I love your positive attitude. You are inspiring to say the least. I also think it’s clear that you love what you do because you don’t mind the hassles that this kind of photography bring your way. I don’t hate the police for doing their job and I hope people don’t make it a race thing, but it’s always nerve racking getting stopped. Ever since 9/11 people taking pictures of public spaces and any unusual activity will create suspicion. I love street photography but i’m so bad at staying stealthy because i’m so self conscious. I like your style of photography and the glow of the lights at night make it worth the hassle. Feel better and stay safe my man. Godspeed.
LOVE the mechanical shutter with the film wind sound over the photos, it brings me back! I also appreciate someone who can say "you know what I actually didn't the love the photos I took but I had a great time" which is an attitude more photography youtubers should have. Unless it's your sole source of income, if you aren't having a good time what's the point?
I shoot night photography downtown Chicago quite a bit, and love it. Just stumbled across your channel while searching for more vintage glass. I've been shooting with the Nikkor 28mm 2.8 ais and the 105mm 2.5 ais for some years now. Love your content and will subscribe, keep up the good work.

He was strung out on drugs and I could barely understand him. But I made out just enough of what he was saying to reply and seem uninteresting so he would keep on walking and leave us alone hahaha
i just found your channel via this video and i watched the whole thing with a big smile on my face! love your personality! the nights shots were really beautiful, i personally have only tried once at night in germany because im actually too scared to take them at night lol (im from london) but when im in another city or with someone else i'll hopefully get another chance! stay safe! cant wait to watch the rest of your content

Hey Wale, came across your channel recently and loving the content man. Honestly been wanting to do a similar thing for a while now ahah (pov streets, or recording of shoots / when I'm out and about in general) and you inspired me to just go and get started. I can relate to that interaction you had at @ 3:48 as it's happened to me once too, literally a police van doing a nightly patrol went out of their way and parked their car to stop and ask me what I was up to, looked me up on the system, asked me where I lived, etc. I think as the conversation went on they realised there's really nothing possibly malicious I could be doing by taking a photo of a phone booth ahah (didn't help that I had the tripod set up and all and I guess in the dark it looks a bit suspicious). Apparently they were called in by some people living in apartments a block away so they must have seen me through the window, but everything turned out alright. They went on their way and let me do my thing. Also have had other strange encounters but that's a story for another time, keep doing what you do man! You seem super chill, I hope one day I can tag along for some streetshots.

Olawale, I enjoy your comments and observations about night photography. I mainly shoot desert landscape photos during the day but have decided to shift more time and energy into night photography. My first foray this year was a complete disaster. I had wanted to capture the neon lights around the local In N Out Burger in Phoenix but ended up capturing what I perceived to be a pop drug market. Not what I wanted or expected. I followed up a couple of weeks later and someone threw something all over my car. Next time, I will find another In N Out Burger. The shots did not turn out as intended since I was using 50mm lens, not a 12mm one.
I'm a (casual) photographer from Chicago and I gotta say this video hit close to me. For years I could just go and shoot in Chicago but lately I've been concerned by the high spike in violence in the city. Great video man!

Try to switch off stabilization when using a tripod and try manual focus. This could help a lot But it's a pain in the ass to peacefully do photography in the US as a black person ( by night) 😅 I don't have this kind of issue so far. But thanks for your energy. Again... IOS off and manual focusing if using a tripod by night 🌙
I would love to do night photography but I live in the suburbs and there aren't a whole lot of interesting subjects. And I'm definitely not trying to get harassed by the police. But I get it, the potential imagery one can capture is very compelling. Stay safe out there my Bro!

This seems like photography in general. I guess it depends on where one is or maybe I’m doing something wrong, but I too feel like a magnet for cops or security when doing various types of photography. 😂 People can’t take pictures anymore?
This is why it helps to know the experience of Black artist because it is the exact opposite experience of the White photographers that I have viewed, follow, or know in real life. I am Black and photographer but I rarely do night time photography because of irrational White fear and how that comes out in their policing. What crime could you have been committing on the corner with your obvious camera and tripod set up? Why are you being questioned? It isn’t illegal to be out at night, to be on that corner, or to be taking a photograph. It’s pure anti-Blackness born from irrational fear and a projection of their own aggression and long time history of violence placed on to us and our bodies. I hate what we have to deal with and that every aspect of our lives has to have fear connected to it for that reason. Frustrating.
What pisses me off about the cop encounter is the nerve of him advising you on how to take better photos. You're the photographer in that situation, you're the only judge of whether you're shooting what you want to shoot and if what you're shooting is better now or later. I understand him asking you what you're doing, but as soon as you said you're taking photos and he can plainly see your camera and tripod, he should have driven along with a friendly "Have fun."
