It was fairly clear that maserati was going to get away rom the start. You could see it could out accelerate the trooper and it also would be unlikely to be limited to 155mph meaning the troopers car would hit its max around 145-150 whereas the Maserati could go up to 170-180. Sadly the troopers lost this one.

The closing speed of a vehicle travelling that fast is really hard to gauge if it was coming up behind you. I don't see any benefit for this officer doing so.
