roll it back and take it all the way to the ground.
