yeah i feel like people don't understand that we don't choose what we tic and that somehow we tic what we think? i just wish people were made more aware of how tics work so they wouldn't need to ask questions like this
I know what u mean, because my cousin has it but u it's not like a lot of them happening at once he only has two that only happens when he is really stressed. He would blink in one eye so many times for a few seconds or something it's hard to explain😅 but I would help him with his other tic, which is when he pulls his pointer finger or middle finger non stop, and because I can't stop him from doing it I usually try and distract him with something so his stress goes down😁 it sometimes helps but sometimes it doesn't.
The way we are finding out (being made more aware) is by asking questions...thats how people find things out & thus become more aware is by asking questions & unfortunstly not every single person is going to learn the things at the same time, we all learn the same things, just at different times. I hope you can see what I'm trying to say, im not the best at explaining something 😂✌😁
I've never understood why people can here "They can't help it" and still ask questions like "But what if you say...". Like dude, THEY CANNOT HELP WHAT THEY SAY! I also get so angry when people say "It's because they think about bad things too much so their ticks are bad too" Like...what?
Because sometimes people are liars. Have you not seen that episode of South Park when Cartman faked having tics to insult people? That's not just a cartoon, real people do that shit.

I have a friend who has Tourette’s and the N word is one of his tics. Usually it’s completely random and when people say “it’s because he’s thinking it”, well yes it’s because he’s thinking “Don’t say it. Don’t say it” and he ends up saying it. Luckily everyone understands because he has involuntarily called many black people the N word but they all know what Tourette’s is. Sometimes my friends will purposely try to trigger his tics by saying “Ricky, who steals ?” or “Hey Ricky ! Who picks cotton ?” and he gets so mad at them because he will end up ticking the N word and he gets embarrassed as hell.

My dad has a friend with tourettes and the N-word is like his most common tic, one time my parents went to eat with him and they sat right next to this massive black dude that looked at him strange everytime he'd say it as a tic
I have very mild tourrets syndrome, and i have four tics i get mainly 1: barking, this one is hilarious because it terrifies people cuz of how realistic it is 2: head tilts, these can be aggresive and can hurt at times 3: whistling, it gets me in trouble at school rareley because it can be a bit disruptive 4: vocal tics. Just vocal tics
Isn’t it also with Tourette’s that rare or taboo phrases that sit in the back of the mind bring up more attention for a tic trigger since the word could heighten stress and the thought be intrusively occupying the brain? So the person likely to have that tic is most likely the person actively hoping they wouldnt say the thing?
Not at all the same- but I have OCD and I sometimes get these very disturbing and out of character thoughts that I have to counter act with a “good thought” or specific action. I heard that this is actually pretty common in people with OCD and that very often the thoughts that come up are specially ones that negate our character. For example if you have specifically a major fear of a specific animal that thought might be that you want it to come inside. I imagine that with turrets a tic like this would be similar. You would never ever want to use that word- but that’s precisely why it becomes a tick. Not at all a fact it’s just a possible similarity

I don’t have Tourette’s, but I have an FND that causes tics. This has been one of my greatest fears and I’ve been close to saying the N-word before as I tic. Like I can feel my body fighting me to say it, but I’ve literally forced myself to not say it. I kinda know how to hold my tics in. It’s kinda like holding your breath. Like you can train yourself to hold your breath for longer periods of time, but at the end of the day you need to breathe.
Someone please correct me if I’m wrong but I imagine it would be like a hiccup, you can’t stop it from happening it just happens, ppl shouldn’t judge u for that
When my hospital cleared me for driving, (I have both Tourette’s and FND) they told me that because I was generally aware before things happened/got bad I would be okay to drive as long as I was sensible with it! For example, if I felt attacks coming on etc, to pull over until it ended or find the nearest place to park for its duration! (Seeing as most roads have a layby or nearby service station.) I’ve never had an attack while driving, but I think part of that is due to how focused I get while driving, which helps me regulate and keep calm, which then also calms my tics! Hope this helps!
Society needs to be educated on conditions. I don't have touretts but I do stim (which is a bit like tics) a bit from ASD and ADHD and when people know I have it they look down at me like I'm a lesser being its not that we all need to be treated differently just we all need a bit of help for certain things which is different for everyone 😊
Also asking these kind of questions can trigger tics. Why would anyone do that ?! Like leave her alone, you don't have to know the list of everything she says or does. Even more if she can't help it -
Curiosity, you can't expect people who're ignorant to act like those who know, and if nobody explains it, they'll keep being ignorant, keep asking, and keep possibly making it a tick for others.

My now 17yo has verbal tics & the N word is one of them. Thankfully it has evolved over time & it comes out a lot less often. It was heartbreaking when it was happening most often. They were diagnosed at age 5 with PDDNOS, ADHD, ASD, with verbal tics. At age 12 we moved to a big city & suddenly they were being jumped, followed, bullied & harrased for this particular tic. It was truly horrifying 😭
Why is that even on people’s minds to even ask that question?? Why is that a question?? I don’t understand what type of people are asking you that question? It’s just it would have never crossed my mind. 🤷🏽♀️
It might be because they heard that people with ticks are more likely to have ticks of stuff they don't want to do or say. So they're intentionally making her think about it to make her have that tick. Because some people are cruel.
cuz white people have to involve the n word in all of their hypothetical scenarios🙄another one is "would you say the n word for a million dollars?" obsessed..

I'm a black and Indian woman. I understand. It isn't their fault if they say it. I have a Caucasian friend with tiks who does say it. N let me tell you she cries so hard every time when it comes out. The tears coming from her eyes are so heartfelt. It breaks my heart seeing her go thru that. She thinks I'm going to stop being her friend one day because of that word. I would never leave her over a word. There was a time where a incident occured and I was called that in front of her and she went in on those elderly women. Then she went to the owner of the place where it happened and got them put out. I know my friend and know her heart... But she can't help it.

As far as I'm concerned it's just a word. Yes you shouldn't it as it's disrespectful but if u say it and not intending to hurt with your words then ah well accidents happen
I really hope this doesn’t sound rude in any way (please let me know if it is), but your tics are extremely adorable. Like, “oh my god the sound is very cute” kind of adorable. And I understand that the sound might not be adorable to you since it could potentially get in the way of doing things, but I personally thought they sounded very cute :D
