      It's different. Panda Express is imitation Chinese food where as McDonald's is just what it is.
      People go into McDonald's and know what they're getting but there are a lot of people who think that Panda Express is genuine Chinese.
      Chinese food from a local Chinese shop is about 1000 times better than Panda's garbage where I live.

      Anyone who legitimately loves Chinese Food frequents a local Chinese Takeout usually run by Chinese Immigrants. I frequent a Chinese Restaurant just about every day from my work usually buying about 20 bucks of food (I'm a lifeguard calorie intake is high) but I still visit Panda Express not because I believe it is Chinese because I believe it is Chinese Fast Food. (They have a drive thru at all the locations in my town they are a Fast Food Restaurant). I don't think I know one person who goes to Panda Express who thinks it is real Chinese.

      William Pickens Yeah. Panda Express literally hires anyone, I almost worked there until I got a better job offer from Safeway and the coworkers I was meeting were absolutely terrible.

      i doubt they would think it was authentic chinese, panda express is acceptable food, but by no means great food. Our parents and grandparents grew up in China where food was scarce so they ate everything without waste, our generation had the luxury of always having food and thus became picky and spoiled. Also, the older generation never actually said that it was authentic, just good to them

  • @justinv8668

    I swear the younger ones are just extremely picky and calling it off just because it's not from China or Authentic. Food that's not authentic does not equate to it tasting bad. The older people seemed to like it and they've probably had much more experience with Chinese cuisine, therefore, I believe their opinions hold much more credibility than these brats.

      Jacob Haines Sorry, I may have not made my point too clear. I was not implying that non authentic food tastes better than authentic - because it probably doesn't. It's because younger people are less secure with their culture so they want to assert that they are actively a part of their culture and know things about it, while the older people are very secure with the fact that they're Chinese, like they don't need to let anyone know, they just are. Which makes them more open to trying new things because they see it as a compliment to their culture that we tried to make their food instead of an insult.

Younger people tend to be more RUDE so even if it's not bad they will harshly criticize the Food if doesn't taste *'exactly'* like what they are used to. • @jessicatang5986

      The elders are right. The younger ones are just trying to be cool and think that they are gonna be served authentic chinese food. You can't expect that from a chinese resturant in America. The elders had that in mind and even if they didn't like it they were still respectful, I mean I don't think that the younger ones would be able to tell the difference if they put authentic food on one plate and Panda Express food on the other.
      The girl on the left said that the chow mian was good but when she heard the other kids opinion she immediately became insecure.

So they're actually saying really just that they think chow mein from China is probably like this, given that they aren't from there

Better yet, they have never tried the real deal, only ate what they mother would cook or dines in a high-class Chinese banquet then compares their 'exquisite taste' to Panda Express.

      yeah. I know Asian people who grew up with authentic Asian food... and eat the real stuff 2-3 times a day..
      yet they still sometimes order Western Chinese take out. they still enjoy kung pao chicken, general tso's chicken, egg rolls, orange chicken, etc etc.
      sometimes you just get tired of the authentic stuff and go for the westernized stuff lol..
      same thing with Latinos... I know a few guys/gals who occasionally go for Taco Bell or Tex Mex Burritos.

Several of my Chinese friends found that the more unkept the washroom was, the better the taste of their food. And I'm referring to restaurants in Toronto's main China Town district and not the fast food chains of Chinese food. The survey results confirm what my friend and I observed with the exception of one coworker.

    The thing about Chinese food is that it's all freestyle, which is why I'm not surprised that the elders were a little more open to the Americanized versions of it. In China, a dish with the same name could be entirely different in two different places - and they're used to it. It's an improvisational food, using a wide variety of ingredients available at each location to try and produce whatever tastes best. The kids, who did not grow up with that mentality, would therefore be more inclined to define one specific taste as "Fried Rice" and to dislike anything deviating from that taste. That's a very western approach to recipes.

    • @leightkd9311
      @leightkd9311 9 лет назад +39

      Headrock That would make sense. Because they are living over here eating their parents cooking (who might've grown up over there) and only their parents cooking, most likely. They don't have much of a chance to experience different styles, I would think?

    • @headrockbeats
      @headrockbeats 9 лет назад +89

      Leigh Tkd
      Hmmm might be, but I think it's more to do with the fact that American food (well, western food in general) is much more uniform, and that includes Chinese food in America. For example, Sweet & Sour Chicken would taste roughly the same anywhere you eat it in America, especially if you always eat it from the same chain store. In China, it could very well taste pretty different in two restaurants _within the same city_. And that's considered _normal_.
      Westerners love putting foods into easily-recognizable categories, and even sub-dividing categories when two similar foods diverge in taste or ingredients from one another, even a little. That's why, for example, there are so many names for different kinds of pizza (neapolitan style, sicilian style, roman style, new york style, deep dish, pizza bianca, and so on), when it's all basically cheese on bread. In a Chinese restaurant in China, the menu will rarely specify any details about a dish - it will call out a generalized name, and let the customer decide whether they trust the cook to make it taste good (also, photographs of the food are very very common, to give customers an idea of what they're going to get). There are also many restaurants (especially in rural areas) where there is no menu at all - you pick the ingredients yourself from a display shelf, and the cook tries to make whatever you picked taste good.
      It's an improvisational approach to foods, that makes people much more open to dishes that are very different from one place to the next. The kids would not have that kind of approach.

You could get it in a bagel, or with a side of mustard and relish, or maybe it's ostrich meat... There would be riots!!

    The elder gentleman who liked everything reminds me of my grandmother. During the 1920s, she was one of the six children of a Polish immigrant (who ended up in Chicago City Jail, where he died), she had a lot less to eat than she needed or wanted. She says that her family licked the plates until they were clean. In comparison, the Great Depression were good times.
    I wonder if the elder gentleman remembered similar times. If he was in the PRC, then he might have lived through the Great Leap Forward and the famines. Hunger makes the best sauce as do memories of it -- by definition everything that is edible tastes good if you endured real, bone-gnawing hunger.

Depending on the Mexican house hold they know were the meat comes from, because sometimes they are the ones who cut the animals themselves. The meat is cooked almost burnt, but not all the way. Panda Express is a cultural mirror on how the youngsters perceive themselves: Chinese, but Americanized. Whether they are aware of it or not, they feel shame because it hits too close too home. Like Panda Express, they are Chinese, but not quite. To compensate, they overcorrect their reactions to make themselves paragons of Chinese culture, gatekeepers of what is, or what is not authentic. But by doing so, they betray their own motives, because they fail to recognize their own insecurities and at this time of filming, have not yet made peace with it.

      I always thought us Asians grew up eating our parents' authentic cooking, but I have to agree with you. These kids seem like they didn't and need to get of their high horses.

    The younger generations always have something bad to say about the authenticity of their food. But the older generations gladly eat the food and call it tasty even if it's not as "authentic".

      Michelle YG the older people are nicer because they probably know how it feels to be poor I know how it feels like so that’s why I’m grate full and why they are too the young people don’t because the parents wouldn’t let me find out or got more money

      The older ones are the only ones being honest. The food tastes good. The younger ones seem to just want to ignore the fact that the food is tasty and just blindly say anything that is not authentic is crap. It is like they feel like they have to prove that they are "really Chinese".

      Michelle YG and if they did not like the food they would express their opinion in a nice way

    I love how the American Chinese teens are like "this is not authentic at all, this is gross." While the older people literally from China are like "This is very similar to how we make it, this is pretty good."
