@@Conundroy Well yes, there's no question that ragtime derived from African-Americans messing with European quadrilles and schottisches, which certainly would have been played in the "Old West" along with popular operatic numbers. But ragtime is certainly distinct and not at all "western".

The way he not only played it so quickly and well due to his ability to sight read...but then he went on to literally improvise for a long time without any major mess ups or pauses...I'm completely baffled by this level of talent!
All those mistakes in the beginning might seem to point against his skill, but remember, he's never heard the tune to know what his mistakes are. That being said, he still recognizes them fine, which means that he can "hear" the song just by reading the paper, and knows when what he playing doesn't match up. His mistakes make his musicality even more impressive
He also showed that he could've easily learned both the hands separately and put them together, but claimed "that's cheating" and still powered through the hard way with both hands. Plus, any musician likes a challenge. He would probably have delighted in having a piece to challenge his sight reading skills.

This guy was amazing, in just a few minutes he sightread nyan fucking cat, played it perfectly and made it sound like it belonged in the backround of a saloon. Sadly Tom Brier suffered an accident and can no longer speak or play.
I came for the nyan cat, I left absolutely awestruck at how moved I was for a freaking sight read piece that was phenomenal. Send my congratulations to Tom!
Can we talk about how actually rare that is. Like just a few people can sight-read like that. Sight-reading is one of the hardest things u can learn as a musician
I hope he has recovered fully. I still come back here from time to time, brings me joy to see him play. Now that I have kids of my own, I let them watch the master in action.
The Japanese translations are brilliant. They’re puns involving “nya” or the meow sound. Instead of saying “chotto matte kudasai” which means “please wait a moment” they said “chotto nyatte kudasai” which would me like saying “please wait a meowment” haha
If u come to japan u will see this all over the place in literally every sentence in an anime center. I don’t know what to call it in English but a lot of Japanese kids use this as a joke. :) but this is pretty cool ngl
I just can't wrap my head around how incredible his talent is. Three or four minutes of "ouch, he's making some mistakes" right to six uninterrupted minutes of riffing on the same short tune in constantly unique ways. Breathtaking. I hope Tom is doing well, and thank you Keeper for sharing him.

It's enlightening. I almost fell asleep, it sounded so good. And I'm the type of person that would be able to stay up until 4 in the morning doing absolutely nothing. And this somehow quelled my mind
Someone walks up to and gives you a piece of paper with lines and symbols that aren’t words or numbers. They tell you it’s for a song you’ve never heard before, please play it. As it turns out not only can you perfectly and let’s be honest, decipher the paper and its squiggles and play the song as it goes, again even though you’ve never heard it before and that’s before we get to the part where you are so familiar with the entirety of music as well that you are able to remix and build off the tune in a way that sounds almost like it was always intended for you to finish it. That’s who this guy is.
I've been playing piano for 9 years and study it at university, and I feel qualified to say that this man is ABSOLUTELY legendary. I hope his health can improve one day.
@Jaycja he got into an accident and can no longer play if i remember correctly. It happened years ago, so i can not remember correctly. Though he is fine, he cant talk nor play anymore.
@@yellowpancake7968 what's worse is that it's highly suspected by his close friends, the ones who recorded the videos of his playing, that his family are purposefully keeping him from recovering for what we can only assume is the money provided by insurance. There's a few videos made by Tom's friends about his situation and the unfortunate inability to do anything to help him.
It's really fun watching him sort of construct the song in his head, and then just turning it into a playground. Of the people I know who play piano, he's definitely my favourite.
Trash About Almost Everything I don’t know if that’s true. I Googled him and it didn’t say anything about his death; I found a Reddit thread talking about his slow (but sure) recovery from fall of last year. I think (and hope) that he’s fine.
Cristobal Garces No. They are the same pitches (on a piano), but they aren’t the same _notes_ if that makes sense. They imply different things in the music
@@littlefishbigmountain I meant on a piano, they are the same. And for most instruments. But for the actual frequency value, they are different. When playing, I read flats better than sharps. Probably because of the way I was taught.
Not that ragtime is swung much, though novelty piano is, which is what Vincent’s arrangement was meant to be. Even the original composer of the tune plays it with swing, actually.
I don't think people really realize how INSANE this guy is. He literally looks at it and is already able to play like the first measure. LITERALLY A SECOND. AND HE'S ALREADY GOT THE RHYTHM. The rest is just him feeling the song out, and then he just goes off on his own to create a masterpiece. This guy is literally a legend. And these chords aren't common chords at all, with decent jumps with the left hand. And he just read all of that so fast. I would sell my emotions to get this good.
This is an absolutely insane skill. He learned the song and he slowly adapted it to himself, he literally consumed the Nyan Cat. Nyan Cat became a piece of him. Nyan Cat became one with his divine art.
Its beacusse the somg its hard its not intended to be played by any actual instrument its a synthesizer instrument midi wherein its computerized and not played by instrument
The fact that he studies the chords just long enough to say "alright that's enough of that" and go off into his own thing that STILL SOUNDS LIKE NYAN CAT is absolutely mind-blowing. This is why I love jazz. Edit: Guess this would be considered ragtime. Thanks guys
I love how he takes a minute to practice it as if the complex melody actually impresses him for a moment, before he jumps right into it with little interruption
it’s hard to watch this video knowing of the accident he was in and the recovery he’s been going through after so long, he’s such a talented man and never should have been hit by the truck

I forget that there are people who don't know how to read music... I spent so long learning it (and sometimes adhd decides to go brr and I keep on reading the wrong line as the wrong note even after 8 years) and music is such a big part of my life at this point that it would be weird not having it
Sheet music are magic scrolls and playing music is casting spells

The guy in the video is so talented. I appreciate the memories he helped me remember.
Memes aside, this song sounds really classy in piano form and would just fit in a wild west bar as normal.
No it wouldn't. This is late ragtime / early jazz -- about 30 years too late stylistically.
@@Keeper1st True, but I suspect ragtime must have drawn some inspiration from those oldies, seeing how the 1920s and late 1800s aren't so far apart. That's just my guess, I'm absolutely clueless about music history, I'm just very fond of Brier's talent.
@@Conundroy Well yes, there's no question that ragtime derived from African-Americans messing with European quadrilles and schottisches, which certainly would have been played in the "Old West" along with popular operatic numbers. But ragtime is certainly distinct and not at all "western".

@Jessica Chann Imho,I believe that its because you have to focus on both your hands, without the aid of any kind of muscle memory. (sorry I don't know much about piano)
They’re more an indicator of the weirdness of the chords and melody
@@oldvlognewtricks yeah actually he struggled more with this than just about anything else I've seen him sightread
He also showed that he could've easily learned both the hands separately and put them together, but claimed "that's cheating" and still powered through the hard way with both hands.
Plus, any musician likes a challenge. He would probably have delighted in having a piece to challenge his sight reading skills.
