+johnra 1 Thanks John, Im stoked that people are getting something from these. (one never really knows?) I enjoy making these and its such a nice bonus that they can offer something to the VC. I really appreciate the comment mate. Cheers. - K
Superb session - informative, entertaining and clearly a noble effort exerted on your part! I've dabbled in Magma thanks to the VC, but this lesson provided proper context for me. Thanks very much for taking the time to educate; I really enjoyed! Mike -Halifax
+M Jones Hey there Mike, Thanks so much for the kind words and comments mate.I do get great pleasure from making these videos. But its a nice bonus that others find something in them that they like as well:-) If you enjoyed Magma, then some of these records will be worthwhile checking out as well. Take care mate. - K
I'm a bit lost for words, Khristian. Never heard about this style. But also there is no connection or cross reference with any of the albums or artist I own. This makes me curious, and want to discover more. Although I live close to France, not much of this scene seems to have crossed the border. Thanks for introducing and making this video. All the best. /Paul
+X junkie NL Hey Paul, Wow! Im so surprised about this. But Im glad i could offer you something new to explore. Magma, is definitely something to check out for you. Its a must:-) From there, you will know if this genre of music is for you or not. Thanks so much for watching Paul, Take care - K
+Siren05 I noticed the early Magma albums are reissues recently. Will start there, it's on the want list. Still a bit in the dark and curious what to expect. /Paul
+X junkie NL Hey Paul. Yes I think they have been reissued. Type in this title into RUclips for a sample: magma mekanik destruktiw kommandoh. Happy listening. -K
***** Hey there. Thanks for the comments. I have definitely heard the music of Ruins and Hyakkei and have made reference to them towards the end of the video. But i dont actually have any of their records to show. The Japanese style of Zeuhl is something i definitely need to explore more. Thanks for the heads up! Cheers- K
+Ben Costello Hey Ben, Did you catch the result of the game? One of the most memorable endings to an AFL match in recent history. Pies by 1 point with 4 seconds to go. www.afl.com.au/match-centre/2016/2/coll-v-rich The Weidorje is so great. Its one of the first ones i got in this lot and it turned me onto the style big time. And yes, the Bass in particular from Bernard Paganotti is sensational. What a great sound! His '85' solo project is also awesome, though i haven't pounced on a vinyl copy yet. Thanks for watching mate. - K
Yep, just watched the highlight package this morning (and there were many). His 4th goal, on the turn, best of the bunch for me. 6 goals, some haul. Nathan Buckley's black and white army.
Really cool stuff Khris. I love learning about music so I love watching and reading about scenes like this. I'm familiar with some French music and bands because I'm a big fan of the French Cold Wave scene from the late 70's and early 80's but I wasn't aware of this Zuehl scene. I'm going to look into it a little further, I like what I heard from the few snippets you played in this video. Great stuff!
+erick medeiros Hey Erick, Thanks for watching and commenting mate. Im intrigued by your mention of the French 'Cold Wave' sound. I love music from this period and i think in France especially there was a surge in experimentation. Can you drop a couple of names? No doubt there will be some crossover with all of the music we explore from this period and place. Thanks mate. - K
The coldwave scene is basically the french diy post-punk scene, but more particularly I guess it references a bunch of bands with a certain cold and dark flavour of post-punk owing a lot to Joy Division in particular, but probably some gothic rock and things as well. In addition to being used mainly in France, I’ve seen it used for some polish bands like Siekiera, and the odd example in some other european countries. But I personally consider it to be a vague descriptor for french diy post-punk. Ruth, Asylum Party and Trisomie 21 are among the well known french bands. I guess this is 5 years ago and you probably learned about it since then. But found the comment unanswered, so. :)
Hi Khristian, Very well done once again. To know that Vander developed this Kobian language through the music is amazing. I have heard quite a few themed and concept albums but I never heard one where the writer developed a whole new language. My question is did that language follow through on any other albums or was it developed for the Kobia album only? I appreciate you showing the other bands/albums that were in this whole Zeuhl movement. Fascinating update. The UTO 'Rituale Alieno' sounds cool. Making a note of it now. I love learning about all Italian bands. Have a nice weekend. Always a pleasure seeing you and all the details you put into these videos~ Rob/Boston
+Paneeks1960 {Rob/Boston} Hey Rob, Thanks mate. I reckon Christian Vander is one of the most amazing and underrated innovators in modern music. The 'Kobaian language' was created and used by Magma but was also often used in the other releases to come out of this genre. Pretty amazing huh? The UTO is worthwhile if you like this style of music for sure. Thanks for watching Rob and for the great comments. Take care. - K
Hi Khristian thanks so much for a wonderful and well researched video. I really enjoyed it and will follow up on some bands you mentioned that I am not familiar with. I was wondering if you feel that there are any crossovers between Magma and rock in opposition bands like Univers zero, present and art zoyd?
Hey Ronald, Thanks heaps for watching and leaving a comment. Yep! There is definitely a crossover with Zeuhl/Avant Prog and the RIO movement but I thought I'd save those for another video as it is certainly an entirely different scene. Thanks again for watching and I'm glad you found something here you liked. Cheers. -K
Hi Khristian,I've yet to fully dip my toe into the Magma universe, mainly due to their records being so pricey.Just have Köhntarkösz so far, must give it a spin now.Ha,ha thats some list of ex Magma members,to paraphrase Mark E Smith if its Christian Vander and your granny on bongos its Magma.Very interesting list of albums by related groups that I'm mainly not familiar with.I remember Some Deaths Take Forever being shown by Carm (Gorvo 31). Great update, have agood weekend. Dave.
+darkdubh Hey Dave. Hahaha! I've never heard that expression before but it made me laugh to read it in your comment as it is so accurate!! Yes, i recall seeing the Sjazner record shown a few times around the place. Cheers mate. - K
Awesome! I love the detail you put into your videos as well as your love for music. I feel you are a kindred spirit really. These videos are great! Are you planning to do anything krautrock-related in the future? :)
Hey there, Thanks so much man. What a great compliment! I actually planned a whole series of these with several more genres including Krautrock but i just got busy at work and havent had the time. Thanks for the message though. I will do some more soon. Glad you found some things in this video you liked! Cheers - K
are you a fan of the newer reformed magma records? Personally I think K.A and Emehntett Re rival their classic records of the 70s, very rarely have I heard a band from the 70s come back 30 years later and put out music that rivals that from their hey day
Hey thanks for commenting! K.A is brilliant for sure and is just as good (if not better and more refined), but I don't own it and do I couldn't show it here. Admittedly, I haven't heard E R yet, but from your recommendation, I'll endeavour to check it out. Cheers for stopping by! -K
Excellent video! You have a pretty stellar zeuhl collection. that Weidorje is one I haven't been able to track down. I know it's been reissued, but I just love the Cobra label. I need to grab Eskaton's 4 Visions before they are all gobbled up. I lucked out somewhat recently with getting a copy of their first LP. do you know if the Archaia reissue is still readily available? I have that one digitally...great stuff. The Eider Stellaire is currently one of my big wants, but probably something I will have to wait to get reissued. Dun too. I need to go back and watch your Canterbury video...I haven't had a chance to get to that one yet. cheers.
+bostonianreggie Hey man, The Weidorje is well worthwhile i think. It was an early purchase for me but even back then it was pricey. I got pretty lucky with the Eskaton's and the Dun. But the rest, i paid the higher price tags for. I just really love the genre and i find it fascinating and worthwhile owning. Not too sure about the Archaia reissue. I did find this though: www.discogs.com/sell/item/304854017 The reissue sounds good to me. Im still yet to find a good, well priced copy of Eider Stellaire, but i will have it someday:-) Thanks for watching man. Take care - K
Once again you're putting everything together for me. Thank you so much for sharing this history. Fantastic series.

thanks! you set me off on a treasure hunt. i love it
The movie and iceburg "The Bad Batch" influenced by Joborowski brought me here!!
