    'Americans try a weird selection of Singaporean food that no Singaporeans eat'
    ( except satay, satay is awesome :D)

    @UMeAndHara 10 лет назад +843

    Haha I am sorry buzzfeed but you could have picked better Singaporean food. Everything before the satay are not really what Singaporeans eat.
    So excited when I saw the title but disappointed at the food choices. But at least you guys picked satay!

    • @MaxGreyluther
      @MaxGreyluther 10 лет назад +61

      Satay is pretty much South Asian food, not authentic Singaporean food. We have satay in Thailand, Indonesian, Malaysian, etc.

    • @bhavna5325

    As a Singaporean, I think there are better food than those snacks used in the video, apart for the satay and you have to eat with the ketupat. I reckon there isnt much choices in States.

      I would have loved to see them eat some Chicken Rice, Kaya Butter Toast, and maybe Teh Tarik and other drinks you'd expect from a Singaporean coffee shop.

    I'm Singaporean, I suggest you try out these foods:
    Laksa ( Thick Rice Noodles in Curry like soup)
    Chicken Rice ( The rice tastes like chicken, I'm sure you'll be amazed by what it tastes like)
    Chili Crab ( the holy grail, this is sooo good, can't get enough of this!)
    This few are quite popular in SG, Singaporeans, I want you to comment below the best Laksa/Chicken Rice/ Chili Crab you can find!

    1.Red melons seed is eaten on the new year as like a snack
    2.Thanks for the sauce compliment
    3.There is no such thing as a street food here in singapore (unless you consider china town, which is only legal there)
    4.Finally! No hate shit about my country!
    FYI, Singapore is a multi racial country (that means we have food from everywhere and anywhere)

    • @joes.6448
      @joes.6448 10 лет назад +1

      I think you mean "multi-racial" or "multi-ethnicity," multi-rational doesn't really mean anything. But you're right, your part of the World has many different rich cultures and heritages that all provide their own flavor.Plus, I don't know if I've ever had ANY Asian food I didn't like. Then again, I hit the Asian grocery at least once a month and I snack on dried cuttlefish. I'm a weird American.

      Honestly, just because you have food from everywhere and anywhere doesn't make it Singaporean. You can get pizza in Malaysia, but no one classifies it as Malaysian food.

    Those aren't Singaporean food, those are just chips/cookies from

    malaysia and singapore basically share the same foods. malaysian go to singapore to eat hainan chicken rice and they often come here to eat nasi lemak and laksa. other than that, singlish and manglish are basically the same Rojak language. we speak the same language anyway. we're the same country until the separation. and this both country share alot of similarities to indonesian cuisine when it comes to savoury. instead of just mentioning 'Singapore', you could mention Malaysia too.

      melon seeds are mostly consumed by the older generation (pioneer batch). Its meant as a past time snack plus it gives the person something to do with their hands and mouth. Remember in the olden times, there was only 2 tv channels that broadcast for like 6-8hrs a day and 4 radio stations (a station for each major language). Most people don't have much to entertain themselves with, so eating melon seeds kills time plus its inexpensive.

    For all those saying that the foods originated from their country, I'm pretty sure the countries use different spices and stuff to make the dishes different or more unique. Just like how there's Singaporean curry, and Indian curry, and Thai curry. They don't sure don't taste the same, but they're sort of the same dish. There's also the Singaporean Laksa, and laksa from other countries, yes? So stfu and stop trying to take ownership of a dish that other countries perfected when yours couldn't.

      instead of the notion that drives them to thinking that "just because the food originates from their country: it's theirs', I believe it may innately be more of a political connotation that drives them to such arguments. Like the whole thing with satay, where the Indonesian street food culture is actually highly politicised (obviously, for tourism revenue) and satay happens to be one of the main attraction - and seeing this video indirectly claim it as Singaporean - no surprise over the apparent backlash.

    • @faithlim3158
      @faithlim3158 8 лет назад

      Yeah, and Singapore is made up from people from all over the world, so of course, the main idea of the food will originate from some where else.

    They should have tried chilli crab which Singapore seems to be famous for. As someone who has visited Singapore several times the best three things about Singapore in my opinion, apart from the food are: 1. Changi Airport, Singapore's international airport is by far the best airport in the whole world. Clean, modern, very easy to get from one part of the airport to another and so many things to see and do that the airport is almost a tourist attraction unto itself. 2. Singapore Airlines, easily one of the world's finest airlines and far superior in food, service and comfort than any airline in the USA and better than many European airlines. 3. Mustafa Centre, a very big department store where you can buy just about anything and it is open 24hrs!

My parents love pumpkin or pistachios for the lunar new year and also in Chinese 'bah kuah' it's like a roasted pork meat and it's kinda pricey for us but realllllllllyyyyyyy delicious! (We only buy these roasted pork slices/meat during the lunar new year because it's pricey for the poor to normal economic people ,unless you are rich and you love it so much but it is unhealthy if you eat too much )You Gotta try it out! Aw
    You could eat some better ones XD
    Like
    Why no Prata?
    Chicken rice, Chili crab, maybe Tom Yam?
    Oh oh
    and Ice Kachang! Would Kaya toast even be considered? Like the Kaya toast with the eggs?
    What is that snack... Sweet peanut snack? Hwa sen tang?
    And if its all just snacks then the White Rabbit sweets
    Mamee (god I hope they actually USE the seasoning)
    Also guys, guys
    You say the food all come from all the different countries
    I get that but if that was the case there'd be like nothing to be under Singapore's name.
    If the recipe was brought over from the original country and in Singapore so long, it would have changed bit by bit. I'd like to call what is in Singapore here and now Singaporean food, unless it's those shops that are like "Imported from [insert country here]"

    Satay is not from Singapore... Duhhh... Satay marinated with spices and herbs, served with peanut gravy, that's Malaysian satay.
    Indonesian satay like satay padang is different. The meat is not marinated and the gravy is so delicious and spicy. Its not peanut gravy.
    Singapore claims they own satay, that's absurd.

    Please correct me if I'm wrong.
    Would any of these be considered as Singaporean? They're all from different countries.
    Haw Flakes and the seeds are from China, Squid Chips are popular all over Asia,
    And Satay is general South East Asian, but originally from Indonesia.
    I get that Singapore is a melting-pot of different cultures, but I don't think anything in this video is "Singaporean food". Maybe they should have tried other foods that are uniquely Singaporean, food you can only find in Singaporean cuisine and no where else. That would have been far more interesting.
