    I used to wear one, then met a new coworker who lost part of his chin and face after he crashed wearing one. Now I wear a full face every time even in the Florida heat.

    The rigidity of the shell might actually be a huge safety issue, most helmets shells are specifically designed to crack or crackle to disperse impact. If the shell doesn't do either of those things it is not dispersing any impact force, and is instead sending it straight to the liner(and possibly your head). This is why the best performing helmets are usually made of things like carbon fiber and kevlar, which disperse energy across a wide area by crackling. Also 4LBS for a half-helmet is insane, that's a huge risk when it comes to oblique impacts too.

      Glad I read this. I'm no physics major but this thought was kind of running through my mind I just didn't have the words for it. The weight concerns me also. If we were building a submersible on the other hand...

    • @toddkehley2932

      The cracking of the shell of a foam helmet results in areas where the helmet can gain traction on roadway surfaces, your bike or anything else in the area causing head rotation and neck injury. A shell that does not crack does not provide this hazard. It allows energy to be deflected away from the head instead of inviting it in. The fluid contained inside distributes energy around the head as it flows within the liner. The weight of the helmet keeps it in place on the head and does not shift around causing constant readjustment. Once you are riding the KIRSH Helmet, it feels like you are wearing no helmet. I realize that this is hard to believe when you are told throughout the 70+ years of foam helmets that lighter is better. There's a reason why the company says that the proof is in the ride.

    Thank you Cue for the shoutout, I appreciate it.
    I've never seen that helmet before and I'm assuming the bulk of the weight is from the gel liner? Pretty fascinating design. As always. I enjoy your content and keep uo the great work. Eric

    Our club use the use these helmets but we all started to get neck pains after long rides due to the weight all up rather than distributed around , so we stop using them. Most of us have switched to modular helmets now due to the added protection on long rides like you we keep a small helmet in our tour pack. Btw the test they do is useless if a truck runs over your head the way they demonstrate you would be dead , they should do a impact test on a object hitting the helmet simulating a fall.
    Well keep up the great job .

      I definitely don't want my head run over by an F250! The Kirsh helmet is actually a bit lighter than my modular from Shoei. Definitely feels heavy in the hand, but it feels ok when I wear it. I'll try it on a long distance ride

    You have an XL, I'm curious what fitted baseball cap size do you wear? I like my caps loose so I get a 7 5/8 which I'm guessing 7 1/2 would be my circumference. Does the kirsh fit true to size or is my baseball cap size a reliable comparison? My measurements put me in a medium but my baseball cap size preference would put me in a large. Thoughts? Thanks

      I have an enormous head! My preferred fitted baseball cap size is 7-7/8. The Kirsh fits comfortably on my head....no pinch points. The only drawback is the weight. It's a trade off. Weight vs comfort.

I generally grab the one that's closest when I go riding. On my last long distance trip I took the Kirsh. I also used the Kirsh in an all-day motorcycle class. I can't say that I have a preference

    Okay for all of those folks wearing half helmets, I guess it fulfills State regulations however they are best if not worn and kept on your shelf. Should wear a full face or at a minimum a modular. Col. Alan West found out that without a full face helmet your chin and cheek meet the pavement sandpaper. But of course you are the boss of your brain.

    Am I wrong for wearing a German style helmet as a black rider?

    • @RidingandWrenching
      @RidingandWrenching  10 месяцев назад

      That sounds like a great topic for a video. My short answer is no. My reason is that is not as easy as you think to nail down what "German style" actually means. Beyond that, if we are unwilling to move on from the past, you'd have to ask if black people should ride Harley Davidson motorcycles.

    Helmets are safety gear. Style should be the last concern. Half helmets aren't as safe as full helmets. If you should fall off at speed the last thing you want is your face scraping the pavement at 60-mph...

    • @RidingandWrenching
      @RidingandWrenching  11 месяцев назад

      I'm pretty sure I never said style was my first concern. However, I agree, full face helmets are safer. Riding in a car is safer than being on a motorcycle. Walking is safer than riding in a car.
      Everyone chooses the risks the risks they are willing to take. There is a large portion of the riding community that doesn't wear any helmet. A half helmet is better than no helmet.

    • @garymaclean6903
      @garymaclean6903 11 месяцев назад

      @@RidingandWrenching My point was if helmets are safety gear, what's the point of choosing one that effectively protects half your head? Many fatal M/C accidents involve head injuries, typically from striking the road or another vehicle. I understand how people are free to choose what little protection they want. I just don't understand if motorcycling is as dangerous as we both agree, how an obviously substandard choice would be their first choice, when better protection is sitting on the store shelf...
      And yes, far too many riders are more concerned with how 'cool' they look, than other far more important concerns.
