I love Asbach. I discovered it as a soldier in Germany in the late 70s and I've enjoyed it ever since. Wonderful stuff that goes down smooth and makes you wake up in a different town.
I saw that. Wisconsin Dells is just down the road from me, and seeing it on her sweatshirt threw me for a loop. Go Wisconsin! (I looked into it and, unfortunately, it appears to be illegal to send them some grand Wisconsin cheese to try. I'd love to see their faces after a 10-year cheddar.)
US Army guy stationed in Germany in the 80's, when the exchange rate was 3 Marks to 1 Dollar, Asbach & Colas were ordered by the tray load. It's the kind of drink that will "sneak up on ya".
Wisconsin drinks so much brandy that Korbel of California sells 1/3 of its world wide production here. Mostly SE Wisconsin. Good stuff. Top shelf. My favorite Irish whiskey is Bushmills 12 year.
One of my favorite bits of etymology: the word "brandy" is shortened from "brandywine." "Brand" is an old root meaning "burnt," referring to how it's made by using fire to distill wine. A brand is also used to mark cattle ownership, by using a hot branding iron to burn a symbol into the hide. By extension, a brand is any mark indicating ownership, and from there it has been extended to mean a mark or symbol of manufacture, and from there a product line of a particular company. So a product brand, say Honda, has something in common with brandy. @@isbjrn358 While I usually drink it straight, when I lived in Mainz and Wiesbaden in the early 90s Asbach and Cola was a common drink. I even toured their distillery in Rüdesheim. I have 5 bottles at home right now. Some 8yr and some 3yr. versions.
My mom and aunt used to drink apricot brandy and 7-up while they all played cards on the weekends. We always snuck sips of their drinks. Brandy is really good. I will get a brandy every once in awhile just for memories sake.
So many American military in Germany have tried Asbach. If you go to a bar in Germany it is usually a huge bottle turned upside down and the bartender will just push a glass into the opening and it will pour out. Huge bottle! When I was in the US Army we all tried it and drank shots of it with our beers. Great brandy.
I'm glad lolsy is back, the times she gets extremely drunk remind me of that aunt you had as a kid that wasn't actually your aunt she just came over to try your mom's brandy.
Gráinne, it's good to see Cork represented, even if it's "only" from Mallow. My family is from Midleton, but spread across the south, as far as Skibbereen in the west, and east to Dungarvan in Waterford. I don't think anyone in my family died where they were born. We must have gotten kicked out of more towns than any other family in the south of Ireland. Fair play.
I fell in love with Asbach when I was stationed in Bamberg, Germany during my time in the US Army. It's quite expensive here in the States, if you can find it. Many times, most liquor stores have to order it. Hence the high price tag. But it's worth every penny.
You MUST try the Laird's Applejack & brandy line from the oldest distillery in the US. Applejack is like an 80 proof whiskey made with apples. Next in line is the Straight Applejack 86 proof, made in the same way as pre-prohibition. After that is the 100 proof Straight Apple Brandy Bottled in Bond, then a variety of apple brandies, from 7-1/2 years to 12 years. I've had most and they are amazing. I wish I could send you some. For the Asbach it is very nice, but try it in a Rudesheim Kaffe. This is made with: three sugar cubes, a healthy shot of Asbach, which is then heated and set alight. Strong coffee is added, and the drink is then topped with a vanilla sugar sweetened cream and chocolate shavings. It is sinfully delicious. Ask for it in a German restaurant, you'll love it.
Brandy is a complex beverage, some alcohol like Vodka even the cheap crap can be drank with minimal difficulty. But Brandy and Regular Wine, either it's great or terrible. But when I find a good yet affordable Brandy it is fantastic.
At the beginning of *Dracula,* Jonathan Harker is picked up at the Borgo Pass by Dracula's coach - - the coachman (Dracula in disguise) tells Harker that there is a flask of Slivovitz under the seat if he desires a drink on the way to the castle. Cardenal Mendoza is one of the best of the Spanish brandies (which are made in Jerez de la Frontera, where Sherry is made); the other primo Spanish brandy is Lepanto. Having the Tryers try sherry sometime (or port) would be a good show. For sherry you go with Cream, Oloroso, Fino and Amontillado - - you can add a brandy if you need five instead of four.
The Asbach (uralt) is what the germans use in their version irish coffee (coffee with whipped cream, sugar (preferably brown crystals) and alcohol - dissolve sugar first, then cream, then alcohol)... obviously the spaniards do the same, but with a cheaper version than the one you tried here ;-)
Cardinal Mendoza is my favorite Brandy...it's like molasses' adult, but soft spoken cousin...the cardinal always says:" sit down, lets talk it over...have some of this, won't you"?
Brandewyn en Coke, it is to South Aficans what Guiness is to Irish people, it is our staple food. I think that we South Africans drink by far the most brandy in the world. We also make and love unaged brandy, we call it mampoer or witblits, depending what it was made from

Brandy is nice but is distilled just once. Cognac (in addition to being from a specific region in France) is distilled at least twice. Makes for a much smoother drink and more so with aging (a minimum of two years).
I always wondered what the difference was between brandy and cognac. Thank you so much for the clarification. But question…..which one lights on Fire fastest and burns longer?????
@@janetlykins295 If you are thinking of using it to flambé, you need at least 40% alcohol by volume (ABV). Brandy ranges between 40-65% ABV while cognac is 40-45% ABV. Other spirits used are rum, Cointreau, Grand Marnier and whisk(e)y. As for duration, I would imagine that has more to do with the surface area...the wider it is spread, the quicker it will burn off. Your choice of alcohol mostly resides in the flavor you wish to impart into your dish. Don't go too high with the ABV or you will have the fire department unexpectedly invited to your dinner.
Almost every brandy is stilled twice, difference is the manner of production. Cognac must be made in a specific region, from specific grapes, stilled with a specific still, rested on limousine or tronçois oak barrels for a specific amount of time making a VS, VSOP, XO or XXO, the whole production should be done in the region and many other rules. Brandy is way more widespread, you could make it from grapes, but also other fruits. You could lay it on wooden (any wood, not just oak) barrels or leave it clear. Ad sugar for instance. The used still could be basically any still. Cognac is brandy, but brandy isn't cognac. Calvados is brandy, but brandy isn't calvados. Time plays a role in softening a spirit, but so does the manner of production.
