      I really wished that Grim Dawn has a dedicated closed online server. I like playing ARPGs for fun, but I felt more invested in playing one that's like PoE and D2/D3 where you have characters stored on server side to prevent cheating issues and have ladders to compete, and stronger online multiplayer support. And an economy as well. I feel like items have value more if I can trade them.

      Very simple. Because of the fact that the game is not online, devs don't pay attention to it's security. well, it is impossible. So we have alot of different utility programms for GD now including GD Stash. It basicly kills any reason to farm and grind. Beacuse why would you spend your time for this, if you can get any item you need? You just finish the game once and that's it. Well, you can try out some more builds with all the sets and items you want, but it will take you a couple of days.

      @Vincere1105 5 лет назад +14

      OH PLEASE! It's a mod-based ARPG with a community full of people who quite literally edit their way into endgame with GD Stash-allowing them to create any item in the game on the spot, & giving them access to a slew of other game-breaking features that they can take into multiplayer without penalty.
      Grim Dawn is great if you're into single player ARPG's that allow unfettered access to modding, but the game is a total flop from the multiplayer perspective, as the modding stands as a bulwark against anything even remotely resembling an interactive & thriving multiplayer experience. And analyzing this game's Total Sales : Current Players ratio shows that only something like 0.3% of the total # of people who have purchased the game actively play it (And just 3 weeks after a major DLC launch). I'd argue those numbers suggest that most people who purchase the game get bored of it once they realize that the multiplayer aspect of the game is made to be exceptionally boring & shallow due to the modding.

    • @Vincere1105
      @Vincere1105 5 лет назад +3

      And if anyone reading this thinks I'm exaggerating about the modding, just take 10 minutes or so to Google "GD Stash", & find a video going over everything it can do. It's essentially an in-game God Tool that you can use in multiplayer without risk of bans or suspensions; & it's also arguably the primary reason why this game has no thriving economy.

    • @triggermortis8252
      @triggermortis8252 5 лет назад +45

      @@Vincere1105 It is not an online multiplayer game. It is a single player game primarily, with multiplayer capability if one wishes. Vast difference from PoE or D3 in this regard. But you likely knew this already and your comparison is disingenuous. No one is claiming that GD is the online multiplayer ladder king - or even contestant. By all means, if you are in it for multiplayer competition, look elsewhere.

    • @Vincere1105
      @Vincere1105 5 лет назад

      @@triggermortis8252 I was & still am under the impression that the key takeaway from my comments above is that this game is, & I quote myself, "great if you're into single player ARPG's that allow unfettered access to modding", but a total flop outside of the realm of single player experience. I never stated that GD was primarily a multiplayer game, nor did I insinuate that.
      Mentioning Grim Dawn's failure in the realm of multiplayer experience is absolutely valid if you consider the sheer amount of publicity this game is getting from content creator's who specialize in, & have built a fan base around, online multiplayer games like PoE (I mean hello, we're in LiftingNerds comment section right now after all). I'd wager that Grim Dawn's concurrent player base is so low relative to the total number of copies sold specifically because of how many fans of multiplayer ARPG's find their way to Grim Dawn before realizing that it has no real potential whatsoever as a multiplayer game.
      With that said, I think my criticism is absolutely valid. And I'll go even further to warn anyone reading this not to waste their money on Grim Dawn unless they don't mind grinding what is effectively a single player ARPG.

    • @triggermortis8252
      @triggermortis8252 5 лет назад +31

      @@Vincere1105 You did insinuate that when you shouted down the OP when they mentioned nothing at all about multiplayer - but instead the "pace of the game, atmosphere, story, content". No one plays multiplayer games for these aspects, other than perhaps pace. You brought them into the conversation so that you could compare it PoE. Lifting did not compare it, other than to mention similar complexity. Perhaps he enjoys GD as a change of pace from the crappy loot drops and "economy" simulator? Anyways - PoE is great if you are into it. GD is also great if that is your style. And gamers are allowed to enjoy both.

    03. It's about the journey
    Amen, brother! I'm sick and tired of „content creators” theorycrafting builds and telling noobs to rush to lvl 94 so they can „fully experience” the game with X and Y set that is OP.
    The best part of the game for me is the leveling to 94. Having to min-max OA, DA, devotions and resists is a real challenge and that's where the fun resides.

    Great review and I agree with your points. Very long, but there's a lot of content and QoL features (far more than people realise) in this, it really is the best ARPG around. I do feel like DLC should be addressed - although not required it really does round out and add to the full game and people who don't have it are missing out. This does make it quite expensive though.

  • @Inkaflare7

    I played Grim Dawn right after it came out of beta and before I really got into Path of Exile. Had one hell of a good time with it, but after 700 hours and 8 characters I got bored with simply running through the 3 difficulties with each character and then having nothing to do with them beyond the occasional Nemesis boss farming. That much is to be expected for a game by an Indie developer that you buy once and that doesn't have the ability to provide massive content updates every few months like PoE can thanks to its business model.
    Came back for a bit with Ashes of Malmouth so there was some new stuff to do again, which was great for rekindling the fun for another while, but there still wasn't any real endgame system to use my now max leveled characters on (aside from Crucible which I wasn't a fan of.) The new expansion seems to finally add a procedurally generated endgame dungeon system akin to rifts in D3 and maps in PoE, so I'll definitely give Grim Dawn another whirl sometime these days. The fact that all my gear is basically useless thanks to the now lv100 level cap is a bit daunting but with more options to farm legendaries without needing to trade with players, the hunt is a big part of the fun.

    • @yellowblanka6058

    I had Grim Dawn on my wishlist for a while and a friend of mine was kind enough to give me Grim Dawn for free! So I was pretty happy about giving it a try, I bought the expansions myself to maximize my experience and went on to play the game, it took me about 42 hours to complete the main storyline from beginning of normal to the end of normal, but that is actually just the beginning, there are 2 more difficulties and I didn't even touch any of the faction grinding yet, which looks like a really awesome mechanic to make farming way more interesting.
    Also trying to build out and perfect your character, trying diffirent devotion constellations to change the way you can play, the whole way you can customize your character is really awesome.
    I'm really enjoying this game and I'm looking forward to getting my character up higher as we speak, I managed to reach lvl 60 when I finished the game (I did explore all the zones, I didn't even complete the side missions yet because I was trying to make up lost time with my friend), but currently playing on elite difficulty and now going to read up on the story, I'm looking forward to it.

    I just recently bought the game, definitive version, at COG. I had trouble getting it to run. After 3 days of troubleshooting and tweaking, the problem was solved. All I had to do was make a character first. Hey, who knew? Now it's up and running, my biggest gripe was the teeny tiny text. I fixed that with a simple 2 in the right place in the init file. Overall, I'm loving it. Since respecing is a viable option, I'm just winging it for now. I managed to come up with a witch hunter class. Looking forward to seeing how that works out for me.

    The point about loot tables is very compelling. That's one thing I wish was different in POE. It's so much more rewarding when you can farm towards the exact item you need for your build, but that never happens because you can just buy the item you need. Unless you're playing SSF which honestly helps bring that feeling back. Even using the Fated prophecies for something you need feels great, but in trade league there's just no reason to do things yourself.

    'Loot that I could use to improve my character', sigh, my memory is blurry of the last time I had this thought in poe. Probably sometime back in 2014 when I made my first minion/specter build and got 'Bones of Ullr'. I am a supporter of ggg since the lunch and by all honesty I am starting to get tired, Last 2 leagues have been quite incomplete and rushed, one league after three months doesn't seem to be an optimal direction ggg is taking. Nor am I satisfied with the forced super sonic speed builds we have to play in order to be able to complete the league content and get absolutely underwhelming rewards.
    I genuinely hope that they will make enormous positive changes but in the meantime I will definitely try Grim Dawn , very exciting stuff.
    Thank you Lifting for the great review as always.

    How should i put this, EVERY ARPG is like that once.
    Story that you care, challenge that you face.
    But as the game age, story becomes less of a concern for people who already spent years in that game.
    POE , D2, D3 actually all have pretty engaging story for your first or 2nd time of your journey, then you would just skip it afterward.
    This can 100% be said about Grim Dawn too. The magic of story wont be there forever because you're going to replay it again and again.
    Also about difficulty, POE , D3 all has end game contents that's immensely difficult for you to challenge regardless how strong your characters becomes since Delve and GR scale infinitely.
    Your criticism about POE/ D3 losing difficulty while Grim Dawn doesn't is an absurd one because not only it isn't quite true, it is also biased and ignorant in some way.

    • @atropheusl8602
      @atropheusl8602 4 года назад +3

      You're misunderstanding what he is saying.
      Grim Dawn sets itself apart from PoE and D3 when it comes to the journey/questing, because you can choose how a lot of quests will end depending on what dialogue option you choose, it's not all one sided objectives (they do exist, of course) There are secret/hidden quest as well, you can target farm, and there is a reputation system, so exploration becomes more important than other ARPG.
      Secondly he didn't say PoE and D3 didn't have difficult content. Using infinite scaling content as an example of difficulty is laughable, it's just a parser to see how far you can go before it becomes impossible because you're stats can't compete with the monsters stats. But if you compare what tier 1-10 mapping in PoE and Expert difficulty in Grim Dawn is like you would maybe understand what he means.
      Apart from some bosses in PoE everything is getting one shot as you zoom through the map, it's not necessarily a bad thing but it is a difference between the games, the only time I worry about non-boss monsters in PoE is when they have an on death effect, you will almost never have to deal with their mechanics when they're alive because they don't even get to react to your character.
      D3 is the worst example of difficulty because of it's itemisation, you farm your set - go into GR stun lock everything as you kill them off, sometimes luring mobs who got a charge skill first - then you hit a wall, so you have to do lower GR, farm out a better version of the set and repeat until there's no way to pass the wall.

      @@atropheusl8602 I agree... PoE becomes mindless currency trader in endgame... more useful to get gear.. and killing mobs is not fun, its either u got random out of screen 1 shotted.. or u just snowball and kill everyone on screen without them even trying to hit you..
      I prefer having less mobs perhaps, but actually mobs who stuns, or does something, so poisitioning or actually actively thinking how to play and survive means something...

  • @pleasuretokill
    @pleasuretokill 5 лет назад +1

    I really, really like certain aspects of this game. I have taken several characters to 100. Here's why I stopped playing:
    1) The devotion tree or constellation. I love upgrading characters, but this thing is just so mind numbingly confusing as to which nodes to pick to optimize my character that I basically just gave up. If you mess up early and don't unlock the right nodes, to unlock the other right nodes, then you will be behind on leveling end game skills and when you get to Ultimate you will get destroyed as you will probably get destroyed on Ultimate anyways. The game basically forces you to look up other peoples builds or get annihilated when you get to Ultimate. which brings me to #2....
    2) Difficulty. Man. The end game on GD is absolutely BRUTAL. If you haven't found good gear, Ultimate will eat your lunch, take your lunch money and beat your ass for crying about it. I found myself looking up builds (which I HATE doing, I like building a character I want to play....) because if you just build a character that "sounds good" to you... Ultimate will tear you apart.
    3) The solo slog through the lower difficulties. I will combine 2 gripes here. First is multiplayer. It is really, really bad in this game. So, you get to slog your way through the story mode of the game by yourself most of the time and the first 2 difficulties are basically pointless. Elite provides a decent challenge and Ultimate destroys you. The grind became too much basically and the multiplayer is the worst of all of the ARPGs that I play. I like playing these games with friends, but, yeah.... the join system is from the 90s or thereabouts.
    Mainly... The constellation is my main problem. I HATE looking up builds to see what I "should" pick... but, with the way the devotion tree is set up, if you don't do a cookie cutter build, then you most likely will choose wrong and screw your character for Ultimate. It's sad because I think I like the actual gameplay of this game better than every other ARPG in existence. I really think they need to add more constellation points or something. There are so many awesome skills and it seems you are really limited on which you can choose.

If i would nitpicking, i would mention the multiplayer i mean no dedicated servers, but hey, Crate Entertainment is still a small team, so it's okay in this case. I think the biggest magnets to this game that should be highlighted is the balance, all classes and almost all spells are perfectly valiable - and the pace. PoE sadly heavily suffers in the balance realm (in top 10 builds of 3.8, there is 7 witch builds, 6 of them are necromancer and most of them are minion specs..), it is always flavor of the season... on the same class - witch. The pacing is kinda ridiculous, you move way too fast and you wipe screens of enemies, although satisfying at first, it becomes rather dull.
    Also GD's perfomance is much better, now, its graphics are less detailed than poe's for sure, but you wont get drop to 1 fps because of an NPC spawn, ever, you wont get server DC's because GD is offline. Playing with friends is worthwhile in GD and you can really synergize builds insread of just one being glasscannon and second heal bot. Also the number of "skins" that look good you get is unmeasurably higher than PoE's (all FREE poe skins suck besides some uniques), and you can apply any skins you have found on your acc, for the in game "gold", no premium currency, same with stashes etc.
    The build complexity is prolly deeper than PoEs. PoE kinda pretends to be hyper complex but than all you really need is either max your energy shield or go for the health rectangle... and then just +damage nodes of your choice. In GD, you have the double class system and devotion on top of it, where devotion is similiar to passive tree, but it actually also gives actives and spell modifications. You also have better crafting and attuning in GD. There is just way too many positives for that game. It is also not owned by chinese online investor company lol.
