They should have simply made it animated instead, since the Pretties could easily be conveyed, without the need for a golden filter.
An animated version would have genuinely been interesting, you won’t even have to worry about casting actors with a certain “look”.

If they had the money, this movie would have been way better.
The director explained why he cast conventionally attractive people, stating that even pretty people still get work done because it’s never enough. It makes sense to me, however I feel like if you have to explain why in an interview because literally everyone is confused maybe it’s not the move. I for one, would really love to see a teen movie or show like this with average looking people. Now that would be a novel idea!
He could have cast "pretty" people alongside some very average ordinary-looking people and let the audience see the point. But heaven forbid you cast someone like that, in anything produced in the US. Bleh, I have emotions about this.
People that generalize that acute leads me to believe that is how they feel deep down inside, or assume about the average person because their “average” person is still a minor population that does not connect/relate/understand the thought process of normal people.
That's a bs explanation. How did it make sense to you? The movie that supposedly criticizes current beauty standards casts pretty people as uglies. Lol this definitely helped insecure teenagers.

It is a tradition in Hollywood where they don't want ugly people as leads. They did it before in Ready Player One.

everyone keeps saying this would look better animated but i think they could've pulled this off better if they actually used prosthetics and better makeup on the "pretties". higher cheekbones, more symmetrical faces, etc.
I keep thinking about a ye olde Twilight Zone episode on the same theme, where there were only a limited number of body and face types considered pretty, so the visual distinction between "ugly" and what was considered acceptable was nice and clear. Good story, wrapped up in under 30 minutes, plus bonus disturbingly intriguing chain-smoking narrator.
It's basically the hunger games or divergent series since teens seem to love this type of teenager thing of not solving the true problem and sequel baiting

The book series predates the hunger game series/franchise. It’s basically the inspiration for all the dystopian teen movies. This is how bad the adaptation for the show is, they should’ve let people know it was based on a book series and done a way better job with the way they put it all together.

Casting good looking actors as "uglies" is instantly a dumb idea.
Thats coz people only preach about how "beauty standards" are bad, but dont actually want to be ugly. So you cant sell a movie based on YA novel by hiring legit hideous actors - coz the viewers would not want to watch it lol.

@@alexforce9yeah, it’s something that on some level, is just straight up built in to humans, regardless of society, that those we perceive as “better looking” will always be viewed better than those who aren’t, if the current beauty standards didn’t exist, something else would just take its place, because there’ll always be a general consensus on what’s “beautiful”, which is not something that I’ve ever seen conveyed in any story about beauty standards, it’s always “the system” which is part of it, but it’s also sort of innately built into us, the issue is self-esteem not the standards

I watched this from my Netflix homepage. I had no idea about it, haven’t read the books, don’t know what it was. Can I just say I was SO CONFUSED the whole time by the world, and the time. I thought maybe it had been a couple of days but then why was she so into the smoke, she just got there? And I was wondering where her parents were etc. it was extremely simple for a movie lacking so much detail.

I rather liked it, but only for coincidence’s sake. I had reread the uglies series maybe a few days prior without knowledge of this movie coming out. I loved it because it was a new take on the established world that I couldn’t visualize in my head. Plus, I enjoyed the music, however clearly catered it was to preteens looking for an edgy, fantastical story.

I am now 30. I read the first 3 books in middle school & loved it. However, this adaptation fails to capture character & world development; therefore, it just seems like a shallow story when watching this. Add in the bad CGI, it just flops. Thank you for making this funny LME video though!

Oooh, name drop, name drop! I've known the author since his pre-Uglies days, and I loved the first book in this series when I read it a, um, generation ago, argh. I never imagined the kids designated as "uglies" as being so danged conventionally pretty. More like "ordinary" and with some assorted asymmetry, to be converted into Korean-movie-star perfection--but not starting out as such tv-ready-purty types. So much for the casting. Anyway, this was another excellent LME. I chortled, I snickered, I alas still feel obligated to watch the movie.
for what it was it was pretty good. i was obsessed with the books growing up and i’ve literally been waiting years for the movies to come.

You know, 10-15 years ago this could have been a cautionary tale about consumption and overconsuption of beauty products, how the beauty industry distorted our self-image, about pretty privilege, etc. Today though this movie is like that parent who admonishes their kid for smoking, while holding a cigarette in their hand. It feels a bit hollow.

read these books growing up in middle school, and randomly decided to give them a re-read earlier this summer! The movie was definitely lacking things in the book I imagined differently, but still a fun nostalic watch!
It was supposed to be a tv series. But they kept putting it on tbe backburner. I pretty much don't listen to reviews like this because CLEARLY he hasn't read the books. Find reviews of the movie who know the books well and compare what's different and what was kept, what was changed
