In this Video Editor Reacts, I react to Taylor Swift - Blank Space. This is my 4th reaction off of Taylor Swift's album 1989. Not only do I do a reaction to Blank Space, but I talk about some of the video editing techniques used throughout the music video! Once again, Taylor Swift doesn't disappoint!

This song was actually written as a response to the media, the media called her a serial dater that collects men like toys, she then embraced it and wrote this song playing the character they made her out to be. HER MINDDDDDD!!!!
Most people see negativity as bad, Taylor sees it as an opportunity to make art.

Two things I noticed :
At the beginning of the video, as long as their relationship is perfect, everything is tripod- or dolly- shot, super smooth and stable, and as soon as the fight starts, it switches to handheld and shaky!
And in the deer scene, she wears a leopard dress! I think it’s no coincidence, and could symbolize the predator finally revealing herself from the « prey/trophy wife » she appeared like at the beginning.
This is her playing the character that the media painted her, she said “this person they’re saying i am, she would be interesting” so she made the song and this amazing video
You're totally right that she didn't actually hit the car. There is a behind the scenes of this music video where you can see her pretending to hit the car and she is holding like half a golf club so the clubhead and the damage to the car are both cgi.
And like a lot of other people have said in the comments, this song is a commentary on how the media portrayed Taylor as a "crazy serial dater" for dating two people in a year and a half. She said "that's actually an interesting character they're writing about. Like she jetsets around the world collecting men and she can get any of them but she's so clingy that they leave and she cries. And she gets another one trapped in her web and locks them in her mansion. So I was like 'I could use this'."
Her acoustic performance of this at the Grammy Museum is amazing and she gives a great speech beforehand.
This is why her dancers (& eventually Taylor) are swinging golf clubs during the eras tour. The dancers fake busting up the car. It’s so cool the way she dove into every era on the tour. We need your reaction to the movie, eventually!
The "Experience" part was a separate video with some references back to the clip, but you could look around in 3D and there were tasks/items to find. Sort of a mini game.
This video actually had a app where you could watch it in 3D!
Fun thing to note is when she is in the hallway with her new painting-the old painting behind her of her old “lover” has an axe in it 😂
Those shoes are Louboutin, the trademark is the gloss red sole but it just happens to fit with the Red album. Look at any of her costumes on tour, they’re nearly always Louboutins maybe with the exception of the odd pair of flat pumps or chunky ankle boots.
This is a fabulous analysis of this video, Taylor’s mind and creative artistry always works in mysterious ways and you’re right she’s a really good actress, if it just so happened she hadn’t been blessed with a great voice she’d have still made it as an actress or a screen writer because she’s a damned fine songwriter.
The shoes are Louboutin, a very high-end shoe, Taylor also wears a lot of different Louboutin footwear for her Eras Tour.
Was coming here to inform him. Wouldn’t expect any straight men to know about Louboutins 😂😂😂

I forgot to add that the red bottom is a trademark for Louboutin. If you have ever watched the show Sex in the City, the main character loves shoes, so I learned a lot about shoe designers.
Dont mean to spam your comment section but i do really enjoy these. So the car being smashed up they bought it back for the eras tour and the car is like a big 3d picture that forms on the stage as it rises out the ground and all the dancers get light up hockey sticks and as they hit the "car" it appears damaged and its really cool! You need to see the eras movie
Love your reactions! There’s a behind the scenes of this where it shows that she didn’t hit the car. The golf club was actually shorter and was just a stick that they added the end to and made it look like a club.
Would love to see you do Delicate. Not from 1989, but you'd love all the transitions!!
I've been watching you for 5 months now since you did antihero and I never thought to even look up an editor reacting to videos. I had forgotten about how much I loved to film and edit in highschool. Seniors would make short films, kill bill was big back then and I remember doing that one the most. But no one at the school could edit the videos except for me and I was a sophomore. I absolutely loved loved loved editing the mini movies. It made me so happy. I like being behind the camera. I wish I would have kept up with it after high school because I feel like a lot has probably changed. But my point is that I didn't remember any of that until I watched your antihero video. And I miss that so much. I was really good at it and loved it. So thanks for bringing back the memories, I could instantly tell you love it as well. 💙💙💙

i think it was put to make blank space being more blended in with other 1989 mvs. in theme and aesthetic, apart from 'city girl' theme there is this 'wood/wild' theme that could be noticed in 1989 mvs like in out of the wood, wildest dreams, style and it create contrast.

I've really enjoyed you doing the 1989 music videos. Each is made like a movie, I was going to say except for the new romantica MV but even now that MV is like a movie due to the Eras Tour movie. I just realized that while typing and my mind is blown. Wow Taylor is amazing 💙💙💙
I have no idea wether she really destroyed the car or not, but I can definitely see it being difficult to hit the headlight spot on (on the first take as well) so it's definitely possible that she missed the first time so they used cgi on that 😅

Well, others have already told you all about the meaning of this song. What I’ll add to give more context in general is that not only is 1989 so huge for her and us fans (the TV was amazing and you posting 2 videos in a day made it even better!) because it’s her first pop album, but it’s also the first time we hear her more openly being fed up with the narrative media keeps spitting out about her. You can see it in Shake It Off too (and now, “Slut!”, a song from 1989 TV). Clearly this is nothing to the very clearly spelled out ‘fuck you’ that is Reputation and everything coming after that.
To me Blank Space is the prequel of The Man, she’s just very tired of this double standards of picking women apart for every single thing like relationships while men are just given a clap on the back and a Playboy rep. Taylor was 25 here, I mean come on, leave the girl alone! But yeah the storytelling of this video and her acting are SO GOOD, I love her crazy looks. I don’t know if you noticed but all the paintings shown are not just the guy in the video, it’s her “long list of ex-lovers” that she still keeps framed on the wall destroyed, one has a freaking axe stuck in it. It’s one of my favourite details.
I think this video and Wildest Dreams have the best shots and narrative, but I still can’t wait for you to see my beloved Style because I think the editing on that one is just so so so good.
FUN FACT: some was filmed at Oheka Castle in Huntington, NY on Long Island. it's crazy because i didn't become a big swiftie until 2021 and i went to my best friend's sister's wedding there in 2017. i've seen this music video in 2014 but didn't learn that until 2021. i live like 20 mins from there. other parts were filmed at a mansion in Glen Cove which is like a half hr from there.

But you never answered how they made her look like she was standing on a horse 😂 I always thought about a green ladder or something similar
A well trained horse can definitely be calm enough to let that happen
I thought that portion was real! They could have definitely green screened a way to hold her up- but I know that the horse is trained to be in front of a camera, so it would be tamed enough to let someone stand on it- I'm sure!

I wonder if the clothing just bursting into flames as she throws it from the balcony is in reference to the lyric “so it’s gonna be forever, or it’s gonna go down in flames”. It is funny how it’s not on fire until after she throws it, but with all the attention put into the details of Taylor’s music videos, I can’t help but think there’s a reason for it. ☺️ Loving your reaction videos!

I love that she uses all the cutesy romcom cliches in the first half of the video. Dancing, running through the gardens in pretty dresses, riding white horses together, heart candy, even the quirky bike ride inside… and then she drops the bomb.

Yes! This is one of my favorites!! A few fun facts!! The tree carving, the end of the golf club, crumbling wall and car class are all vfx!!! But she actually stood on a horse!

This was shot in a hotel which you can of course stay in and its actual not that expensive.
Well the outside scenes were shot at a hotel not sure about the inside
Actually, they used 2 different places, they were originally Mansions, and one of them got sold afterward.

Fabrizio Salerno who is a reactor, when he first saw the Blank Space MV, he recognized the mansion, he said he went there with his class when he was in high school, he showed pictures, but it wasn't a hotel at the time.

I bet you the horses in her bedroom were filmed separately, probably in front of a greenscreen, then added into the shots via VFX. She had that kind of budget for such effects.
That deer is probably stuffed, with an animatronic head.
It's quite possible the spinning apple effect was done on-location in-camera, with any hint of the fishing line cleaned up in post.
The sports car used (especially for the smashing) is almost certainly an AC Cobra replica, easy to acquire and not too expensive, so her trashing the hood of it with the golf club was probably real, then enhanced with CGI and practical effects. The headlight smashing was probably CGI'd for safety reasons (no flying shards of glass) and possibly to achieve the best possible "break."
I agree with you about the "burning" clothes she tosses from the balcony. The fire doesn't begin naturally. If the clothes were meant to burn, the filmmakers resorted to CGI for obvious safety reasons. Or they later decided to add the flames to make the footage more dramatic.

Nope, the scenes around the 3:50 cut were different as you can see by the shape of the chairs and windows - but you do have a very good point about the similarity being jarring once it's pointed out.
14:23 you can clearly see the light lense had been smashed, which should have been spotted earlier, and the damage to the body-work is consistent for an alloy bodied Cobra - and even an alloy bodied "copy" is a VERY expensive car!
At the end, he's begging her to take him back.

Fun fact: she never hits the car. I read the director used a prop she was holding on to and the actual golf stick was added later along with the proper destruction of that beautiful car. I know, it hurts to watch that's why I did my research. 😂

(I say this because I have a postviral disability from overdoing it while sick, and I don’t want that to happen to anyone else.))
On to the actual video! The sequence of match cuts with the apple is my favorite part of the music video even though other stuff is probably more impressive. Love him spitting out the poisoned apple.
