    The PS3 is like a Lamborghini with a 1 gallon tank. 256Mb System RAM (a quarter of Gigabyte) + 256 Mb Video RAM. More or less the specs I had on my PC in 2003. Let's say it's an unbalanced system: the cell unit is powerful, the rest is very limited. This because RAM was quite expensive until 2007. Also, he said wrong. Cell is an 8 core (not 9), but its architecture is not comparable to normal PC processors architecture.

  • @NerdInHisShoe
    @NerdInHisShoe 14 лет назад +1

    @henryhenriquez Cache isn't the same as local store. Cache isn't read/written to by the programmer. Local store is.
    The PPE isn't involved in SPE-initated DMA transfers.
    Resolution and framerate are mostly GPU-bound. But Cell isn't a good choice for a game console, but that doesn't take anything away from its raw processing abilities.

    If memory is a factor or it requires double-precision floating point math then x86 is the way to go. If it can run in parallel with very little or no branching, then GPU is probably the best choice.

    Well we've already gained access to the RSX by compromising the hypervisor. Nowadays you can use the RSX's VRAM as swap space which speeds up the OS. As for homebrew applications take a look at RSXGL, which is a port of OpenGL for the RSX. ;)

  • @NerdInHisShoe
    @NerdInHisShoe 14 лет назад +1

    @henryhenriquez All the PPE needs to do is load the SPE program. Everything else is done by the SPE.
    The PPE is there for general purpose tasks like running the OS, house-keeping, etc.
    PPE and SPE have different instruction sets. They are not instruction set extensions on the PPE which (I think?) you're implying. They are separate processors with their own registers, instruction pointer, memory controllers, and even their own memory.

    At its time, the PS3 was a jump to the future, there were few systems of original PC hardware that actually held 1080p capable video cards.
    Sure you could easily change the hardware but not many started with that hardware. Can your starting PC from 5 years ago play Blu-Ray, hold 100 frames per second without lag, show 1080p and hold 320 gigabytes, and cost less than 800 dollars? Didn't think so.

  • @Toastmaster_5000

    @henryhenriquez
    you seem to fail to realize that ps3 is a gaming console. it doesn't need more than 256mb of ram because nothing is going to use it. also once you get to 6gb, you're actually slowing down your system (assuming you're using single or dual channel). also, you're comparing a vector based cpu to a gpu. they're not alike - they perform different types of equations, which is why they're different architectures and named differently. you didn't even specify how many flops you get

  • @henryhenriquez
    @henryhenriquez 14 лет назад

    @Palmer640 ps3 gpu is clocked at 550MHz, its ram is clocked at 700MHz, and that doesnt compare to modern gpu's.
    it has very very few shaders, most gpu comes with 100 times more

  • @joemann797
    @joemann797 14 лет назад

    @mathhenr They are not cores in the terms of general CPU processing, but they are able to preform calculations essentially to the supercomputer, thus, still making them cores, in some essence, at least.
    If you want to be technical, yes, that's correct.
    PS3 fanboys will come and argue that they are full cores anyway, just because they like to see their system as an 8 core machine, not a 1 core machine.

  • @SolMalus
    @SolMalus 12 лет назад

    1. It does today.
    2. It upscales, and today there is about 100 games that are actually rendered legitimately at 1080p.
    3. It has 320gb now (which I realize isn't a lot but for 250 dollars, that's a steal.)
    4. It was released in 2007, which was 2 years after the Xbox360. (not that we're talking about the Xbox360, just making a point)
    5. I don't really care about that.
    So, the verdict of my statement is that the PCs of today equals the PS3s of today. :) imo.

    @NewLynxS It really depends on the task. Even by todays standards Cell has high throughput for integer and single-precision floating-point operations. Memory is definitely a limiting factor though. If its an inherently divergent task and requires little memory and can be spread across multiple processors, a cluster of sub-$300 PS3's might not be a bad idea.

  • @NerdInHisShoe
    @NerdInHisShoe 12 лет назад

    @NewLynxS Not true. There are many classes of problems where GPUs will not do well. If there are branches and divergence in the code, it will not run well on the GPU. GPUs are essentially very large SIMD processors. Even if one thread branches, the rest of the threads must stall so that 1 thread can run. This is why it is so exciting to see Intel's new Knights Corner: 50 x86 cores on a single chip.

    @mathhenr The cell was never intended to be the most powerful processor in the world. It was just intended to be able to process a lot of data at a reasonable price.
    My PS3 sometimes tends to lag a bit more when doing tasks compared to my 360. Considering that the 360 is only a 3 core processor, that doesn't say much for the cell.
    It became apparent that Sony included the cell in their PS3 to give their games a graphical boost rather than raw processing power, which is good for games, at least

    you're still missing the point - it has sufficient sdram and vram. yes, 256 of vram is pretty low, i think 512 would have been a better choice but it still works. you proved that the ram in ps3 was faster than ddr3 unless its in triple channel. i'm not sure where you got the info that only 1 core has access to the ram, because a cpu isn't functional without some sort of memory resource. even if that is true, its not designed like a normal x86 cpu

  • @SungazerDNB
    @SungazerDNB 12 лет назад

    I do not own a PS3, however the definition of a supercomputer has nothing to do with it's calculative power, it's about the way it is set up. And as an old-school Unix expert I assure you, the PS3 can be used as a supercomputer. In fact, so can the commodore 64.

  • @NerdInHisShoe
    @NerdInHisShoe 12 лет назад

    @NewLynxS But now you're arguing capabilities, not whether or not SPE's on the same piece of silicon are cores. True, the SPU is less versatile than an x86 processor, but it can still do the same tasks, just inefficiently. Just because the Cell processor is an asymmetric design doesn't mean the SPE's are not cores.

  • @1337ASM
    @1337ASM 14 лет назад

    @MrLivinitup123 no it doesnt give you memory, it will use memory more efficiently. Are you talking about storage space(harddrive space) or memory(like RAM), storage space is NOT memory. You can connect a 2TB harddrive to a PS3.. I havent heard of people having multi TB memory platforms, but if so, it will be some sort of computing cluster. The only difference between the Cell chips in Roadrunner and the Cell chips in the PS3 is that the ones in Roadrunner have all 8 SPE's (PS3 has 6), and it has improved double-precision floating point performance (PowerXCell 8i variant). In terms of performance, the Cells in Roadrunner are 25% faster for single-precision floating-point, and 80% faster for double-precision floating-point.

    @NewLynxS But you're not defining what a 'complete core' is. Going with your Sandy Bridge example, each core has its own execution units, register set, and APIC. Is that what defines a core? That's basically how its defined in Intel's docs (Intel 64 and IA-32 Architectures Software Developers Manual Volume 1 section 2.2.9). Each SPE also has its own execution units, register set, APIC, memory controller and local store.

    It can be a bit ridiculous,but Sony has figured out ways to use the PS3 as an actual SUPERcomputer.

    @schmidtbag it has ONE CORE get that first. the 6 spe arent cores since they cant do anything by themselves, dont acces to ram, cant do integrer operation, can only do post procesing.
    256MB isnt enough since a single gras texture in crysis is 3MB big, so you really need allot of memory. OS takes about 700MB of my ram but a game takes 2GB of it.

    and also it's official that the ps3 supports open gl and that the open gl is far more powerful than direct x if you don't believe me it's official, check it in wikipedia and you can google it and do a comparison yourself

    @NerdInHisShoe therefore it makes them inaccesible
    the ps3's motherboard wasnt specifically designed for supercomputing. mostly graphics. so these cores might be there, but they wont work as lets say... a intel core 2 quad. when it comes to placing a linux OS on one of these, its like using a netbook. its got power, just not that much.

    No not 5 times, likely 3 or 4 times but then again 99% of the people who invest in any sort of similar system do way more than just game. The ps3 is solely for gaming and movie watching. While on home pcs you can do an infinite amount of things. Not to mention the Pc version of BF3 likely requires 5 times more horsepower to run. Kinda works out if you ask me.

    The PS3 is $300, thats a pretty cheap alternative to a PC, especially with the PS3 games, Blu-ray, linux, etc. A $300 PC will just enable you to use the operating system, and not too many games.

  • @PerformanceOverload
    @PerformanceOverload 13 лет назад

    @NewLynxS That is irrelevant the XDR ram in the PS3 is FAST and core's and threads are different YES but the point still remains the more software threads you can run in parallel at the same time Weather thats in a CPU or GPU the BETTER, it means you can have higher quality textures more Polygons just more and better everything, and neither the xbox or PS3 have GDDR5 they both use GDDR3.

    Consoles and PCs are fundamentally the same, both functioning as computers. You cannot compare gaming between them. If you think gaming is about graphical output or how well games run and pushing your limits, then you're wrong. Playing a game on a console and the PC will show you the gameplay remains the same, crappy or not. To me the only difference is the skillset. The controllers are different (but even that can be emulated.)

    @henryhenriquez Oh yes, and lastly [comments are too short] it is 512 MB of XDR ram. This is information from Sony themselves, plus I've taken my PS3 apart and investigated it several times.

  • @joemann797
    @joemann797 14 лет назад

    @chorinicpker Even then, the main problem with the cell is that the code has to be written specifically for it. It's not like the difference between a PPC and a x86_64, where all you need to do is recompile the code to have it work on the different architecture.
    You can recompile linux to work on the cell, but it will only take advantage of the PPE, the SPE will not be used by any application on linux, because they are not regular 'cores' like the PPE.

    With 500 TFLOPS its very decent. And if they had built it with off the shelf computer parts it would had cost 90% more. So I think it was a good choice.

  • @NathanPalmer
    @NathanPalmer 14 лет назад

    @henryhenriquez Well that's innaccurate. The ram is 2x256 XDR RAM which = 512 XDR... I'm talking about MAIN RAM and the CPU, not VRAM, like you are.
    2x256MB XDR Main RAM
    The GPU is locked out for when you have and "Other OS" installed on it, but it's still usable... It doesn't LET you use it when hooked up to another OS.
    Not to mention the GPU can access CPU RAM if needed.

  • @PerformanceOverload
    @PerformanceOverload 13 лет назад

    @NewLynxS I am aware of this but the fact that i was trying to state in the first place still remains the Cell Broadband engine in the PS3 can still run 8 software threads in parallel but because the RSX chip isnt really that powerful 300+ core GPU, mid range amount of cores has 256MB of GDDR3 memory and another 256 in XDR memory, XDR is very quick but there isn't much of it so the GPU is still rather bad, so because not all threads are used in the CPU it also does some of the Vertex stitching.

    @TheSyncImage dude, no one would wanna run an os on an xbox :') hardware coulnt kill a fly nevermind run a decent os , the ps3 was designed for this to be possible, witch is a great design feature and one which no other games console could manage.

  • @NathanPalmer
    @NathanPalmer 14 лет назад

    @henryhenriquez So what you're saying is 256 XDR ram is less than 256 DDR2/DDR3? Yes it is.
    And yes 3.2 GHz. is true. Even IF it wasn't, say, compare it to one of my home PC's processor. This one only has 2.3 GHz Dual core, if the PS3 had 2.3 with 8 cores, it's still a pretty fast system...
    However, it's not only 2.3! it's a 128 bit 3.2 GHz octocore PPC processor. If it wasn't 3.2 octocore, it wouldn't be 128 bit.
    Trust me, I know what I'm talking about...

    Don't get me wrong, I own PS3 and I Love it. I was referring to the RAM [256MB]. Comparing it to an average PC with 2GB or more... The HD is important, especially when we talk about paging intense scenarios; however, the speed of a drive RPM's is very significant factor in the overall performance of the system. PS3 rocks, but as a base for software development system and being called "super computer" is far out from the truth "in my opinion". Anyway, PS3 rocks as a gaming system :-)

  • @NerdInHisShoe

    @NewLynxChannel It does change much. You're not taking into account the SIMD capabilities of the SPU. MIPS alone is a poor measurement of performance, especially these days when things are going parallel.

  • @Napalmdeath420

    @mathhenr the truth is, noone has seen a ps3 in use to its max potential, you see, developers arent programming games yet that take advantage of all the CORES on the processor. ill give you an example, its like having a dual core processor and only running single core apps on it. you see the apps arent taking advantage of that extra core cause they werent written to. i hope you can understand this simple analogy.

    Depends on what games you have in mind. If you want to play Freecell, then you can easily do that with a windows virtual machine (or Wine, if they have a PPC architecture release, which I think they do). But if you're trying to play Crysis and use your PS3 to the fullest that you can, you're not going to be able to due to the amount that Sony's locked it down. They don't allow you to use the graphics acceleration, meaning that you're not going to be able to play awesome looking games. :\

  • @henryhenriquez
    @henryhenriquez 14 лет назад

    @Palmer640 the ps3 only has 256MB XDR and 32MB is reserved for OS.
    so 224MB is avalable for XDR ram really.

  • @Aeduo
    @Aeduo 14 лет назад

    That is, if there's a VMWare binary for PPC Linux. Even then it'd be running in interpreted mode, not virtualized mode. It'll just be unusably slow, and you'd only be able to allocate maybe 400MB of RAM to it, which is well below Windows 7's recommended specs... you might be able to run windows 2000 reasonably wekk, though! :p
