Snow Mountain Theme (スーパーマリオ64) sight-read by Tom Brier

- Опубликовано: 21 май 2012
- This tune, either as Snow Mountain, Cool Cool Mountain, Slider, or Bob-omb Battlefield -- all different versions of the same tune -- has been requested a lot. It is a fun tune indeed. Download my piano arrangement here: www.keeper1st.com/music/coolco... or from my site www.keeper1st.com/music/vgm.html
RUclipsr "wheelmanmitch" transcribed the entire band arrangement of it, which I then condensed into piano sheet music.
As always, Tom adds a lot more than what's on the page.
Recorded 19 May 2012 at the Sutter Creek Ice Cream Emporium, 51 Main Street, Sutter Creek, California. This was after the May 2012 meeting of the Mother Lode Ragtime Society. Игры

He did missionary work? That's so cool!!!!!
He must be getting sore by now.

Do you know any other pianists who play video game music this well?
If Tom Brier had an album of his interpretation of video game music. I would shell out money in a heartbeat.
THIS. This right here. As it is I've always felt a lot of Mario's music is heavily jazz & ragtime inspired, so after the 2 Super Mario World videos I just had the hugest grin thinking this is what an "HD remaster" of Super Mario Music would accurately sound like.
@@crithitjace Keeper has mentioned it a few times, but getting the licensing rights from Nintendo and other game companies to sell an album with their songs wasn't something Tom was interested in. And now with his injuries, it's not going happen even if he had the rights
@@akim2442 there are a lot of video game cover albums of Squenix games on Spotify, I don't know about Nintendo specifically but it seems like it's getting easier to get licensing rights these days at least!

The guy in the green shirt expresses all of our feelings. That feeling that you are just going to burst when sitting next to greatness. The awkward smile you can’t help but to have while sitting there witnessing history. And at the end of it, all you can do is laugh, because there are no words to describe that level of greatness.
We don’t even bother to aspire to be Tom, we aspire just to be the in the same room as him. Mr. Green Shirt is already more than we can hope to be.
Best description ever. "Mr. Green Shirt" lol :D

Japanese viewers, on a copy of this video posted to Nico Nico Douga, referred to him as Luigi.
Keeper1st Luigi? Is that what they call Green Mario in Japan?
MrJobocan Green Mario is Mario in a green outfit. Luigi is Luigi, Mario’s brother. I don’t know what you mean by calling him “Green Mario”.
An ode, "To Mr. Green Shirt" by L. Spiro
I'm so glad Tom invented the piano
Heh... Will was familiar with the tune, so he had a lot of grins as Tom messed around with it. You can hear him comment afterward, "That was great, Tom!"
I love how he just cracks up after every performance, like he's genuinely surprised by how amazing it was.

Fricking LEGEND! :D
That part starting at 5:19 almost made me cry. It was like the ending the song deserved. The end of a nostalgic era: everything was so simple when I was a child, and like every child, I always wanted to be an adult, to get a job and a house, it was just a matter of time to be an adult... Now as an adult, I just want to be a child again, but unfortunately I can't travel back in time, and the only way to go to the past is listening to these masterpieces, specially played by this legend. Tom brier you're awesome. Thank you for this.
Luiz Antonio Lol do you always cry like this?
I totally agree! Life's irony as the Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard puts it, "Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards".
same to me!!
Luiz Antonio for me when I was a kid I was like uhmmm being an adult looks hard let me bot be one and they slowing the years took ny childhood away 😂 😭

Tom Brier for president.

He could play the piano at his own inauguration

+jhett7 You mean.... *world piece* -rimshot-
Who else is watching old tom brier vids to pass the time while he heals up, because you just know that no one can possibly match his skill in improvising or sight-reading songs on piano, so watching others perform Briers songs aren’t good enough for you?
I'm listening to him everyday at work. No words can describe him.
This guy inspired me to finally take piano lessons.
Maybe Tom isn't able to play anymore but he still inspires other people with his incredible skills, thank you aswell for posting these videos
I remember this channel had maybe 50k subs when I first discovered this talented man on RUclips and now he's almost up to 100k subs. Despite Tom Brier no longer being capable of uploading himself playing the piano anymore, this is just a demonstration of how his talent on camera has truly caught the attention of everyone who has stumbled across this channel. Tom never uploaded any videos. He only had a RUclips account for following and commenting on others.

I wonder if Koji Kondo has seen this, or any other of these videos. And what he thinks
+Stuart Murray Good question. Whatever the answer is I just hope that when he dies he does so knowing that he was a legend in his own time. The man deserves that. Nintendo would not be Nintendo without him. Joy, dread, panic, sadness, hope... he has a way of expressing situations and emotions through song like sounds are a language that he himself created. A language that everyone fluently understands as soon as they hear it and most musicians dream to speak.
A beautiful sentiment, I agree wholeheartedly. Even as a kid with no musical objectivity, when his music played, I FELT it man, and I always will.
Sadly Koji Kondo is on that age when most of the things that other people create are not as good as "the good ol days of yore". The good part is that he seems to be really humble and really down to earth, I like his work. I don't like when people idolize him to the point of divinity, even he doesn't like that according to his interviews.
My uncle works at Nintendo and he says Koji watches them all the time.
@@WigglestheMoose Is your dad also Bill Gates?
I refuse to believe these god blessed hands are not on a piano today. Best wishes for Tom!
The composition of this video is brilliant: you've got Tom's hands well-displayed, as well as the reaction of a single observer who perfectly represents the joy inspired by his performance. Tom is a true Smilecraft!
That's Will Perkins in the green shirt. He'll be returning from a two-year mission in Argentina soon. Just before he left, I had heard him do a cool stride rendition of the Legend of Zelda theme. Maybe I can capture him playing it this year if he gets it back under his fingers.

i don’t think anyone understands the sheer amount of skill you need to pull this off
I never realized the roots from the smb3 overworld theme in this until now. truly a gifted man if he can reveal such subtleties while sight reading
+Lee Godinez Well, it's just in the music, and when you take away differences in orchestration such similarities are more easily heard by the listener.
+Keeper1st you should tell him to sight read the legend of zelda game over theme :P
You mean this? ruclips.net/video/vhRBGCS8mlc/видео.html
I don't hear the similarities, can you explain further
Aside from the first couple of chords in the "bridge" parts of both of the songs, there are no significant similarities
I can't believe how old these videos are now.

Eyes on my tears
Tell me the dude at least saw the piece for 2 mins... I mean seriously how does one sight read AND add their own stuff to this kind of piece under 2 mins?! That is some wicked skill you have right there.
+Jeremy Ng Just like how a jazz musician reads a lead sheet or fake book. He reads enough of the score to get the melody and the chord sequence, and fleshes it out from there. Of course, he's been doing it for over 35 years, so he's become rather good at it.
Amazing... I'm just blown away XD
The keyword is practice. ;)
When I'm old and gray and come back to RUclips 40 years from now, I'm going to come back to this & feel the exact same levels of pure joy and happiness I always feel when I watch this.

Apart from this gent being able to play this from sight, one of the other things that blows my mind is how quickly he gets back on track if he does make a wee mistake here or there. He just plays on without a break in his flow at all it's amazing.
Of all Tom's video game songs, this one might be the best. It's certainly debatable, but this is an amazing version of this song.
