Has anyone ever told you, “Stand up straight!” or scolded you for slouching at a family dinner? Comments like that might be annoying-but they’re not wrong. Your posture is the foundation for every movement your body makes and can determine how well your body adapts to the stresses on it. Murat Dalkilinç gives the pros of good posture.

One motivating factor for keeping good posture = you look much better.
I've always had bad posture up until two years ago. After seeing myself in candid photos with poor posture, I realized I looked like a flamingo or the Hunchback of Notre Dame. Haha. Good posture is an easy way to make you appear taller and healthier. Your upper body looks stronger and your tummy looks slimmer when you have good posture.

@@hardishah3442 Yoga or ballet is great for good posture, since it brings things into alignment, including the 'posture muscles', which are rarely used in the average persons daily life. Many sports encourage good posture, except for weight lifting (if done wrong, it can actually make your posture worse, but done right, it can be great) :) You can also search for 'how to improve your posture' or 'how to fix hunchback posture' on google or youtube; there are plenty of good exercises. Just remember it is not just about working out shoulders and arms; it is often the back muscles that are lacking in modern people. And just try to be aware of it in your daily life, and correct yourself when you notice it.

In yoga moving and settling into the Asana (the poses) is initiated from the spine towards the outer ends of the body, and there is emphasis on the correct anatomical alignment in order to support and relax the spine. Most of the health benefits linked to yoga poses come forth from having full mobility in the spine and experiencing decreased stress on the central nervous system within the spine. If you would like to practice better posture, you can go to a physical therapist, an ergonomical therapist, and/or you can visit a local yoga studio and ask for the classes that focus the most on the correct alignment of the poses. I hope I was of service 😊🙏🏻

the problem is when you go 5+ years with bad posture your muscles may already be in so much pain and be so Weak that you need physical therapy.
in my case when I was 15 I was told by my doctor my posture would effect me. by 22 my shoulder was hurting at work, when I did art commissions, and even when I walked. at 23, I'm taking physical therapy because the muscles in my shoulder are so tense and can rip at any time.

you have tense muscles pulling you forward into the bad posture, you need to stretch them all, safely ofc, and then they will loosen up and it will be easier to then practice the good posture. It takes A LOT OF TIME, I've been doing stretches and working out back muscles for 3 years and it's still hard.

Cash Rabbit i play violin and one of the key points is to always sit up straight and maintain a good posture for long periods of time. (Since my practice hours tend to be 2 hours long.) trust me i had so much trouble keeping my body straight forward but after long periods of time, it gets easier to maintain and stay in. I can stay for about an hour and 30 minutes before needing to sulk back down in my seat. I know that seems like nothing but imagine doing that each day for about 2 years straight. Its really great! You need to make good posture a habit to never lose because the benefits are definitely great

    • @brainrat1617

Well, mostly lower back pain which can get real bad if you are sitting all day. You can even get headaches from all that tension. If you are persistent and sit up straight whenever you notice you are slouching, eventually it will become natural to you and you wont have to think about it anymore

I've been struggling with keeping good posture. About 20 times a day I adjust the way I sit, but before I even realise it I'm slouching again. Who has tips for improving your posture?

    • @NigraXXL
      @NigraXXL 9 лет назад +120

Charlie Noah slouching has become a habit for you. What you could do is apply some habit changing techniques that will be useful for this and any number of bad habits you might have. I am no expert in the field, but what has worked for me was to try and stay as continualy aware as possible so that you can correct the slouching while it's happening. If you have trouble with self-awareness you could try to set a timer in your smartphone to ring or vibrate each 5/10 mins as a reminder to check your posture.
The more you do it, the less you're gonna need it and after some time it's gonna become your new habit to sit/stand up straight,

Don't use the back of the chair if it has one. Sit upright at the front of the chair, using a cushion it it's uncomfortable. Make sure the chair is high enough so that your thighs are flat when sitting, or even higher so that your hips are a bit above your knees. A firm wedge cushion can help tilt your hips slightly forward, which promotes proper posture.
And if you're looking at a computer monitor, raise the monitor so the top is level with your eyes when sitting, and about an arms length away. If you're using a laptop for long periods, don't, or get an external monitor that can be put at the proper height. Not so sure about reading from books...
Most "office chairs", even the $1000+ "ergonomic" ones, are terrible for posture. Any chair that slants back, forcing your hips to tilt backward it also to be avoided. Couches that put your knees above your hips and the back several feet in: worst invention ever for posture unless you can sit cross legged on one.
Better yet, get a good kneeling chair. I got one about 7 years ago and swear by them. Most of the time I don't even use the knee pads and just keep my feet on the floor. Sitting upright is just the natural thing to do with these chairs. I used to have back and shoulder problems, but now my sitting does not cause problems even when I sometimes sit 10 hours a day, and I have excellent posture. Even when I sit on "regular" chairs now I sit as described above out of habit, and find it way more comfortable.

codediporpal This is without a doubt one of the most helpful responds I've received on RUclips. Thank you for taking the time! I'm sitting at the front of my chair as we speak. I've never heard of a kneeling chair, but did some online research and now I'm very intrigued! Going to try some in a store later this week to see if it the right height for my desk before I purchase one. The search continues but thanks to you I'm on the right track :)

I couldn’t stand up for hours and had to be taken to the doctor the next day. I remained a whole week during bed recovering and had to eat food in a very awkward and uncomfortable position because i couldn’t stand up straight effectively. Now a days i thankfully changed my habits and i do lots of exercise. I really do not wish what happened to me to anyone! It was scary.
