    You mentioned how experts know their art so well that when they teach someone else it, they often miss things because they assume steps in a process are common sense...this is why I have a job! I did my graduate work on this whole concept. Now I work with subject matter experts to break down what they do into teachable instruction. It's so fascinating. I have learned how to fix an airplane, extract a tooth, do electrical work, etc., but nothing makeup-related. Maybe it can be my next project :)

    something that my therapist told me a while ago that i still think about every day is "your common sense is not everybody else's common sense." it really applies to so many things and what you said about makeup and common sense really just reminded me of that.

    I grew up doing film and theatre, and I think what people forget about using stage makeup techniques is that it is supposed to be budge proof, but not worn for a long time. One theatre production I was in I had to literally layer different character makeup over and over again because my changes didn’t allow enough time to wash off and re-apply, so my previous makeup also had to be the base for the next layer. Seriously aggressive, but it was only on for 4 hours…5 at most. I had to be able to dance in it, stand under hot stage lights, go through costume changes, wear heavy costumes. That makeup had to stand up to waaaay more than daily wear. For film, my makeup was extremely minimal. Just enough to even out my skin tone, and it’s much more similar to what I wear day to day.

  • @landshark3509
    @landshark3509 2 года назад +458

    That first technique was also popular in eras (and contexts) where "foundation" was either just greasepaint or otherwise super heavy and oily and needed that much powder. Modern cosmetics are formulated much differently

    One of the best “basics” I ever learned from Robert is that your skin prep before makeup is not the same as your usual skin care. I spent years thinking my skin just couldn’t work with makeup because the routine that kept it happy did not mesh with makeup application. I kept trying to do exclusively one routine or the other and it was always a disaster. It was definitely a forehead slap moment when he explained it.
    I also never knew hooded eyes was a thing until Robert. So basically I was in my 30’s before he coached me through why everything was always a fail for me. Better late than never I guess! So grateful for Robert!

    3:13 I've been doing this technique since forever whenever I wanted my makeup to last over 12 hours. I call it super setting and I don't use it very often. It worked with most foundations. I use way less powder (Maybelline fit me) than she does, and press it into my skin with a very dense brush, so it leaves a very clear layer of powder that is different from lightly dusting it over my face, but not a whole thick layer like she has. Then take my setting spray (always Mario Badescu, either of the 3 sprays) and DOUSE my face in it. Not that it was dripping off of my face, but just enough that you could visibly see a layer on liquid on it. Then take a beauty blender, preferably one that was the fuzzy kind, kind of microfibre-ish, and press the liquid into my skin until it was gone and the sponge had soaked up the excess, while leaving the rest of my face with a very natural finish. Not only did it take away the powder/matte look, it also made my face last upwards of 12+ hours (I was sometimes pulling 15/16 hour days with the same makeup and minor blotting).

      Who is that woman? The one that was so impressed by the primer?
      She's constantly in my recommended even tho I don't watch that much makeup content, and she has always "just discovered" or her friend "just told her about this amazing product", and then she proceeds to try the product like "omg I hope this really is as good as people claim it is!".
      Then proceeds to squeal and hype the product for doing whatever that product is supposed to do. If it's a blush and she applies it and it looks like a normal blush, she goes "omg look at that I can't believe it!!!". Same with any powder that mattifies, any concealer that conceals... any product that does what that product is supposed to do.
      Either she's the most easily impressed woman on the planet, or her reviews aren't very trustworthy... she has hundreds of thousands likes in all of her videos.

She didn't get blurred as much as she did knock back shine. It's almost exactly true porefessional and all the others.

      Tip that works for me and my olive skin: color corrector! LA Girl has a decently strong green color corrector that's liquid, I use a little bit in my liquid foundation and it turns into the right color! I do mean a LITTLE bit though. And I mix it all before I put it on my face.

Constance Bennett and her sister Joan, Carol Lombard and Ann Sheridan were so beautiful. Marlena Dietrich too. Ann Sheridan's eyes were gorgeous, her eyelashes were always perfect. They were great actresses.

    I kind of have an issue with the "3 undertones" of foundation. Depending on the depth of colour, there can be up to 5 undertones, and not just the going from peach to orange/pink to red changes. I have an olive undertone, and depending on the time of year I need either a grey or green undertone to my foundation and it is so damn hard to find that in a foundation/concealer/powder. I have to colour correct everything, I mixed a green colour corrector into my foundation and concealer, then use a green powder to correct the colour of my powder.
    You know those beige-green colour correctors? I can almost use those as foundation.

      The closest I've come are the Tarte Rainforest of the Sea and the Cover FX foundation drops - but the Cover FX only comes in the half size not full size. The only problem there is, I'm a medium skin tone, and they're slightly to dark in winter, but in summer they're way too light for me. And the next step up with an olive undertone would match my mother, and she's black, so that's a no. (I'm mixed and my father is so white he's practically translucent, so I'm very pale compared to my mother's side of the family.)

    Those super mattifying primers are so weird. My makeup never stays on whenever I use one. The only one that works decently is the ELF Putty primer(original one), but even then, I tend to use it when I'm not wearing liquid foundation. I wish I knew why primer and liquid foundation hates me, but primer and a light dusting of powder foundation works well.

      @Robert Welsh So far, so good. The hardest part for me, I think, is to keep positive when it's all gone wrong, so many thanks for the well-wishes, I greatly appreciate them.
      I agree about the primer, double so when it doesn't say it's mattifying or pore-filling, so I have a bin full of primers that I can only use if I'm not going to wear foundation, which I supoose is fine if I'm only wearing sunscreen.😹

    • @DinkyInky2
      @DinkyInky2 2 года назад

      @Tazzie1312 That's what I thought, so I decided to swap out the serum foundation I'm testing for a different one. They should have worked with my NARS Radiant foundation which has silicones in it, but it kinda slid right off. I end up using that foundation without primer at all, though it sits weird near my eyes and forehead, which frustrates me to no end, because it's otherwise a beautiful foundation, and the concealer is so lovely, and the powder foundation is a nice pairing to lightly set it, and do touch ups.

    I teach beginners how to ballroom dance, and it was so difficult at first to teach something that I can do without thinking much. It even comes up now when I teach a routine for a performance that I learned years ago, since my body knows it and my brain isn't involved anymore. If I think about it I can't even remember it! It opened my eyes a lot and made me really take care to pay attention to how I learned things, not just the end result.

      Teaching is hard!!
      Specially when it is something you've done for YEARS by yourself or just not showing others the steps and tips.
      I teach a " plant class" it's not like a college course, I don't have a degree or anything and the people that come don't receive anything except information
      When I first started... It was SO HARD I kept stuttering over my words and trying to figure out exactly how to talk to this group of people who have no idea about plants. That first class I messed up so much i kept using words they didn't know and phrases they didn't get.
      I swear I've never seen so many confused people in one room.
      Thankfully the place that I teach at is an underground art shop, so everyone in there was so willing to help me break it down better to show others.
      I'm about a year into my classes and Im gaining " students" with every class 😊
      BUT MY GOD IT WAS HARD IN THE BEGINNING 😂
