Dogsong (Undertale) sight-read by Tom Brier

  • I transcribed this last year but there hasn't been time for Tom to read through things lately. Tonight, he was able to read through three pieces. I made sure this was one of them since there have been so many requests for it. Unfortunately that one G-flat key was sticking on the piano tonight.
    As always, you can download my transcription at www.keeper1st.c...

      VikTr0 There’s most likely plenty of repeats going on here. Also Tom usually puts some improvisations in while he’s playing, just to spice the song up.

    And then there’s me trying to decipher a single note for five seconds, then taking another five to locate it on the piano and in which octave, and then pressing it, and then trying to figure out the rhythm to the second, and then taking a long break between each measure feeling accomplished with myself.

      Unfortunately, Tom was critically injured a couple weeks after this video was recorded. He has suffered rather bad brain damage. We hope that he'll be able to recover but it's too early to tell. Tomorrow will mark one month since the accident. He opens his eyes and blinks in reaction to things around him, but as of yet seems to have no ability to communicate or understand anything. However, he did appear to gesture toward a CD player when it played one of his compositions. He has yet to move his right leg at all, and very rarely moves his right arm, so there seems to be some paralysis on the right side for the moment.

Regardless Tom was injured quite heavily and was In a coma for around a year(I may be wrong on timing) and has been in a slow recovery ever since. This was a few years ago now. Primitively, each line or space is assigned with a note, and each note has a length of time it should be held for. There are also tempo markings and marks that show how the notes should be played. Then all you need is an inner metronome and enough skill to be able to read it on the fly, but this guy is quite amazing at it

    • @benaldo138
      @benaldo138 7 лет назад +23

      The time signature tells you the beat (4/4 is the common meter, so 4 quarter notes per measure. The standard if there is one. But there's others. Like 3/4 which is waltz time. 3 beats per measure! He switches to waltz time around 3:10, see if you can spot the difference!)
      From there you just gotta get the tempo (Beat speed. Tom taps his foot at the beginning to internalize the tempo) and then you just follow the notes along the staff (The horizontal lines) (I say just but this is where all the hard parts are, reading music is like reading english). Little vertical lines demark the measures on the staff (Which should equal to however many beats the time signature asks for) and then you play along. Whole notes take a whole measure, half notes half a measure, quarter notes one beat... and so on down the chain to eighth and sixteenth notes! The notes pitch is denoted by its position along the staff (On or in between or even sometimes completely above or below the lines) Read the music right to left, top to bottom, and play the notes to the beat and on tempo!
      For piano scores there's usually 2 staves lined up overtop one another. Top one is the right hand and bottom is the left hand.
      Tom plays the song ver batim the first time through, then he adds his own embelleshments because he's a talented musician and knows how to play around on his instrument. Then to have more fun he starts playing his own songs just in the same chord structure, or he changes the tempo/rhythm

    Tom is Tom, the goat, so don't misunderstand this:
    The guy (channel owner?) who makes these arrangements is obviously really fantastic at it, for Tom to have such confidence in the raggy tropes and tricks that come and go throughout, with a nice clear melody and good voicings. Kudos for some great arranging.
    Also that 6/4 section is🔥

    • @Keeper1st
      @Keeper1st  2 года назад +1

      Most things I gave to Tom I had re-scored myself because the arrangements online were not scored in a readable way. In some cases I did actually arrange the tunes myself as well. I don't remember whether I transcribed Dogsong myself or not. I think I might have done. I did add a C-flat on a chord that harmonically should have been a dominant D-flat (the original didn't actually have the seventh), as that would make the progression easier to read.

    Great! Just a curiosity: Tom is a master of ragtime piano, sightreading and improvisation, but I wonder if he could sightread other stuff other than rag tunes, I mean, I'm sure he can sightread anything, but if you put a non-rag sheet in front of him he would "rag" it or just play it stright? I read somewhere that when you're accustoized to syncopation etc it's a bit harder to play in stright style (and viceversa, if you play only stright, ex. classical music ecc, it's not that simple to get accustomized to rag style). What do you think?

    • @Keeper1st
      @Keeper1st  8 лет назад +66

      I've heard people ask him if he can sight-read classical music too. He says, "With difficulty." Ragtime is easier to sight-read because you don't actually have to read everything on the page; the left hand can be improvised and it still sounds good. You only need to see enough of the music to discern the chord sequence and then can "fake" it.

    • @Persun_McPersonson

      It's called a honky-tonk piano, and sounds different from a typical piano because one or more of the strings of a given note (Many of the higher notes are actually multiple strings being hit at once, rather than one, to give a "fuller" sound.) are made purposely slightly out-of-tune to give it that characteristic sound. If you'd rather not hire a tuner to mess with the piano to make it a honky-tonk, you can get a sort-of-similar sound by simply putting metal thumbtacks or short nails into the hammers; this is aptly known as a "tack piano"-which is a variant of something called a "prepared piano", which is just the practice of putting objects in-between the hammers and strings, or wedged in-between the strings themselves, to change the piano's timbre. Neat stuff.
