    This is a great documentary! I just happened on this in performing a search on Daito Ryu. Its interesting to see Chiba Sensei's knowledge from an historical view, on his journey in Daito Ryu. Thank you for sharing your experience. I am looking forward to the next installments.

    I was a student of okomoto Sensei. He was kodo horikawas Student. Daito ryu aiki ju jitsu. Kodo was sokaku student. Classmate with ueshiba, shioda Gozo, etc. there is still a school in Tokyo although okomoto has passed on.

    Now that the talk is about old men, I get reminded that Japan has given birth to one of the longest living humans in history (If not the oldest) Shigechio Izumi who was 120 years old when he died. He lived from 1865 to 1985. What a record. Makes one wonder about what it essentially is that makes a person able to live that long.....Vegetables?

    Is there any way that they could get a translator to decipher the Aizu characters? Isn't it important to pass this information down?

    what is the connection with aikido? is it a combination of aikido and jujutsu??

    • @guillaumeerard
      @guillaumeerard  7 лет назад +4

      Ueshiba Morihei, the founder of Aikido learned Daito-ryu Aiki-jujutsu and he selected a few techniques from its extensive curriculum to form Aikido.

      oh!! wow !! this is how O SENSEI developed Aikido!! so it is definitely an older martial art than aikido!

    The documentary is very good, and it shows a lot of things. Yet he is very brutal with his students which I don't really like.
    I get the part where a bit of strength shows the better application of the form, but crossing that line becomes something else.
    He has a lot to show to others, but the aggressiveness is the part I don't like.

      Brutal? That's not brutal - it is just powerful - in an old school way. Remember that this is not Aikido ( it would indeed be brutal by Aikido standards.) However I did have the opportunity to do some training with Gozo Shioda back in the day. And he hit hard before throwing or locking. I think what it is is the old school trained for real life whilst the modern schools train for a spiritual and health benefit. Which is nice but not conducive to genuine combat ability.

      @Jim Hane Indeed. Fully agree. I always thought that I would feel very sorry for the misguided person who attempted an assault on Shioda Sensei :) Would have been fun to watch however.. Having had hands on with him. Scary levels of power, focus, speed and true martial ability.
