Canon gave the best, most nuanced & objective take on this debate I've seen thus far. I appreciate hearing an industry insider's perspective.

You know what else is crazy? The fact that Eminem has sold records to a point that he competes with pop stars as far as sales go yet people will mention that his fan base is not the core hip hop audience, isn’t that what influence is about? Isn’t influence measured by how your impact can go beyond your reach?
Em sells more than pop stars. He's in the top 10 of all Artist of every musical genre. The pop stars ur thinking of are not even in the conversation with sales.

Canon put it perfectly. Jay Z has way more impact on the culture (black culture) and Em is more world wide not to say Jay isn't world wide but Em's numbers don't lie he got like 2 or 3 diamond albums and all the others are multi platinum. @@matthewbonner100 that’s because foreigners won’t understand a majority of what Jay raps about. All the nuances are not understood on first listen. “Same” is a good answer to be real
Sorry but em Eminem's worldwide impact is on another level.
It doesn't matter to core Hip Hop fans. Eminem doesn't have nearly the impact for the people who actually matter and set the trends in Hip Hop. The tastemakers and historians who know this culture inside and out wouldn't mention Eminem in the same breath as Jay Z and that is a fact. Vanilla ice was a terrible rapper and I can assure that he still probably gets more love in other countries than Rakim and other legends. 'International' recognition isn't a factor to the people who KNOW Hip Hop. Foreigners will always prefer 'white faces'. That's just the world we live in.

Em & Hov are the Rock and Stone Cold of rap
That’s a fact.. the rock being Hov and stone cold being Em.. cuz the rock was flashy, he was about the money chasing different things in his career and he was braggadocio ..like Hov in a sense ..to where stone cold only cared about the art. He came to raise hell and kick ass. He wasn’t flashy. @@onyxonyx4744 Dang you just dissed Kendrick Lamar, Jcole, Jay Z, 50 Cent, Andre 3000, half of the battle rap scene, Nas, Rakim and of bunch of other highly respected hiphop artists by calling them those things for holding Em in high regard and expressing how important he is in the culture.
Facts always come up to eminem first for hiphop debate isn't that make him the GOAT!
I think Jay Z’s impact is more niche than Em’s. When you list the amount of artist that Em has influenced, and his hand in one of the most impactful hip hop media platforms (sway) and then talk about how Jay had people dressing a way for that short period, and targeting auto tune (something essential in hip hop today so clearly his anti auto tune rhetoric had no impact), I don’t see how this is as nuanced as Don is making it. I think that Jay is the best at what he does, but being the best doesn’t mean being the most impactful.
The difference is you CAN'T count how many rappers Jay has influenced b/c it's basically EVERYONE post '96. He's your favorite rapper's favorite rapper. Eminem himself even said he was influenced by Jay lol. Jay influenced the INFLUENCERS. Lil' Wayne, Drake, Kanye, Kendrick, Cole, Dipset, The Lox, Fabolous, Pusha T and basically every street rapper that has gotten respect has sited Jay as an influence! Rocafella as a label and RocNation management have been extremely influential in the careers of countless rappers. Let's not talk about how every rapper has a clothing line, liquor and sneakers because of the blueprint that Jay and Dame built. Stop it. There's a lot for you to learn about Jay's impact on Rap. Eminem is NOT more impactful to the core of Hip Hop than Jay. It's not even close. Casual listeners who like fast rapping but can't understand nuance and depth in writing will of course prefer Eminem. They don't know half of what Jay is even talking about. It has to be broken down for them. PLUS European features are more celebrated in this world and you know it. Being 'white' simply is an advantage and we would be ignorant to deny this.
@@onyxonyx4744 the roc nation point is a good one, really is your only valid one.
1. Half of the artist you named also have admitted to be influenced by em, when you play the influence derivative game, you take away credit from other artist, so I’m not rocking with that point. (Edit- like bro you naming Drake like his primary influences arent Wayne and Kanye, giving jayz the credit for Drake is just taking away the magnitude of what Drake and Wayne did, not to say that Jay didn’t influence the artist, but your giving him more credit than he deserves with the “influencing the influencer” bs, cus in that case we can just say that grandmaster flash is the greatest influencer ever right? No that would be ridiculous)
2. There’s a lot for YOU to learn about if you think the casual listener of hip hop cares about fast rapping/Eminem
3. I already said Jay z was the best no need for you to explain Rap, on a surface level at that
4. You saying that Jay Z has more of a Core influence just reiterates the point I was making in the first place.
5. Moving your whole argument to the “Core” is just moving the goal post
6. You bringing up him being white like that’s not already a given the privilege it gives him.
Get rid of your bias
I’d say Ems impact is more niche.
🇿🇦 Eminem undoubtedly changed Hip-Hop globally

50 always speaks facts
Well he said the gay painter comment because he's bothered that Jay made it sound like Eminem wanting 50 to join him at the Super Bowl was a burden. I think Eminem has more influence/impact on individual rappers/artists. Jay has more of a general impact on the culture as a whole
Eminem 20 times more impactful the Hov
Eminem is 20x more impactful than Hov to people in the suburbs and foreigners. When it comes to the people who make Hip Hop 'tick'. It's not even close. Jay has always and will always matter' more.
😂 🥛 people
People really confuse bigger artist with bigger impact. Eminem didn't move the culture, he moved HIMSELF. Saying you don't know who Jay-z OR Eminem is just means you don't Hip-Hop. If Eminem had really impacted the culture then more lyrical rappers would be selling millions of records but they're not.Hip hop moved more towards Artists starting their own labels and brands like Hov. Eminem's biggest artist is 50 Cent who doesn't have a lyrically bone is his body while People don't know who Royce Da 5'9 is and Royce has been with Eminem since day 1!!! But if you know Jay then you know Kanye, Rihanna, J Cole etc. As well as rappers he's influenced like Wayne, Drake, Nicki, Kendrick etc. It's not even close.. 50 will say that Eminem had a bigger impact when 50 himself didnt even follow Eminem's blueprint.... HE FOLLOWED HOV'S.
Em by far, anybody who disagrees lives under a giant Yankee hat
Honestly I’m probably the only one who thinks Jay-Z is overrated. It’s some songs I do like tho. However, I feel like if Biggie was still alive people wouldn’t be talking about Jay like they do now.

You're not the only 1 by far. Lol.
No disrespect to Jay. He's had great longevity & a hellava run of albums.
But, I definitely think the early passing of Biggie & Big L, helped Jay out cause he kinda filled that role &, their fan bases. (And also took a lot of Biggies bars. Lol)
Nas kinda slid for a minute too, which helped keep Jay as nyc's #1.
He's a smart businessman, ya gotta give him that. & he's definitely had impact but he's not in my top 10. But I don't hate on anyone who puts him in theirs.
I'm am older head, so I still got Cube & Scarface in my personal top 5, with Nas, Em & Wutang always gets a slot. (My list)
But, I'll take Busta, Tunechi, 3k, Jada before Hov. And again, no hate involved.
It's all subjective. Listen to what hits you sonically & internally.
If we want to talk about to influence then let’s talk about it. Em is the best selling rap artist. Em made it cool for white kids to rap. Em made 8 Mile, putting the spot light on battle rap. Em invented the term Stan which is still used to this day. Em revived Dre’s career and helped jumpstart Aftermath records.Em blew up 50 and the whole G Unit along with him. Em brought out D12. Em pushed Slaughterhouse and Griselda, the moat hardcore rap groups ever. Em shouted all the legendary rappers out on the Grammies. Jay on the other hand had people drinking crystal lol. Jay did bring us State Property and Kanye, I guess you can throw in Memphis Bleek too. I don’t know how much influence he had on J Cole being this big, but I’ll give him that. Jay just had a bunch of business ventures and a relationship with Beyonce that’s pretty much it.
Lmaoo that’s a very intellectually dishonest assessment
I think without both Em and Jay hip-hop would be years behind. Jay with his two albums with R Kelly, the album with Linkin Park (brought in different genres) and making 10 or 20 black millionaires and Em bringing a lot of new fans into hip-hop and taking hip-hop to new markets globally.
And 50… gotta say it cause people always forget 50 when it comes to Em’s accolades and that’s a HUGE contribution to the culture. Along with producing and making beats for 50, Lloyd banks (his biggest hits and alot of his first album), Tony, and even gave buck 1
Em made black millionaires too. What a dumb aspect of an argument
@@BurnieISgod666 No one said he didn't.
World wide its eminem without question
Jay has more of an influence of the curation of Hip Hop which starts here in America. He has more of an influence of the 'pulse'/core of Hip Hop than Eminem does. And this is FAR more important because America is still the leader in Hip Hop culture. Fans that can't name one KRS 1 song and are overall casual listeners don't really matter to people who live and breathe Hip Hop. MOST Eminem fans fit this criteria and that includes foreigners.
@@onyxonyx4744 without these foreigners your fav rappers would be either dead, in jail or selling crack in the streets.
I remember playing ball with Cannon on fair street in Atlanta. Before the fame. Cool guy
Eminem has always paid homage and recognised that there’s a difference between mainstream and within the culture. He cares about the hiphop world, he’s a hiphop nerd, he and his content is true to himself and doesn’t reflect the experiences of black culture but his skills and craft is a product of the culture. He’s respected as an MC by his peers. No one serious thinks he isn’t an elite MC and lyricist - even if they don’t enjoy it artistically. Those skills are the product of black culture and black people who gave him a platform. Eminem constantly explains this himself. He isn’t bigger than Jay in the culture and listen to White America and he explains why he’s bigger in the mainstream.
Why don't people cherish the fact that 2pac, Jay ,Dre ,Em , 50 and Snoop are most likely the reason that HIP HOP is No1 genre worldwide and try to discredit one artist to praise another? other genres of music like Rock don't have to release another album and they become legends touring worldwide with the same songs for 30-40 years. Whether you like it or not Em is a legend and one of the most influential, he might not make music that resonates with the hood apart from few early songs but don't act like he ain't saying anything from trauma to relatioships, from addiction to recovery to fun and stupid records to commercial and stadium anthems to rappity rap songs.
Don't put jay z up there with those guys. Jay z is not on that level
*50 Cent always right tho 😌*

I have been around hip-hop since it started. I don't care what anyone says, Eminem is the best rapper out. Lyrically Jay-Z cannot touch Eminem.
Lyrically yes but Jay has better albums. And is a better business man.
Globally Eminem is bigger than hiphop in general. Some people only listen to Eminem and no other hiphop. Em is amazing, but I'd rather listen to Jay.
I think people need to stop pretending Eminem has only white fans. If you like a certain type of hiphop then I can understand you would not gravitate as much to Eminem. Eminem speaks on more universal topics that are relatable to any race and that is also a reason why he is internationally more known. Yes you can say other people cannot understand what Jay Z raps about since it is very much about black american culture. But i dont see how that puts Jay on a higher position. You could also argue that makes Jay less relatable since he is only actually relatable to a small population. I think what people always try to make it is that only black american opinions matter on hiphop, but being black does not automatically validate your opinion over someone else. hiphop knowledge of people of other color might be way more advanced than some of the black americans.

@@muleyamwiinga3988 I've never heard anyone say put that Jay on
The reason Jay is the goat is because he dictated the culture since the 90s but he also managed to evolve his sound. He's talking about being a father and husband and creating generational wealth. Em is rapping about farting on your sneakers.
Em raps evolved more than jay z
@@tapiacortes2686 lol no it hasn't at all. In fact, it's clearly gone backwards

One of India's most popular rapper is named Emiway (Eminem+Wayne). Em, Jay, 50 and Wayne are the Mt. Rushmore when it comes to global rap.
Please bhai.
Take away jay and replace him with 2pac. Also add snoop to the list.

Yes Snoop is a cultural icon as well.
@@varunkhatri3199 That's so untrue but go off.
Im over people always trying to pit 2 greats against each other just to get the 2 fandoms to fight. I’m a big admirer of both artists and they’re both artists that I listen to everyday. Is Em more popular in the world? Yes. But Jay has transcended from not just being the most consistent rapper in the booth but a mogul as well. Em to me is MJ and Jay is Prince or Vice Versa. I would say Ems a better rapper. Jays a better artist/businessman. They both 🐐s PERIOD.
Tell me? Tell what crown Jay Z ever held? He’s never had the hottest album for a year EVER. He was always outshined infact so outshined by everyone around him from Big L to Biggie to DMX to 50 to Nas from stealing songs from other artists like Payroll - Never Change. It’s that Ether, shxt that makes his soul burn slow.
Even his “classic” albums are garbage “Ain’t no Nxgga” is the worst song on any supposedly classic album I’ve ever heard.
Worse than Braveheart party on stillmatic?
The Black Album is considered the best hip hop album of 2003
@@pandabear1576 great album but get rich by 50 is better
@@merthalilsofu2238 that’s your opinion which I won’t argue with but most people do not agree with you. The Black Album has always been held in a higher regard in hip hop album rankings from black and white Americans alike
Blueprint?
Drake, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Kendrick Lamar, Jay Electronica, J Cole, Rocafella and Roc Nation (what Jay-Z helped bring to hip hop)
50 Cent, D12 (what 50 brought to rap)
They are not the same 😂
Not Ems fault lol
Love the podcast u should have left that joe podcast
Wayne has had the biggest impact on the culture of you look at how rap is today
And Wayne was HEAVILY influenced by Jay.
Wayne is a child of Jay’s. So much so he has a verse of Jays tattooed on his arm.
Em my favorite rapper. I wouldn't care if he no impact. Still my favorite. But if I'ma debate his influence was huge. Most rappers sounded like him in the 2000s. Kendrick. Cole etc. Now hov did have a hand in some of the best artists ever. Kanye Rihanna Cole again. It's apple to oranges. Also em is white and he gets hated crazy because of that. Who would of thought
Impact on Hip Hop culture not on casuals. Jay-Z, hands down. Commerce is not culture.
Why make it seem like Em's impact is just numbers from white kids around the world??
Nobody ever seems to mention the actual Art of Rap itself, His skill set as Lyricist is Literally being studied at university
Besides the early years when he rapped fast Jay has stuck with the same cadence and topics the whole time
whereas Em has evolved his skill set as a MC and created flows and pockets that had never been done before
there are countless great black and white mainstream and underground lyricists on video talking about how much they were influenced by what he did not just what he said
Let Kendrick tell you ruclips.net/video/4lPD5PtqMiE/видео.html
Jay, Nas, Kendrick, Lupe Fiasco just to the name a few are being studied at Universities. It isn't some new phenomenon that has only happened with Em's work.
@@onyxonyx4744 No Jay?
Jay did look like that painter
Black barbershops talking bout Hov but white teens in playgrounds all over the world know every word of Lose Yourself and Rap God. Who has the biggest impact on black culture or Hip-Hop culture or the world? Different questions with different answers.
odd you didnt mention, not afraid, mockingbird or beautiful, or the motivational songs, no1 must listen to those i guess
@Yanisel Garcia Get off his nuts, I said what I said. Math is a battle rapper but average black people don't bump Em. I'm black, I love Eminem but I won't play him when my cousins come round. It is what it is.
And the people in those barbershops are representative of the PULSE of the culture. Where it actually comes from. The kids in the suburbs have no say so on what trends in Hip Hop. This is not even a conversation. Jay has been more impactful to Hip Hop by FAR.
Em in the thumbnail
Eminem bigger
From 🇿🇦
Canon kept it a bean
But Canon also left out quite a bit on Jay's side. It's not really close. Jay's impact on Hip Hop culture is significantly more if we are talking about where things are created and trends are set. Em is more impactful to casual listeners who know little to nothing about Hip Hop and its history. That's it.
Biggest internationally is 50 cent or lil wayne
Eminem!!
it's true south Africa honestly don't regard Jay top 5 it's a US thing.. Em is had a massive impact worldwide he is bigger and and played a hell of a lot more by a landslide even wayne get mentioned more.
Jay still has a presence in South Africa though. Tupac is debatable as well
*Don Cannon
The fact that people are saying Eminem is nuts but that’s what being white does.

@@lordrassoull6216 🤣 another internet gangsta
Maaaan it's over for this pod move along
Em definitely
SIMPLE ANSWER = OBVIOUSLY Jay-Z's WAY more valuable to HIP-HOP than Eminem BECAUSE HE'S BLACK, FROM THE GHETTO + HE'S THE "KING" OF HIP-HOP, sitting on the THROWN FOR DECADES #WatchTheThrown = if EM wanted the CROWN, all he had to do was TAKE IT FROM JAY-Z, like a TRUE Hip-Hop MC would, if they felt a bit "froggy" that day, but he DIDN'T because that would risk his CAREER against the DON
Em cant go out without being malled by people. Jayz id out all the time. Jayz needed Em to do that NY to Detroit tour because he wasnt doing very good on sales etc.
Jay who? not even close, even in the slum village in India knows who Eminem is
Wayne > Jay
Thats it!!
Jay Z is a house slave. He’d sell his fans for $1. This isn’t even a discussion.
I think their impact is about the same but focused on different areas. Jay is more so on the curator tastemaker side and Eminem is more on the rapping and lyricists side. If you are a lyrical rapper who came up in the 21st century Em is most likely one of the guys that you studied or looked up to, Kendrick, J Cole, Big Sean, Odd Future, and even Frank Ocean have all talked about Eminem's influence. And there's all the battle rap leagues that started appearing all over the world after 8 Mile.
Every person you mentioned has mentioned Jay as an influence and Jay has even influenced Eminem himself! Jay has influenced virtually EVERYONE post '96. He's influenced the influencers. Lil' Wayne, Kanye, Drake, Dipset, The Lox, Fabolous, Pusha T, Beanie Sigel Lupe Fiasco, Jay Electronica. I can go on and on. Eminem has NOT influenced more NOTABLE people than Jay. As I said even Eminem has said Jay influenced him. Jay had a HUGE influence on the rap label format with Rocafella and Now Roc Nation management. Jay is responsible for freaking Kanye West!! Do you know how many people Kanye has influenced? Jay's influence 'tree' is SIGNIFICANTLY greater than Eminem's if we are talking rappers.
@@onyxonyx4744 Everybody has MULTIPLE influences but when you listen to most lyrical rappers who came after Eminem, you can here more Em than Jay especially when it comes to transparency like showing the world your insecurities and demons. Kanye has talked about the effect Eminem had on him as an artist and as a producer he was influenced by J Dilla and Dr Dre. College Drop probably wouldn't have been as successful if it wasn't for what Em did on MMLP and The Eminem Show. Everybody else was still on street shit or club music. Yeah Jay is one of the guys that Em studied but it was rappers like LL, Redman, Treach, and Pharoahe Monch that really inspired him.
@@Serching4JerryGarcia You're saying a load of crap. TCD would've been just fine without Eminem

As far as impact goes I can mention at least 5 rappers who have had a bigger global reach musically than him. Beyoncé has more impact than Jay.
Is Beyonce a rapper?
But it wasnt jay z quoted by the Ukranian Ministry of Defense during a time of war…
Jay Z got impact in black culture. Nem is a worldwide icon. Sorry not sorry…
Nas wins #YouOweMe
lmao excuses are so wild Lmaoooo first of all “Truthfully I wanna rhyme like common sense..but I sold 5 million, I haven’t rhymes like Common since..since, you now know what I’m up against” -Hov
So stop it buddy. Jay isn’t that intricate with the raps my boi. That’s cap.. Em is wayyyyyyyyy more intricately sound then Jay. Jay is a simple rapper with clear and obvious verbiage. The only time he loses folks is when he talks that drug talk but that’s not the reason his reach isn’t like Ems.. Ems reach is the way it is cuz he let the fans into his life. Gave them a front seat to his Culture, childhood, problems, drug addiction lifestyle, struggles of being a single dad of 3 little girls, his love hiphop, the ones he pays homage to, his respect for the craft and continuous dedication to the ART FORM of HipHop. That’s why Ems reach is light years ahead of Jay.. let me remind you
“Men lie women lie..numbers don’t” - Hov
His numbers are not even half of what Ems was or are today.. Spotify Em Is Top 2 most streams n monthly listeners(he’s competing with Drake) .. but currently kicking January as the most streamed rapper so far.. RUclips? He’s number one.. and second place only has half his views(Drake) n he hasn’t dropped an album in 3 years … Drake dropped 3 projects to maintain his spot.. if Em drops another album this year then he’s gonna leave Drake in the dust… his influence is also further on hiphop than Jay. No rapper today or even back then have sounded like or tried to sound like and were actually successful doing so.. Cole said he was an Eminem bite when first started rapping during his mixtapes days. He got signed from Jay (ironically) using that sound Cole said Em and Nas were his biggest influences..kdot said he studied Ems MMLP album like it was the Bible.. tryna figure out his rhyme patterns. They asked him directly on a radio show “is Em the goat? Not including yourself…he said I think is the ONE” Akon had a chance to sign Drake before Wayne. Said he didn’t sign him cuz he sounded way too much like an Eminem clone.. Drake has said twice publicly that “Em is the greatest rapper to ever touch a microphone” so basically what I’m telling you is.. Em has influenced the future goats of hiphop. More than Hov..and it’s evident. Em is about the art form and the culture, Hov is about the money and the business. And he tells you on every feat he does. SMACK DVD said that after watching 8 mile they started recording battles in Harlem..today SMACK is known as URL bettor league. It’s the biggest battle rap league in the world. And Em influenced that culture..many other battle rap league came out after smack. Alllllll that has to be credited to Em.. battle rap league love and show a great deal of respect to Em because he’s the one..he battle rapped his way all the way to the very top.. he did it on pure skill and will.. he rapped his way to the top. He didn’t sing his way like drake, he didn’t do a million features for acceptance. He do a bunch of club hits. He has his own gimmickie record but he stayed him. He had fun. He was still being himself. And even on those records. He was rapping rapping. He didn’t dumb it down to sell more records. Actually Em is way more lyrical today than he was back then and he’s still on top. And for those that wanna say it’s only because he’s white, let me give you one fun fact.. put your feeling to the side for a second. There has not been one rapper before Em or after Em that has ever even snifffffed the success, record sales, respect from his peers or skills that has earned and displayed. Not one. You need to be good enough.. Mac Miller. Dope MC, didn’t even sniff Em success, Yelawolf. Signed to Em. Super talented. Lyrical and can sing. Didn’t even sniffffff his success..bubba Spark, dope rapper had timbaland behind. Didn’t sniff it.. MGK dope rapper. Had billionaire Diddy behind him. Didn’t even sniff it. Lol Paul wall. Dope. Everyone loved him. Didn’t sniff it. G easy.. dope rapper. Not even close. Asher Roth. Tried to sound like Em n the culture actually sucked with him. Didn’t come Close to the success..Jack Harlow, Slim Jesus 😂, Action Bronson, Tom Macdonald , Logic (revered as white but he’s half black or 25% black) and the list goes on and on..those rapers didn’t see Em success because they didn’t have Ems passion, lyrical ability, image, culture battle rap credibility, co-signs from 80s goats like LL COOL J, Run DMC asked Eminem to induct them into the rock and roll hall of fame, Rakim the GoD MC called Em the Ali of rap, Kool G Rap said Em and Nas were the only rappers to impress him lyrically he said Em blew him away, list goes on.. that’s why Em is where he is at. He went thru so much to get here. Those other rappers are just automatically accepted into this culture cuz Em paved the way. But Em wasn’t accepted. He fought for his spot. He’s the first of his kind and last.. Em is like Tupac. They’ll never two more rappers like that. Biggie style and skill can be duplicated, Jay can be duplicated nas has duplicated kook g rap and Rakim, Em only sound like Em..Pac only sound like Pac
Buddy, stop talking. No one cares
