Regarding early automation of stone furnaces: You can set 7 miners around the assembly machine AND have an inserter put the finished furnaces into a chest. Filling up all miners with a full stack of coal should give you enough furnaces for all your smelting needs for quite some time. Also, it is quite a bit faster because the assembler doesn't need to wait for material as much.
I already loved your Factorio Entry Level to Megabase 2 series, so I'm happy to see it coming back for season 3 :3 Your explanations really helped me a lot understanding how the game works.
Wow. I never thought about putting two different crafting ingredients into a single chest. That's a huge early game time and space saver. This is why I like the KoS beginner videos so much.

That smelting column style is so psychedelic! It's funky to see the ore and plates going in opposite directions like that. I had never thought of that kind of setup, and it makes _a lot_ of sense depending on the kind of terrain you're working it. Another unexpected, brand new idea (for me, at least), proving once more that one never knows "everything" about this game!
OMG, I went a little crazy in my block of smelting columns, and biters went crazy with all the pollution. You are correctly easing in lol. Great to compare builds so far. So enjoying the Factorio love!

I liked your use of “un-repair” as damage. I’m going to use that next time I break something in the house, especially during any home improvement project. I didn’t break it, I temporarily un-repaired it! :)
Actually for the power poles, you can make 1 next to the burner inserter and another up form the 2nd steam engine. So there will be 2 lines of power, up and down. And then just connect them at the start of the column. I like this design little bit more because those 20 boilers are really wide in total and this saves some space.
Kos, I suggest only using one or two burner inserted for your power. then switch to your normal inverters. this give you more efficient use of supplies but still gives security if you loose power so they can restart on there own.
I'd rather have the whole line be able to restart itself at the same time. Just one or two may not generate enough electricity for the inserters to switch on. I'm not realy concerned with a couple of pieces of coal here and there ;-)
very educational video :) I do feel like coal into electricity is the worst thing to automat first :) coal into furnace - furnace into crafting seems much more efficient
Hi KOS! I'm a little late to the Factorio game, and your videos have helped me immensely!! I hope your well. A quick question, how did you move a segment ~19:00? Trying to figure out how to use deconstruct plus copy/paste to move a copied or blueprinted structure like you did there. Cheers!
Thanks for another video. I was looking at your blueprints and I noticed you don’t have your starter base blueprint on the google drive anymore. I was trying to recreate the 0.17 one from memory last night. Love your content.
Hi there! Bought factorio finally yesterday and still learning the game. On 34:00 why does she puts a splitter instead of justing letting the 2nd belt drop on the main belt? Also im having a hard time with belts filling on 1 side completely and having the other empty. On miners i understand i just need to "zig-zag" the machines, but on production? Did she managed this problem with the 31:00 explanation? If so, i'll always be needing to mirror splitters or something?
"We're eventually going to take this temporary production down" *finishes rocket* "Okay, now we can take down that temporary capsule construction setup."
Love your tutorial :) Having myself severe arthritis I understand your problem entirely. I use the mod FasterStart that gives an armour, powerplant, nightvision and 25 con.bots. This helps me a lot with bigger builts as I only have to make a blueprint once and save it in a folder and import the string. Not only it helps the pain in my hands but mostly im to high on the painkillers to remember wtf im doing :p
I'm not a fan of the mods that give you limited bots because for me they kinda defeat the purpose. You have to wait around for sloooooooowwwwwwwwness. It's kinda awful. Try nanobots!
Hi KOS! Love your videos :) since these series are for beginners, maybe it is worth explaining how to calculate ratios for things (e.g. why 48 furnaces, 30 drills, 20 boilers and so on) .
you do realize your coal line is above your smelter line yest your smelter coal supply is set to bottom feed not top feed ... if you split from the corner of the power line coal belt ... then you can feed the smelters and move your smelter line down as you need more ... and increase your coal production as needed ... and still keep your power well fed with plenty of margin for slack . lol not too bad took you 10 minutes to figure out the coal ... . When I setup my power coal line ... I always set it up as my first line on the bus ... then I can split off as needed ... in general my first four lines are coal, iron ore, copper ore, and stone .... then the next set of four is the processed iron and copper ... 3 iron to 1 copper ... and then the rest are filled as needs dictate ... but the last 4 are always my science products ... and they filter back as needed
It didn't take 10 minutes to "figure out coal". There was always the possibility of routing it from the south. Please don't be so insulting... I have played this game before.
In about six months, I suggest you look into Space Haven. It isn't what you would want yet (no tech tree for instance) but they are working hard on it. Caledorn covered the original release, if you haven't watched that yet.
edit: 21:30 had the shortcut bar info i know this is an old video but in case anyone sees this... I'm a new player and I don't get how she has access to a lot of stuff. I herd her say she has copy/paste because of console commands? Is that a mod? And the robots early game, is that also a mod? I'm trying to loosely follow along but having trouble and then I lose the spot in the video where she explains how she got stuff lol
Hi! The bots early game is a mod called Nanobots. Otherwise, everything else you mentioned is vanilla. They are unlocked over time as you play, (and you might not need it early unless you want to plan). (They are unlocked when you get robots). However, you can use a console command (does not disable achievements): /unlock-shortcut-bar
Mostly habit, but a good reason being that once you move on to electric furnaces and deconstruct these, you can reuse/upcycle the inserters. Also, in steel smelting columns, you often need long-handed as well as inserters between furnaces, so you need power poles anyway.
13:12: KoS: [carefully planning out her bus] me: "hi, fishy fishy fishy!" :D [I think I didn't get enough sleep. Sorry. Hopefully this is funny to more than just me.]
How do you pick up items from the belt without destroying the belt? I feel like there are so many control hints I could use like the counting and blueprint ones! Great stuff
So I've not even gotten past whichever tutorial introduces you to the green circuity things, is there a reason to mix belts with splitters instead of just running them straight into one another on the sides? I only ask because splitters melt my brain and the little extra bit of belt on the side that isn't used that gets a bit of resources on it drives my apparently ocd self up the wall. Didn't think I cared that much about tiny things like that but I suspect this game will help me discover all sorts of new psychosis I can go get diagnosed.
Katherine! Can you please get the 'my own pollution' mod for this series? It changes the color of pollution on the map from red to white so that color-blind players can see it. The default red color is almost completely unrecognizable on a busy map with even mild colorblindess. I know you are trying to be especially inclusive with the new series and I'm excited to watch!
I will consider it. However, I wasn't able to find it in the mod portal at all in any of the last 3 versions of the game. I searched with the you gave me as well as with "pollution", and nothing came up with that name.
@@KatherineOfSky More accurately, first they made it so that undergrounds didn't help. Then they changed things so that inserters could compress belts perfectly.
The new mining-drill art does animate a lot more slowly than the old; I found it felt like they had a power shortage too! Wouldn't make a difference for new players, I suppose, but it will make it that much harder to notice when they're *really* running slowly.
What is a splitter/what does it do, and what are its limitations? Im a true noob, ive only played the tutorial, so even this early game stuff is new to me
Sorry about that... I had MAJOR technical issues with the recording and had to restart several times... Was hard to keep track of what I mentioned and didn't! :D
I downloaded your 1.0 Malls from your Google Drive in the description, and the combinators don't seem to display the items as theyre supposed to. Do you know how this might be fixed?
Yeah, my annoyances/arguments with my nanobots and recently the construction drones mod is the buggers like to finish the ghosts that are the furthest away from me LOL. Like, can you guys finish up the work near me first please?
Do the machines always produce pollution... or do they only produce pollution as they work? (Like if a machine is only producing at 50%, will it only produce 50% pollution compared to running nonstop?)
Different machines produce pollution differently when idle. Miners completely shut off, while others have "drain" and continually produce pollution at a low level
I don't understand why I can't see nanobots in my UI. I don't have that gun thing or the option to see bots - and I'm already making blue sciences and have researched everything that requires blue/green/grey/red. help!? I would love to be able to do this but I seem to have missed something critical at some point.
What's your favorite style of smelting array?

[I think I didn't get enough sleep. Sorry. Hopefully this is funny to more than just me.]

How do you pick up items from the belt without destroying the belt? I feel like there are so many control hints I could use like the counting and blueprint ones! Great stuff
Press F to pick up from the belt. More: ruclips.net/video/Fs-WmS9AxSQ/видео.html
Hello Katherine, will you be going though blue prints in this series?
You just answered it, Thank you! LOL
If you run it into the side, it only fills one side of the belt, sometimes making the belt unbalanced. Come to my discord if you need any help.
Use three miners and an inserter out to get maximum stacks of furnaces
Didn't you need like 2 undergrounds at the last 2 furnaces to fully fill the belt?
Nope. That was fixed years ago. :-)
@@KatherineOfSky More accurately, first they made it so that undergrounds didn't help. Then they changed things so that inserters could compress belts perfectly.
@@NoLongerBreathedIn Yep, I've lived through the history ;-)
The new mining-drill art does animate a lot more slowly than the old; I found it felt like they had a power shortage too! Wouldn't make a difference for new players, I suppose, but it will make it that much harder to notice when they're *really* running slowly.
That's a great point.
so i just started playing this game and i can't seem to find nanobots in the research list
They are a mod.
@@KatherineOfSky thanks
Friendly comment: increased rate of bullets is increased dps 😊 Love this series. Learning allt
Increased DPS, yes, but it just uses bullets faster, doesn't give them extra damage or reduce production costs. Glad you're enjoying the series!
@KatherineOfSky how do you detach the camera from the player to scroll around the area? Not in the map screenof course. Thank You
You have to be in the sandbox mode which is a different map setup. There might be a way to do it: check the console commands on the wiki.
KoS: That's very tasty nice.
Me, just finishing a mini sticky toffee pudding: Why yes it was! 😋
HAHAHA!
21:00 me, trying to follow along with the witchcraft, not understanding it
31:18 me, understanding and having my mind blown at the same time
What is a splitter/what does it do, and what are its limitations? Im a true noob, ive only played the tutorial, so even this early game stuff is new to me
Check out the wiki for basic information like that.
helps to see how you do it
I hope you're okay 🥺💓
Hi! Where do you get the Mods you have listed...I am interested in the FNEI: QoL mod useful for beginners (shows recipes and ingredient usage)
Get them through the in-game mod downloader. When the game starts, click Mods.
@@KatherineOfSky Thank you
When you place belts over a resource does the resource disappear under the belt or is it still there and can it still be mined?
It can still be mined. It doesn't erase the ore patch from the world.
@@KatherineOfSky Thank you!
Made me giggle 0:58 6:08 😊
Sorry about that... I had MAJOR technical issues with the recording and had to restart several times... Was hard to keep track of what I mentioned and didn't! :D
Inspired me to jump back into Factorio!
I downloaded your 1.0 Malls from your Google Drive in the description, and the combinators don't seem to display the items as theyre supposed to. Do you know how this might be fixed?
That's a setting you have to turn on for Alt mode. By default, it doesn't show for combinators.
@@Gnomaana Thank you! I actually already managed to find it in the settings
^^ As Thomas said, it's in the UI settings: I showed it in the first episode. (after I loaded into the map).
Yeah, my annoyances/arguments with my nanobots and recently the construction drones mod is the buggers like to finish the ghosts that are the furthest away from me LOL. Like, can you guys finish up the work near me first please?
They go left to right, top to bottom.
is that nanobot thing a mod? never seen it before (i dont use any mods)
Yep, it's a mod. I talk about it in the first episode.
Did you downloed the mod?
How do you enable that muti - 1,2,3,4 menu?
It's in the UI settings
@@KatherineOfSky thank you, I am a first-time player.
