    Vitiligo affects all races, however it is more noticeable with darker skin tones. The reason there is little research is mostly likely because it isn't life-threatening and it's not a very common condition.

    I was invited for a study on eczema from a renowned dermatologist in my country. When I entered the room she immediately apologised herself. They only looked at my name and assumed I was Caucasian. What she explained was that they only perform studies on the effects on Caucasian skin, as dark skin is much thicker. Because of this, few research is conducted on dark skin. So sad, as I’ve had eczema my whole life and I’ve never seen progress in the dermatology field on my condition.

    They also have issues with things like vitiligo (my grandmother, I’m Indian, is an example).

    Sounds like a field of study that _Black_ people should be exploring. Will never understand why Blacks have this attitude. The one about them not being able to find their makeup in the shades that complement their skin tone really pissed me off. The answer is simple, go to school, get a degree, start formulating products that work for your skin. Build something by your hands, for your brothers and sisters, inspire them and become leaders of your people instead of looking for someone else to do it for you.

      If I had to personally learn everything that’s different or specific to black people for every aspect of my life I’d have no life. The same could be said for gender-specific and age-specific issues then. But if you’re a professional you need to ensure your services pertain to everybody. Imagine going to a hospital and the doctors being unable to treat you because they only studied health pertaining to just teenagers. There is a reason when the study general medicine relevant to everybody before specialization. Although from your referring to Black people as “the blacks” I already know you see black people as an “other”.

    • @freethegreat
      @freethegreat 3 года назад

      It is not that simple.. education, and access to it is just being truly opened up. Also, the conversation is about the lack of representation and consideration when it comes to black skin care. The idea that our skin will react to products designed for white skin. We already have our doctors now, doesnt lessen the need for the conversation.

  • @gabisky5995

    Would it be acceptable if a white woman said she only wanted white dermatologists to touch her skin? No.
    Are these conditions exclusive to black people? Eczema? Dry skin? Oily skin? Vitiligo? No.
    Would you tell a doctor that has never had a brain tumour that they can’t know how to cure it? No.
    So why are you saying that all white dermatologists can’t treat black skin?
    Your previous dermatologists were racist, yes. But generalizing that all white dermatologists can’t learn how to treat black skin is in fact racist.
    It is understandable that people have racist dermatologists in the USA, but that doesn’t make it acceptable to be racist yourself. Yes, black people can be racist, just like women can be sexist. Dermatologists in the USA can have a better formation to specify for skin colours, but the skin colour of your dermatologists do not correlate with their ability to treat the same skin colour as theirs since there is so many variations of skin types between people.
    It is imperative to have equality and respect for all humans without consideration of their skin colour. Please don’t say things that contradict your principles. Please be careful no to do what you accuse people of doing.

    • @Happy_days01
      @Happy_days01 2 года назад +11

      It's not racist. I am not black but I am tanned (polynesian) You need to realise the medical industry and health care system as a whole is bias to Europeans as those were the people they treated for a long time.
      It doesn't just happen once but ALOT. Many people face this issue, natives around the world, obese people, even women.
      Many times fat people are overlooked as doctor's assume their weight is behind their issue when in fact they have actual untreated diseases and is ignored due to a fat bias.
      In my case I am native and the majority of our country is white people. I have a low immune system and so do my other family members. Whenever I go to a doctor's they will tell me I am too small, have multiple deficiencies etc. How can you say that when the statistics is based on a race where the genetics are different to yours?
      Black people have the right to ask for a black doctor because as the video says, a majority of dermatologists are white. White people do not have to worry about having a white dermatologist as the majority are and there already enough information and research about white skin.
      No one is saying these conditions are exclusive to white people, we are saying the entire way darker skin works is completely different hense you need someone who know about black skin to look at it.
      Would you go to a neurosurgeon for a heart transplant? No. Would you ask a midwife to fix your arm? No. If you're a women do you have the right to ask for a female doctor if the issue is personal or to make you feel more comfortable? Yes.
      Black people also deserve to be treated by a dermatologist that makes them feel comfortable. Your comment was completely insensitive to "black people" and is proof of the ignorance white people have in the medical field. It's not racism, we are all different and have different genetics, black people are not white people, you can not pretend that doesn't exist.

      You’re taking his words completely out of context, and you’re contradicting yourself. Just like what he said.
      White people do get these diseases. They just affect black people more than white people, with exception to a few diseases out there. It isn’t because of Europe’s white bias doctors. It’s because a small percentage of people actually get these diseases, and an even smaller percentage of those people are black. So it’s just not a problem that has been looked into enough.

My grandfather also had the same spots on some parts of his body, however I was too young to give it much thought then, I know now that it’s hereditary because of other members of my family is also getting them or already have it. I believe that it’s very little a dermatologist can do or a skin cream to help. Vitiligo is real and we just have to live with it, there’s no cure as I’m told.

    Regarding being a money-making vehicle for dermatologists, I had one (white, cis-male) who tried to get me to take an internal medication that 1) I did not need (there was no indication for it) and 2) gave me awful side-effects. When I informed his nurse (Black, cis-woman) of the side effects, she told me to keep taking the medication. I was/am sure they were getting kickbacks from the drug company that manufactures that medication. That's when I found a new dermatologist with a quickness.

    Does anyone remember Dr. Katherine Treherne formally of Hampton, VA?? She was a beautiful Dermatologist of color that Cured Vitiligo back in the 80's early 90's I was a patient of hers. She cured my Vitilago... she was world renown and later died mysteriously (though they say cancer - that's an easy excuse but not accurate) The best of the best Professionals of Color are usually killed if they refuse to sell out, (like Dr. Sebi) please remember that!!! DR. KATHERINE TREHERNE TREATED AND CURED VITILIGO IN THE 1980's!!!

    I am all for more comprehensive skin care training in dermatologists which better adresses the needs of different skin types, but in a world where more people are of mixed heritages than purely italian, mexican, african, east asian or northern european I am not comfortable with a narrative that promotes further segregation.

    • @allthewayupnorth_8155
      @allthewayupnorth_8155 4 года назад +4

      Further segregation? Who cares what you're comfortable with. Why is it a problem for black people to want to be treated by professionals that look like them. A white person will choose A doctor that looks like them first. A fact is a fact. There are medical issues that are specific to black people. Our bodies, skin, etc are different than other people. If you're mixed with black, you're black. African is the dominate gene. Period. Get over it. We are different and should be treated as such. The type of breast cancer that rapidly effects black women is only seen in black women. You have medical doctors that still believe that back people have a higher pain tolerance than other groups of people. Black women are dying in child birth at a overwhelming rate than white women. Check yourself and go read.
