This is the greatest western and one of the greatest movies of all time. We had moved from the Teton Valley Idaho in 1951 so when Shane came out it took us back home. I later became a wrangler at JLL not far from where to movie was filmed. My uncle had worked with the buckskin Palance rode and I guess he was kind of a bronc. Palance did well as did all the actors.

Hello Jeff Allen here again I lived in Jackson Hole in 1975 and 1976 I visited many of those cabins that you are showing us today enjoy the great shots you have taken today it brings back many memories a cowboy for the Jackson Hole cattle Association back in the Grove on basin is still amazing you bring history to where I had been and you have followed there is a place north of Jackson Hole where all of those cabins have been taken I wrote their many times and wished I had been in that movie call Shane I know many of the original settlers of Jackson Hole there is a squirrel type animal that lives there is actually called the chiseler when I was there in 1975 and 1976 most of those cabins are pretty well wasted away but they still bring back the history of the movie of Shane I used to ride in the Saturday Sunday and Monday Rodeo there in Jackson Hole add many great experiences in the Cowboy bar of people buying me drinks
Wonderful carefully crafted presentation Jeff and Sarah with so much Hollywood movie significance, since Shane is considered to be the greatest pre-eminent western movie ever made surpassing all others. I was always captivated by the beauty of the opening scene, depicting Shanes descent into the valley and his unsuspecting crossing of the Joe Starrett homestead leading to his magical encounter with little Joey. Who could have possibly guessed that this was shot on the Teton Pass Highway, at the Rest Stop to the left of the Howdy Stranger/Jackson Hole sign? A wonderful presentation as usual filled with such historical information on the making of Shane that's largely unavailable to us. In spite of it's occasional overlooked editing eccentricities such as the spotting of a distant car or truck, or Shane entering the Saloon by both the left and right swing door in the final scene, I think both the video and musical content of this magnificant Movie to be unsurpassed. Thank you so much for bringing us so much joy.
My neighbor is named Shenandoah, but everyone calls him Shane. One day he was leaving our yard and I called out "Shane, come back Shane". They all looked at me like I was nuts, but Shane laughed. Guess he'd heard it before. Thanks the scenery on this one is definitely gorgeous. 6800 feet by the way, wow.
This was one of the greatest Westerns of all time. I never get tired of watching this movie. Thanks for showing the location as it is today and where various action took place.
That was great, Shane is a magical film and the use of the mountains as a backdrop makes it special. It really does seem to epitomize the 'Wild West'. How nice that you went to such trouble to find the locations, makes me want to visit. The ending of the film gets me every time, a nice element of mystery around Shane's character. Westerns were very big here in England and they don't get any better than this one. Thanks Jeff, Andy.
I never get tired of watching "Shane", a great movie. Great video of you going to the location of the movie. I live in Bakersfield, Ca. and Jack Palance, lived in Tehachapi Ca., a few miles East of Bakersfield. I met Jack through a mutual friend of ours and I am honor to say that we became friends. I would often take my wife and kids to visit Jack at his ranch whenever he was not filming. You, could not tell by looking at him that he was a very nice man. My kids loved him, couldn't wait to go visit him at his ranch and get to ride one or two of his ponies. Through Jack I got to meet Ben Johnson, who also happen to be a very nice man. Again, Jeff and Sarah too thank you for your video.
Thank you my friend! We also live in the Central Valley. Of course you saw I met Ben Johnson, who was a nice man. Few stars actually wind up in this part of California but I recently lived Elisha Cook lived in Bishop! Go figure! Jack Palance, I heard, was a private man so you are fortunate for having met him!
Thank you, for your respond to my comment. Yes, Jack was a very private man, why he took a liking to me I do not know. But, I am still honor to call him a friend. I also met character actor Charles Napier, after he moved to Bakersfield from Tehachapi Ca., We used to get together and have coffee in the morning when he was not filming. As an Actor myself I can say proudly that I have met many famous Actors, Sam Elliot, Henry Darrow ( Monolito on High Chaparral, Santa Barbara NBC Soap, and many other films.) All of the big named stars and not so big named stars I have met all been very nice with the fans and just plain folks. To this day I do not know why I was so blessed to have either worked or met them and they took a liking to me. Some of the scenes for Thelma and Louis was filmed her in Bakersfield, Ca. My daughter wanted to meet Brad Pitt so I got her 2 days work as an extra and she got to meet Brad and he invited her to have lunch with him on location. Man, what a guy he was. I am so happy he finally won an Academy Award.
California Gal oh my goodness! You made my day! Thank you! I am honored that you would watch my videos. I was just telling Sarah about your comment. What a blessing. More are in the works!
An excellent movie that will never in my personal opinion be forgotten. After the years of watching this movie I could believe that Shane was Joey’s farther and Marian was the girl who Shane left to pursue his place in the civil war. Upon his return he found she had made a life with a good man and he didn’t belong any longer. The tension between both Shane and Marion shows in the movie even big Joe knows the truth deep down. Maybe just my over thinking brain but I believe it only adds to the magic of the story. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and showing us the beautiful scenery.
George Cochran: I accidentally came across this piece by Jeff and thoroughly enjoyed it. "Shane" is certainly one of the finest westerns and most beautifully filmed I have seen until "One-Eyed Jacks" was released. You interest in putting yourself and your partner through some physical effort to revisit this incredible location and share it with us certainly is appreciated. Be blessed!
Shane was my dad and I's favorite movie. I was born in 1953. I enjoyed your narration. it was informative. you should have your wife watch the movie? its one thing to see where it was filmed, but watching this classic movie ties it all together. Shocked to hear little " Joey" killed in car crash in 1972 at 29 years old. Pretty sad. Thanks for sharing.
Sarah, after watching Shane again, last night and this morning, I came here specifically to ask you to give it a view. The animals and children in the movie are precious, Brandon deWilde's character is just adorable! You'll love it! It's Hollywood gold for sure.
Best movie ever! I watch it several times a year. So being you’re from CA, I’m impressed you got off the pavement and went out on antelope flats on foot without bear spray, a 44 magnum and a pickup truck full of cowboys with carbines as guides. That herd you saw watching you ‘at attention’ was most likely antelope if they were very light colored, or cattle if dark colored. Moose don’t herd up that time of year, Bison don’t watch people like that and elk and deer usually aren’t out in that sort of habitat that time of year. There is an occasional grizzly around out there periodically. You didn’t find the hole of Torreys grave, but it is there, so are some ruins of the townsite including a slight road through the townsite. That wire you found is at the site of the homesite. A number of scenes were shot from the sides of hills that are known as the Blacktail Hills between Mormon row and the Tetons.
Just spectacular! America had the western expansion like no other place. We have our own rich history here, and lots of western movies to document it. Splendid job! Thx!
I never know there was a movie made in Wyoming by the Tetons, I love the Tetons. Well I wasn’t born yet and didn’t grow up in Wyoming. Love watching your videos.
So very interesting as Shane has always been one of my favorite movies. I first saw it when I was 8 years old. My grandparents were homesteaders in Montana near Big Sandy. I loved the music from the film as well. Victor Young was the composer.😅
Can’t thank you enough for all of your videos particularly in California. We left our California home in in Lemoore in 2005 and miss it every day. Your videos from gold country remind us of our many trips through there. Thank you again!
Melinda Beck that’s very heart warming! Thank you for letting us know you like them! Sarah and I just went through Lemoore last week and I couldn’t believe how much it had grown since I was last there in the mid 1970s. We’re always looking for ideas if you have them! Stay safe!
@@jbenziggy I was stationed there in the mid-seventies. I loved the valley! So much to see and do! Loved the Superior Dairy in Hanford! My daughter ended up there as her husband was stationed there also in the early 2000s. Two of my grandkids were born in Lemoore on the base.
Shane... Shane... Come back... I love You, Shane, We Love You, Shane. one of the Greatest movies and story ever told.. still my #1 favorite western movie after more than 50yrs. I own this film and have watched this movie and 'The Proud Rebel' more than I care to admit. Never gets old. 'Jubal' was also filmed, if I'm not mistaken in Wyoming Grand Tetons. Glenn Ford and Ernie Borgnine Also a Great Movie. Thank You kindly for the tour. Much appreciation for doing what you're both doing. Safe Travels and I look forward to seeing more soon.
Great reporting jeff. You've got a natural flair and empathy for the subject ( in this case Shane). It was the very first movie I ever saw in a fleapit cinema in Dunstable England in 1953. I was 5 years old. My elder brother took me. My family lived in a caravan ( trailer for Americans). I've seen a few reruns of Shane over many years but that first time always stays vivid in my mind. Shane got the bad guys and must surely be every little boys hero. He was my hero then and still is now even though I'm now a 74 year old little boy. Well done Jeff.
I liked the movie Shane, the shots of filming in Wyoming, one of my favorite states in America. Those Grand Teton mountains, remind me so much of the Alps in Italy, France, and Austria! The mountain men who came through as they hunted and explored, called them Teton's, (reminded them of women's breast). Wyoming is my favorite state, and the site of the movie Shane! Shot 70 some yrs ago!
This is cool. Thanks. Love Shane, one of the very best American Westerns. Cowboys didn't come much cooler than the villainous Jack Palance in this classic.
Carl Rees Thank you so much for letting me know that you enjoyed this show. We shot it back in June and it was fun to do. I hope that I can count on you becoming my newest subscriber as I try to reach 1000. It would help energize me to do many more videos in the coming days.
Been there! In 2018 and actually stumbled on to this cabin but didn’t realize until yesterday what it was! Went inside it and was fascinated. I knew it was an old homesteader cabin. Gorgeous view too!
As far as the Starrett homestead, there is a flood gate on that canal, perhaps you didn't go far enough, and then the homestead site was about 500 feet further down the canal. 20 years ago there were still some boards out in the area but they are pretty much gone now. I usually walk out there alone and I feel like I can sense the presence of Alan Ladd, Jean Arther, Van Heflin and Brandon deWilde while I am there.
Jeff dear You are a Very sentimental informed Historian. I bawled my head off the first time I saw Shane in the 1960s. My best friends sons name is Shane. My late husband met Brandon DeWinter sometime in the 1960s. Always watched his subsequent movies. Glad Sarah loves this place. Sometimes I think she would rather be somewhere else!LOL BUT WHO WOULDN'T fall in love with that VIEW. GORGEOUS! OUR COUNTRY IS SO WONDERFUL! I PRAY THE PEOPLE START JUST TRAVELING TO SOOTH ANGER? , AND VISIT AMERICAS BEAUTIFUL PLACES THAT BELONG TO ALL OF US! THANKS FOR THE TRIP!💜
This is deja-vu for me because I worked for the Park Service in Grand Teton on the trail crew in the 70s, although not in the part of the park where Shane was filmed. Interesting tidbits of information from the IMDB site. Jack Palance had little, if any, experience riding horses before filming. In the scene where they bury Stonewall, the dog's owner is in the grave below the coffin calling the dog, which is why the dog is looking so intently in the grave. They shot some of the scenes with strong telephoto lenses, which made the mountains look closer to the buildings than they really are. Alan Ladd at 5'5" was much shorter than Van Heflin who was about 6' tall. Anyway thanks for the interesting video! Grand Teton Park will always have a special meaning for me due to my time on the Death Valley trail crew there. BTW those squirrels your wife mentioned are Uinta Ground Squirrels, they are all over the valley part of the park.
AAH!! REMEMBER " SHANE " GREAT MOVIE & STORY LINE. ALAN LADD WAS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE'S -- IN THE HOLLYWOOD ARENA . THANKS FOR THE HISTORY HUNTERS FROM U.K (2022).
My Dad bought a 400 acre ranch in Selma, Oregon in 1963. Every thing was there from the early 1900 to about 1920. All the old buildings like the ones on your program were in there. Lots of antique photographs were found every where as I cut up old logs for fire wood.
Very interesting, Shane is my favorite movie. when i was in 3rd std I read the book. I liked it very much and saw Shane as my idol. Not knowing that there is a film based on that book. I saw movie when i was 19 year old. My childhood memories are around Shane. very happy to join you Shane lovers.
Shane has been a film I have loved ever since I first saw it as a young lad at the local picture theatre in the early 50's. I have seen many times on TV and I also have the DVD of it. I have never ever failed to enjoy it. I have been a western fan since my very early years but this film holds a special place with me. I believe the gunfight scene towards the end between the Shane, Wilson and Ryker characters to be one of the best gunfight scenes ever filmed.
Hello 👋 my friend, I enjoyed your video at least one year ago so I had to watch it again. I saw the movie SHANE in 1955. It's my all time favorite movie. Please keep up your great work. 🤗
Thank you so much for the film location of Shane . I'm 64 and came to know about this movie few years ago, I've seen clips of this movie on RUclips. Beautiful location and landscape.Would like to see more. Thanks again. Salisbury Park, Pune, India.
Jeff & Sarah, great video! Shane is my favorite western and that of my late father and my siblings. The Western Writers Association also consider it the best western film ever made. One note: The production dates were from late-July to mid-October 1951. The New York opening was not until 23 April 1953, and the Los Angeles opening was 4 June 1953. The producer-director George Stevens took a long time editing the film, plus Paramount decided to blow up the negative to fit the new Cinemascope widescreen aspect ratio. It washed out some of the color, but Shane won the Oscar for Best Cinematography! Keep up the good work -- I'm subscribed!

Shane is my favorite movie I’ve been wanting to see the Grand Tetons since I first seen the movie and Spencer’s Mountain in the 60s when I was very young my wife and I just spent our 41 year anniversary in the Tetons for the first time we love the Tetons and the Movie thanks so much for showing places of where the great movie was filmed you did great job with the video.
Wow!! At the 7minute mark of this video, the shot you took of the Grand Tetons has got to be the most beautiful scene I have ever seen in your shows. Thanks so much for your creativity on filming this show. I know I am 3 years late at watching this, but I am glad that I ran into it. Made my day! I took several screen captures of this show because of the pure beauty. Your creativity constantly amazes me. Take care!😃😃😃
I was out there in that valley looking for signs of the movie Shane about 20 years ago. I found an abandoned cabin along with a couple of smaller structures nearby. They all look to be of that time and resembled the "Ernie Wright" cabin. Watching the movie and comparing the mountain background with the photos I have of those structures, I had to have been very close to the Starrett cabin though I am lead to believe they probably were not actually in the movie. A case of close but no cigar.
Mark Sprague Who are you addressing that question to, Jeff or Sarah? As I explained in the video I saw it when I was a teenager in the late 70s. I was born in 1961 and Shane came out in 1953. Sorry never saw it in the theater.

The backdrop to the opening shot of this video had Shane movie written all over it. Outstanding!
Kowboy USA comments like this are a pleasure to read! Thank you very much!
Couldn't agree more! Thanks so much for watching and we do hope you like us enough to subscribe!
I never get tired of watching "Shane", a great movie.
Great video of you going to the location of the movie.
I live in Bakersfield, Ca. and Jack Palance, lived in Tehachapi Ca.,
a few miles East of Bakersfield.
I met Jack through a mutual friend of ours and I am honor to say that we became friends.
I would often take my wife and kids to visit Jack at his ranch whenever he was not
filming.
You, could not tell by looking at him that he was a very nice man.
My kids loved him, couldn't wait to go visit him at his ranch and get
to ride one or two of his ponies.
Yes, Jack was a very private
man, why he took a liking to me I do not
know. But, I am still honor to call him a
friend.
I also met character actor Charles Napier,
after he moved to Bakersfield from Tehachapi Ca.,
We used to get together and have coffee
in the morning when he was not filming.
As an Actor myself I can say proudly that
I have met many famous Actors, Sam Elliot, Henry Darrow ( Monolito on High
Chaparral, Santa Barbara NBC Soap,
and many other films.)
All of the big named stars and not so big
named stars I have met all been very nice with the fans and just plain folks.
To this day I do not know why I was so
blessed to have either worked or met
them and they took a liking to me.
Some of the scenes for Thelma and
Louis was filmed her in Bakersfield,
Ca.
My daughter wanted to meet Brad Pitt
so I got her 2 days work as an extra and
she got to meet Brad and he invited her
to have lunch with him on location.
Man, what a guy he was.
I am so happy he finally won an Academy
Award.
My husband and I always enjoy your videos. I even have my Mom who is 94 watching them now. She really enjoyed them!
I have watched Shane many times over. Amazing movie. Nice trip to make.
Thank you, Kenny.
Just spectacular! America had the western expansion like no other place. We have our own rich history here, and lots of western movies to document it. Splendid job! Thx!
Thanks Walter!
I see the Tetons from my house. They never cease to amaze me!
Lucky dude! Are you on the Idaho side?
@@jbenziggy Yes…Rexburg/Salem Idaho
I never know there was a movie made in Wyoming by the Tetons, I love the Tetons. Well I wasn’t born yet and didn’t grow up in Wyoming. Love watching your videos.
Thank you, Mary! Nice to read your comment this fine Thursday! Glad you're enjoying our videos!
It’s definitely one of the most scenic areas of this country that we have enjoyed. I’m glad that you liked and appreciated this episode.

Thanks! I appreciate it!!!
I love Sarah's take on the " blow-y" flowers ! I totally believe that to Sarah !!! Thanx for the GREAT video . My dad loved the movie "Shane" !
I wish I had been there with you, I'm 67 years old as of this post and Shane is one of my favorite movies of all time, not just westerns
Shane is a great western! We're glad that you could be with us in video form! Have you made it to that location ever?
History Hunters I’ve never been there but I live in Eastern Washington so it’s close enough I hope to someday
I watched. A fond memory comes back. The unforgettable cinema.
You guys have an awesome show! Thank you!
Thanks James! I appreciate it! I don’t understand why I got a lot of thumbs down on this one.
Sometimes I think she would rather be somewhere else!LOL
BUT WHO WOULDN'T fall in love with that VIEW. GORGEOUS! OUR COUNTRY IS SO WONDERFUL! I PRAY THE PEOPLE START JUST TRAVELING TO SOOTH ANGER? , AND VISIT AMERICAS BEAUTIFUL PLACES THAT BELONG TO ALL OF US! THANKS FOR THE TRIP!💜
I was in awe of my surroundings. I wanted to be nowhere else.
I can see Sarah keeps you on your toes! Beautiful Country. Another Home Run, Thank You.
I remember the film, the place is a paradise on earth..

Thank you for the nice compliment! And for watching!
I watched that movie as a kid. I love how you are able to bring life to the scenes.
My all time favorite western movie and one of my all time favorite movies! Thank you so much for this video!
What impressed me also in the movie was the light.
I love Wyoming.
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for joining our subscribers! And thanks for the glowing review! We appreciate it!

Much thanks, excellent video. I"m an old timer that was raised on the magic of this masterpiece, its music, always voted by critics in the top ten films of all time, its gorgeous visuals, the brilliant script, charisma of Alan Ladd, the amazing debut of Jack Palance, the entire cast so perfect. so much more. , ,but whats with your friend, so totally insensitive to all you are doing, unbelievable ! Not just guys like westerns!
Insensitive huh? Interesting perspective.... Thanks for watching!

Thanks for your humor and casualness in your adventures in SHANE country…a movie I saw when I was 6 years old that I remember for its Western Scenery and a former gunslinger who rids the world of a couple of bad guys! Thanks again!

I just watched Shane on TV and had to get another look at your video again. Yep ! I love it
Saw this picture in 1954 at the Bensham cinema in Gateshead, UK with my Dad. Nice to see the location but a long way to travel for me now.
The garden wasn't at Ernie Wrights place, it was at Starretts homestead, and they came through the garden in two different scenes.

'Shane' was actually filmed between July and October, 1951 (not 1952 as you say), but for some reason, wasn't released by Paramount until 1953.

From Ireland. I first saw Shane in 1954. I was 10 yrs old. Oh I cried and I cried, when the little boy Joey kept calling Shane to come back.😥. So sad Brandon lost his life so young. Lord have mercy on his sweet Soul. 🙏☘️

Shane is my number one western movie :)
I don't know how you could have been a kid in the 60's and not have seen or know about Shane.
Mark Sprague Who are you addressing that question to, Jeff or Sarah? As I explained in the video I saw it when I was a teenager in the late 70s. I was born in 1961 and Shane came out in 1953. Sorry never saw it in the theater.
Wow! What beautiful scenery!
