Genocidal, warmongering Britain is arguably the most evil nation/union/kingdom in the history of the world. BRITAIN HAS COMMITTED GENOCIDES ACROSS FIVE CONTINENTS (from neighbouring Ireland in Europe to North America to Africa to Asia to Oceania), a fact they shamelessly continue to deny.
Britain has commited so many crimes against humanity (and crimes against the planet), it would take several volumes of books to explain their countless acts of cruelty.
Britain (and it's predecessor state) has committed multiple genocides in neighbouring Ireland, from the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland to the Great Irish famine/genocide to the murdering and torturing of Irish Republicans by the Black and Tans to murdering innocent civilians in the Dublin Monaghan bombings and the civilians gunned down in two Bloody Sundays in Ireland (google all of it).
Britain was the second largest enslaver in the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, a trade which resulted in the deaths of millions of African slaves as they were treated like cattle and worked to near death. Britain abolished slavery after paying reparations not to the slaves but to the slave owners!!!. Britain continued with slavery in another name with indentured labour, where the plight of the labourers was no better than that of the slaves. Britain maintained concentration camps in the Boer War where tens of thousands of men, women and children perished (google 'Boer war concentration camp'). Britain committed genocide in the 1950s in Kenya (google 'Caroline Elkins Imperial Reckoning'). In addition to committing slavery and genocide in Africa, Britain looted the resources of several African countries and stole away countless valuable artefacts, artefacts which the British Museum shamelessly continues to possess.
During their rule in India, Britain siphoned off 45 trillions dollars in today's money (watch the VICE video on it). Hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of Indian rebels were tortured and murdered in the aftermath of the 1857 war of independence (entire rebel towns were 'cleansed'). Tens of millions of Indians starved to death during the dozens of famines as the inhumane British rulers looked away. In modern day Sri Lanka, in the aftermath of the Uva rebellion, the entire male population was put to death (google 'Uva rebellion'). The Bengal Famine of 1943 was genocide committed by a genocidal racist bastard called Winston Churchill (google 'Madhushree Mukherjee Churchill's Secret War'). The British murdered countless innocent civilians in massacres like Jallianwala Bagh massacre, Quissa Khwani Bazaar massacre, Pathorughat Massacre (google them all; these are the ones we know of, imagine the countless massacres Britain destroyed all records of). British forces murdered tens of thousands of Indians during the Quit India movement. In China, Britain fought the Opium Wars. Britain also used 'divide and rule' to turn different groups against each other. Btw, all the railways, ports, infrastructure Britain built in India were to help them transport the resources it stole.
Britain committed genocide in North America (google 'small pox infected blanket).
Britain committed genocide in Oceania (google 'British genocide in Australia').
If you thought that was all in the distant past, think of the Iraq War in 2003 twenty years ago where the UK illegally invaded and killed thousands of Iraqis. Also think of the bombing of Libya by British warplanes, the funding of Al Nusra by Britain (google 'Britain Al Nusra').
Britain is a shameless, genocidal, warmongering nation that continues to deny, deflect and obfuscate it's countless crimes against humanity.

The crimes which Britain committed in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh (in British India) as a colonial power are immeasurable. Colonialism was the worst sort of aggression. An aggressor should be penalized like Germany and Japan? German and Japanese aggression was for a short period of time but British aggression was enormously long, terribly painful and disgusting in all respects. Apology is a tiny word. REPRISALS.

Britain came to trade and then invested huge sums. The British created an Indian coal industry from nothing, a valuable natural resource for India. Coal was used to power the railways. Without coal India could not have a modern steel industry. Tata Steel was founded by Indians in 1907 and is now one of the largest steel companies in the world.

"And on the other side of the balance sheet were the immense British investments in Indian infrastructure, irrigation and industry. By the 1880's the British had invested £279 million in India, not much less than one fifth of their entire investment overseas. By 1914 the figure had reached £400 million. The British increased the area of irrigated land by a factor of eight, so that by the end of the Raj a quarter of all land was irrigated, compared with just 5 per cent of it under the Mughals. They created an Indian coal industry from scratch which by 1914 produced nearly 16 million tons a year. They increased the number of jute spindles by a factor of ten". Niall Ferguson, Empire

"The East India Company didn't cause a decline in the economy of India, the reverse is true. . .[and] could never have survived without the collaboration and partnership of thousands of Indian merchants, agents, artisans, bankers, and transporters. The Company was the biggest business firm in the world of its time, and therefore, made many Indians fabulously rich. Some of the most famous entrepreneurs and business families of nineteenth-century India made their money trading with the Company or with European merchants. Palatial homes in the north of Calcutta attest to that wealth. These profits were much larger in scale than the profits the Company sent back to England". Quotation from: The East India Company. The World’s Most Powerful Corporation. Tirthankar Roy, 2012 Penguin Books. Tirthankar Roy, Professor of Economic History, born and educated in India.

"Prior to the Company’s takeover around 1757-65, the strongest military power in India belonged to the Maratha Empire. Just before Company takeover, Maratha forces invaded Bengal, killed and robbed merchants, destroyed crops, and raped women. Merchants fled from this horror to Calcutta, then under the Company’s possession. Certainly, the average Bengali or Marwari merchant of that time would have felt positively about the Company. Similar sentiment prevailed among the Parsis of Bombay and Surat, and the Telugu and Tamil merchants of Madras. The most influential Indians in the port cities like Calcutta, Bombay, and Madras actively welcomed Company’s rule over Indian ones.". As for as a civilizing influence: "the British Raj brought with it from the West certain standards of humanity which Indian society had not yet attained. Early action was taken to suppress female infanticide. After long hesitation and in the teeth of orthodox Hindu opposition, to aid and abet a performance of suttee was declared to be culpable homicide and, if it were involuntary, murder. The gangs of Thugs, who strangled harmless wayfarers in the service of the goddess Kali, were broken up. Human sacrifice, which had lingered on in some primitive hill districts, was stamped out. The slave trade was stifled, the legal status of slavery was abolished, and in 1860 the owning of slaves was finally prohibited". Re-statement and Balance Sheet. Sir Reginald Coupland. 1945

Tharoor why are you not advocating for soft power reparations from British, which Rajiv Malhotra is fighting for. We do not want monetary reparations from British for their colonial crimes, rather they can treat ancient Indian civilizational values and wisdom with respect and equality, rather than narrow racist inferiority. That would suffice for Indians, as we Indians are quite liberal hearted..

Bakwas. Britishers made India as a country. British colonization was one of the best things ever happened. They brought modern education, schools, university, made railways everything. Without Britishers, India wouldn't even exist as a country. In 70 years, the same leaders like Tharoor has turned country into the largest slum of the world. And look where Britishers stayed- The US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand etc all TOP countries. Indians are taught fake history and politicians repeat the same fake history because Indians LOVE to hear that they are always the victims. This is how people rather blame 'outsiders' than asking these same politicians WHY INDIA IS A FAILED COUNTRY IN 70 YEARS WHEN INDIANS ARE RULING IT? It is sad that Britishers left India. It would have been next US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand etc. Free education, free healthcare, cleanliness, rule of law............everything.

    1. Whereas, Indian princes (comprising maharajahs, rajahs, nawabs and others) exploited their own subjects without heed to their troubles, gave no material, financial support and behaved haughtily and nastily (as present day Indian politicians still do) Imperial Britain provided them with pensions, 3 times a day food, clothes and official quarters and behaved with them justly, honesty and decently.
    2. No wonder God wanted that Britishers come and swipe away the barbarous practices of sati (the practice of burning widows on funeral pyres), thugee (the ritualized murder of travellers as a sacrifice to Gods), prevention of cruelty to animals, gang-robbery, primitive gynecology, shunning of lwer castes (Untouchables) by all higher castes and traders, forced marriage before puberty, abolition of Slavery, Female Infanticide which is still a problem in India of 2019 (Bengal Regulation Acts of 1795 and 1804 declared murdering of female infant illegal and thus in 1870; an act was passed for the prohibition of female infanticide.), human sacrifice for good harvest, prevent cruelty to animals not to mention a hundred other big critical things along with the establishing the rule of law. British rule in India brought high standards of sanitation and public health, modern communications, the protection of minorities such as the Untouchables and Muslims from majority Hindu domination and balancing the interests of India’s numerous and competing religions and regions. Southern India's devadasi system, which 'dedicates' girls to a life of sex work in the name of religion, continues inspite of British opposition to it and despite being made illegal in 1988. In fact, under the BJP, India's capital of Delhi is a political as well as a rape capital (government statistics of 2018 prove it) and women fear to go out in Delhi and several Northern sates alone after 2000 hours.
    3. India of 2019 is still similar to when in the 1800's William Wilberforce and Charles Grant said in a report, ‘the Indian Society is full of superstition, idolatry and tyranny of the priests’.
Now wonder BJP won now under Modi-Shah in the name of Hindutva.
    4. Shashi Tharoor's knowledge is limited. Significantly, the British Army also protected northern India from Turks, Persians, Afghan (Afridi, Talib etc.) tribes and the Russians, while keeping the peace between Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus, who he thought might massacre each other
. Recollect how Gujarat Sarnath temples and Nalanda in Bihar were destroyed by Turks and Persians! Just remember that India was invaded through the times since the BC's.
    5. Churchill predicted that were the British to leave communal massacres would happen (which is what EXACTLY happened after the British left India in 1947 and communal massacres are frequent in modern India).
    6. Fact: During British Raj, the richest people in India were Indian merchants or princes, not Britons i.e. the rulers. Whereas now in present day India people get into politics to get rich.

ST is eloquent , a politician, can venerate anything or demonize anything by cherry picking! It is an art. Britishers looted yes, but economic damages are reversible , not the religious conversion happened prior to that, which led to partition. What's the price tag for that? Trillion trillion? ST don't credit Britishers for English, but thinks Nehru did it. Nehru could choose English, only because it was already there as a connecting language. Britishers placed the seed, which only grew! Pakistan and Bangla also have English without Nehru! I come from a small village, but our elementary school is now 110 yrs old. Same with college and the Highschool. I don't see many Institutions of that excellence built after the Independence. Those days mass education was not a priority among people. Only few among upper caste would go to school. Charles Wilkins translated the Bhagavad Gita to English and promoted it introducing it in the juidiciary system. Even INC was initiated bt the britishers! Many many leaders were all Oxford educated. Britishers facilitated eductaion. List goes on. Our own orthodoxy was the hindrance for many many reforms, Britishers wanted to introduce! It's a shame we blame Britishers even after 75 yrs of independence. Most importantly, Britishers handed over a united India even with the partition! If not for the Britishers Pakistan would have been much bigger with a smaller India next to it, or may be like Iran, an Islamic country! Yes, Marathas expanded briefly, but lost in the 3rd panipat battle, Tippu and Nizams were expanding in the south!

Reconquista: Hinduism Do you not understand what is the context here. It is about reparations, which in other words is, related to monetary matters. Hence there was no need to type anything after the jizaya statistic, unless you're a Hindu fanatic. So I'm just going to consider your reply up till the jizaya argument.
Indeed, there were invasions from the far middle east into India like the Ashrafid dynasty and the origins of the Mughal empire. They also looted and plundered into every treasury they got their hands on after waging war against the local kingdoms. However they spent their loot, assimilated in India and adopted to the local culture, unlike what their white European imperial counterparts did, which is loot local rulers of their money through taxes, ancient artifacts, diamonds, precious stones, etc., transfer it to england, sell all of it away at a price six times than its original buy seats in the british parliament and live the rest of their lives as kings. Your argument of the economy reducing from 33% to 25% is invalid. Do you have any proof of that?

Almost 70 years after independence, this guy is still talking about British colonisation. It's about time that India grow-up and forget about the past... and drive it into themselves that "No One Owes them a Living"
Singapore was also once a British colony and only gained its independence in the early 60s, but today they are the envy of the world for their achievements.
OK... Singapore is a very small country, so let's take China with similar levels of progress & development around the 50s & 60s. China GDP had grown from around a few hundred dollars per capita to almost $10K, whilst India's GDP had only risen to around $2K.

Tharoor made his points brilliantly. Wish I have a copy of his book.
One point all of India should keep in mind is that without the experience of colonialism, India would never ever ever ever become a Constitutional Republic. And thanks to Nehru for firming the foundation with Secularism.
Thanks to the British intervention (or interference) that preserved India from being Islamised.
Cultural exchange between Hindus and Muslims? Very selective. How many temples were destroyed should also be mentioned along.
Hinduism has brilliant ideas and accommodative. But it is the height of irrationality to consider animals as gods to be worshipped, such as hanuman, ganesh, cows. Superstition sanitised. Kali.
Female infanticide, child marriage, casteism, prevention of female education.
I am neither Hindu nor Muslim, but on balance if cornered, I would prefer to be in a Hindu community rather than Muslim.🙏
One fly in Tharoor's ointment is that he appeared miffed at the BJP for making triple talaq illegal... it was to empower women by leveling the playing field --- not to punish the men, as Sir T claimed.
Yes, don't legislate what happens in the bedroom between adults. Cricket and English.

Temple desecration under the Muslim rule in India was a continuation of the policy the ruling dynasties pursued in the pre-Islamic period. Hindu kings victorious in battles plundered the temples their vanquished rivals patronised, ferreted away the deities installed there, and in extreme cases, even broke them.

Just listen to yourself. I know its fashionable to blame it all on the British! This chap Tharoor has impressed everybody by his Oxford speech and even this uneducated Modi about how much the British owe us! But look at the real history of the world! We were OK 2000 years ago. But when the British came we were ruled by selfish, untrustworthy Pimps who called themselves "RULERS". every few years we had wars among ourselves. There was violence and slaughter everywhere. They connived against each other and only their few cronies and their own people prospered. Their chamchas (like the Nehru family) lived royal lives. When the British came we only had handlooms and spice industry! Just think of this - if we were that superior, we would have been going up in stature in the last 70 years instead of spiraling down. All I am saying is that "this Fay guy" predicted correctly!!!!

    • @warnpassion
      @warnpassion 6 лет назад

pooran gattu What seems to be so fashionable to you? Are arguments stating the facts and truths about India's colonial history brushed off as being fashionable? As I say again, we may have imperfections (which country is?) but we are still a thousand times better than the thieving, avaricious and murdering board of directors of the corporation that ruled over us for 100 years and the white queen, Victoria and her fucking family which ruled over us for the 90 years that followed. What was the average GDP growth during those two centuries? It was 0.01%. What is the GDP growth rate now? It is between 7 - 8% continuous for the last decade. There are many areas where we need to improve but the seeds of the problems which were left behind by the british dive and rule policy will take some time to get solved. What do you mean by 'only' the handloom and spice industry? It was the most profitable and booming industry in the medieval world, just how IT is today. It seems to me that you are an empire apologist or severely suffer from an identity crisis.

Dylan Thomas we will never have the support here. We still have a population who have been taught that it is our fate to pursue the profession and the culture into which we were born in. Even today we are ruled by a well organized cast based set of rulers who will never change! Every single Ordinance that ever did India any good came from the white man and continues! Just last week the "me-too" thing has come to India! Ajso every month or two the Supreme Court of India borrows an idea out of the White man's Law Book!
Let me repeat what you just said and if you go through it I believe its more true today than ever before:“Power will go to the hands of rascals, rogues, freebooters; all Indian leaders will be of low calibre & men of straw. They will have sweet tongues and silly hearts. They will fight amongst themselves for power and India will be lost in political squabbles.”

One sided unbalanced ungrateful speech from Mr.Tharoor. If the British wouldn't have developed India, India would have been worse than Africa today, as a illiterate underdeveloped poverty stricken superstitious country.
When British entered India, Indians were practising sati, low caste Indians who formed the majority of the country couldnt study, medical facilities were scarce, there was no proper justice system, there were no science and technology, no trains, no buses, no printing press, well nothing was there in India. All India had was natural resources like spices, gold, etc.
If we value India's natural resources in today's money against India's Industrial value, natural resources is a negligible fraction. So India should be grateful to the British for giving India a life in the world stage. If British didnt enter India, India today would be carrying a begging bowl before the world to feed India.

Sashi Tharoor claims that the British destroyed the Indian shipbuilding business, but look at the boats that Indian pirates were using versus the British and Portuguese man of war. And why wouldn't the British and Portuguese Navy defend their trading ships from Indian pirates. Look at the Indian maratha empire grabs and gallivat boats compared to British Portuguese trading ships and British Portuguese Navy man of war. Indians were just pirates in a tiny boat blasted out of the water by British cannons. Did you see Tom Hanks movie? Did the British Portuguese Navy lose a battle at Sea to the indians?
