One of the best things about “The Birds” is the lack of an explanation. It just IS. These days, every movie plot has to have a contrived explanation. Far creepier with the reasons unknown. One of my all-time favorites.
Sorry for my English. Your point is more or less true... The Zeit of the script and the general concepts of the personages admit the existence of some kind of explanation and simultaneously the protagonists assume the existence of some degree of mystery together with their radical ignorance about the stuff (say, "aggressive group of multi species birds"). Old and good films admit doubt and their casts deeply admit the verisimilitude of their roles and actions. Old films talk about reality -- they don't rely on the pseudo reality of artificial graphics and pre programmed games of life, they are not simulations in a simulation. For instance, that old American ornithologist (a lady) proclaims the supposed impossibility of such strain of birds (the seagulls) behavior but 40 minutes later she was totally pale and confined in a room of Tides Restaurant (If I remember well) in a typical scene extracted from the (theatrical) mute realist cinema of German and Russian silent films (Eisenstein, Lang films) and so she needs a deep explanation to understand not the birds but herself and her errors about what reality really is !! It is impressive because it shows us that people in some moment in time are themselves only because that same people believe the universe supposedly is a well known whole (including me, a bit part of that whole). 2 yrs late to the conversation, but I totally agree. Same thing with the 1960's The Haunting versus its remake in the 1990s. As for Hitchcock's movies like The Birds, Rear Window, North by Northwest, Vertigo, etc, something about them give a nostalgic feel about 1950's-1960's SF/NoCal, NYC, the Pacific Northwest. Although those movies are very mannered in a soundstage sort of way, I miss that in today's era of overly slick CGI & hip, no-mystique realism. Unless the property burned down or was bulldozed, I wonder why Michael didn't show where Mitch Brenner's house is? I doubt it was instead on Universal's backlot & must have really existed in Bodega Bay. As for the scenes in the small restaurant & of the town, they gave a friendly, relatable vibe to NoCal---psycho birds notwithstanding. lol
I grew up in Sonoma County California. Santa Rosa, Rohnert Park, and Bodega Bay. In fact, years ago the former owners of the School house turned it into a cafe and museum but that's been gone for a long time. Last time I was visiting home it was under new ownership and closed off to the public. I miss Bodega Bay. I live in Astoria Oregon now.🎩🌊
Same here, I was a kid when I saw that… and that scene freaked me out a lot. The fact that there was no music during this scene, made it feel so real. Plus Hitchcock used things that made us feel safe. He was found dead, killed by birds, inside of his home, with a pajamas on.

Great video you guys. My buddy and I were road trippin' in 2004. We stopped in Bodega Bay for coffee and I saw a poster of "The Birds" on the wall. I told the employee, "that's so cool". He told us THIS is the town where they shot the film... WOW....so we stopped at school house. Was a great town to stumble on...LOL......thanks for the memory.
He liked to make cameos in his movies and other shows. I saw him get off a stage coach that had just arrived in Dodge City at the beginning of a “Gunsmoke” episode. Didn’t say a word, just got off the stage as a passenger and walked by the camera into town, not to be seen again in that episode.
He said one time that his fans expect a cameo from him, so he likes to do it towards the beginning of his films to "get it out of the way" and the audience can focus on the story.
People that are really good at something make it look easy. Thank you for the work on this. During corona times, you guys allow many of us to see classic locations we usually would not be able to.
Dude, the motion pictures cinematography you guys put together keeps getting better and better! You were so right on your live stream last night about this great idea.
What a fun video. Flailing her arms while wearing that over-sized, black top as she ran down the street, Jessica looked like she was playing both parts-the panicking kids running down the street and the crows attacking them.
Excellent video! I love Bodega Bay. Tippi Hedron used to go back every year and visit. The restaurant has great views when seated at the windows like that. You can watch sea otters playing in the bay. Happy Anniversary!!
I am originally from Petaluma not far from Bodega Bay. Weekends were spent “abaloning” in the area and was the only beach in which I played! The original Tides was my husband’s and mine favorite restaurant and we would always stop for cracked crab dinner! It is also the first ocean our son ever saw! Thanks for taking me back to pleasant memories. Salt water taffy used be a big hit in a little store there. Was last there in 1974 when all the original buildings were still standing.
Dan & I used to live in bay area and would drive to the area quite frequently. His brother lives right near Bodega Bay - always one of the fave spots to visit. I have been outside that schoolhouse many, many times.
Jessica rocked her reenactment of the kids running from the school. Perfect! 😁 The drone footage was beautiful in a truly ethereal manner. What a stunning location for filming. Hitchcock had one hell of an eye. Also, huge congratulations on your 4th wedding anniversary. You guys are a true inspiration.
cool cool review of the birds filming locations. brings back many memories for me. i spent the summer of 1975 up in bodega bay with a friend and wound up working at the original tides restaurant as a dishwasher. even then everyone talked about the movie the birds but i had never seen it (this was way before vhs, dvd, or internet streaming). i'll never forget that summer.
“The things I do because I love you.” 💕 I remember watching this movie when I was about 13 years old. Classic! Thank you Michael. Love the way you narrate your stories and Jessica re-enacts. You and Jessica are very loved and appreciated.
My grandmother's uncle, Mitch Zankich, owned the original Tides Restaurant, and appears briefly in the film. According to family lore, the character of "Mitch" was named after him as part of the deal to film at the restaurant, lol. I've never been to Bodega Bay myself, and now I'm really itching to go!
@@vegetariansuniteworldwide8091 At about the 27:07 mark in THE BIRDS, after Rod Taylor helps Tippi Hendren out of the boat following the gull attack, they pass a dockhand who says, "What happened, Mitch?" He was the dockhand, lol. My guess is that they replaced his voice with an actor's, since his back was mostly to camera.
Many years ago a clairvoyant friend of mine looked at me intensely and told me the reason she liked me: "you stumble beautifully" she said. I fantasized for years that someone would do a video about filming locations for this film. Unbidden and unannounced, this video turns up in my feed this morning. So feeling the love right now. Thank you.
Great video as always!Happy belated anniversary .I loved Jessicas reinactment of the children andTippy Hedron running down the street to escape the birds. a classic performance!!
I like this movie, way far better than The Exorcist, which literally scared the hell out of me, and I do not want to ever see it again, especially because a scene depicted a oijua board which I am VERY DEATHLY SCARED OF! 😱 Speaking of oijua boards, I had a peculiarly scary dream @ a new neighbor who had just moved in nextdoor to me borrowing one of those freaky things from some close relative of theirs. In this dream, when these new "weirdo" neighbors leaned the board up against their door, it just all of a sudden slammed against the ground in the hallway and split perfectly into two after I stepped out my door, followed by light grey smoke eerily smouldering from the broken pieces as I stood just frozen in a trance-like state in fear
Great channel!! I was driving up the coast with a friend for a wedding and we stopped to grab some munch and crunch. It was Bodego Bay!! They had BIRDS postcards everywhere.
I asked my husband about the 3-step zoom towards Mr. Fawcett's pecked out eyes and he said that the original shot wasn't as grisly as what is shown in the final cut. Hitchcock had Albert Whitlock, who did the matte paintings, add more blood in post. Amazing!
That 3 step zoom was done in Frankenstein in 1931 and my scariest scene in Exorcist 3 with the grim reaper in a mental hospital. I remember crying and screaming maybe because I worked in a forensic state hospital that was haunted.
Thank you for the tour. I always wanted to see Bodega Bay but never had a chance too. My father has been there though. I will show him this video and see if he recognizes it.😊
Great video. There are other ones that cover the filming locations of the Birds, but yours is by far the best. None of the other ones showed where the dock was and the fawcett farm. When I was a kid ,we on a family vacation to Bodega Bay a few months after production wrapped. We ate in the original Tides restaurant. They had photographs and autographs from the film. And the staff was happy to talk about it. We saw all the locations, including the schoolhouse. I still remember a lot from it. Went back a couple of more times after that. One of my favorite places. The cast and crew actually ate there as well.
I wish I had known about your Chanel sooner. I'm a huge Hitchcock fan and I own all of his movies even the silent ones. Magazines and Mystery Books. I just can't get enough which is funny because as a kid, I'd leave the room whenever he was on screen. Thanks to you and your lovely wife for this Adventure. I'd love to see the location shots for North By Northwest.

3:34 On the right, the man with glasses and the long gray coat is part of the production team. He is kindly asking two women to not walk across the street, so that Tippi can walk across alone. The second women needs additional persuasion.
I used to work in schools as a teaching assistant, and remember once hearing a class singing Risseldy Rosseldy, just like in The Birds. It was very eerie!

No birds were harmed during the filming of this episode. Thanks for this presentation, I have been to the state park at Bodega Bay but never the town. It would be cool to find out the process and intensity of work being the bird wrangler for Hitch’s film. Happy anniversary to you both.

People that are really good at something make it look easy. Thank you for the work on this. During corona times, you guys allow many of us to see classic locations we usually would not be able to.
Dude, the motion pictures cinematography you guys put together keeps getting better and better! You were so right on your live stream last night about this great idea.
Agree
Happy Anniversary!
What a fun video. Flailing her arms while wearing that over-sized, black top as she ran down the street, Jessica looked like she was playing both parts-the panicking kids running down the street and the crows attacking them.
I live in N CA and never been to Bodega Bay. I need to go see it now after this ! Thanks for showing us this!!! ❤
Excellent video! I love Bodega Bay. Tippi Hedron used to go back every year and visit. The restaurant has great views when seated at the windows like that. You can watch sea otters playing in the bay. Happy Anniversary!!
Thank you. Love that movie. Still scary nearly 60 years on.
Don't remind me. I was born in '63.
Congratulations on your anniversary and a great job documenting these filming locations.
Perfect! 😁
The drone footage was beautiful in a truly ethereal manner.
The Birds is my favorite movie of all time, and I always wanted to visit Bodega Bay. Through your great video, I feel like I have. Thank you so much!
One of my cult favourites, love Alfred Hitchcock.. thanks Grimm 🖤🐦⬛
Can you tell us where he shows up in the movie? Thanks!
Best line in the whole movie. "Vengeance is mine sayeth the Lord!"
Thank you.
"The things I do because I love you" - that earned a like lol
"OH, look. There's birds" just cracked me up!
IKR?! Timing is everything, lol!
The Birds: "IT WAS JUST A MOVIE. WE COME IN PEACE."😊🐦🐦🐦🐦
Geeze, that scene @8.58 where Melanie is smoking-it was so absolutely brilliant the way that it was done. Filmmaking at its finest!
Great video as always!Happy belated anniversary .I loved Jessicas reinactment of the children andTippy Hedron running down the street to escape the birds. a classic performance!!
this movie is really great..i need to watch it again.
I Remember watching this movie as a kid scared me badly. Thanks for airing this.😨💙
This was always a fave childhood movie, and it's so fascinating to see the locations today, great video once again! 💙
I like this movie, way far better than The Exorcist, which literally scared the hell out of me, and I do not want to ever see it again, especially because a scene depicted a oijua board which I am
VERY DEATHLY SCARED OF!
I remember watching for the first time in 70s as a kid. Brilliant film.
I had the fortune to visit most of these sights about 10 years ago. Loved it ! I also love all of your posts !
Thank you for the tour.
I always wanted to see Bodega Bay but never had a chance too.
My father has been there though.
I will show him this video and see if he recognizes it.😊
Tippy was drop dead gorgeous!
OMG, you guys are sitting at the exact table I sit at when I eat there. Been going to Bodega since about 1969. The Tides has the BEST FOOD!
I love this film. Was great to see where it was filmed
Been there it very cool to visit. We fell in love with that area. Great Edition !!!!
I haven’t seen this movie in a long time so good to see this
I love "The Birds". This video was great. Thanks for posting and Happy Anniversary.
Love “The Tides” restaurant...such a neat place to eat!😀
Very expensive. There are several other restaurants up Highway One.
It's okay... but not one bit like the greasy spoon in the movie.
I love this movie. Its one of my favourite movies. I love the Alfred hitchcock movies.
Always great, to revisit classic
movie locations, years, even
decades later. Thanks, for
putting this together!
More Hitchcock is coming
North by Northwest is my all time favorite Hitchcock movie. Hope they do an on location for it too.
Y’all are so sweet! Yes Jessica needs an Oscar for her wonderful acting!
You guys are killing it with your videos. They have reached a new level of great since you got to California. Really well done and congratulations on your subscriber milestone!
You blow me away..right on point with the scene. I'm a San Francisco Native born & raised, thank you for your time & commitment!
She named her daughter Melanie after her character in this film ,Melanie Griffith
I didn't know that... So cool!
@@anneholden9908 yep lil HOLLYWOOD triva facts lol
@@natalieangelo54 think it was the other way around. Named her character after her daughter.
@@kalallenxx43 yes, her daughter was born in 1957, and the film was 1963.
My mom liked the name Melanie from this movie and Gone with the Wind. So she named me Melanie. 🙂
Jessica i just loved the way you ran down the street . You are both taking me back in time the first time i seen the movie. Thank You.
The Birds! The school looks the same! Tippi Hendren is Melanie Griffiths mom and Dakota Johnsons grandma, pretty cool! I heard somewhere that Alfred Hitchcock was obsessed with Tippi, not sure where or if it's true...Thanks guys Happy Anniversary 🖤 Happy Mother's Day to all also!💕
It is true. They made a movie about it. Tried to ruin her career. I think Sienna Miller played her & Toby Jones played Hitch. Btw, the school house is haunted 👻 saw it on that old show Sightings!
@@samanthab1923 Thanks for the info I'd like to see that! Yep he tried to ruin her career, wow... I remember " Sightings" lol now you can't get in unfortunately maybe after covid? IDK
it is True, she said it in a interview, google it and you can also see the interview of her saying that Alfred Hitchcock use to give Melanie her kid Dolls so he can get the Mother, real Horney son of a Bitch!!!!!!
Ironically, Tippi's characters name is Melanie.
Yes yr right I read that Hitchcock was obsessed with Tipi too, he had a hidden room made somewhere apparently where he used to force Tipi to meet him, poor girl !! She was not interested at all !! Today that would be called sexual harrasment..how awful !
I loved this grimmlifecollective! Very cool. Too bad you can't go in the school house, it is an awesome building. The movie was filmed the same year I was born and just up the road from me.
This was so much fun. That’s one of my favorite movies and you guys did a fantastic job of showcasing all the locations. Love this❣️🙏🏻
I enjoyed this after watching the movie this afternoon!
This video is another awesome example of California locations I grew up in California I really miss it but its to expensive to return thank you for sharing 😀 super cute when the little boy whistles at tippy she was an icon 😊
Thank you, for visiting Bodega Bay. I went there in 1972 for a visit because of the movie and, luckily, at that time, most of the buildings were still intact.
Whenever the birds fell up on you while lining up the water shot, it was like if Alfred Hitchcock sent them to make this video more incredible, man 😍🤘🏽😍😍😍🥰😍
I'm 50 and have never seen The Birds. Seen more in this video than my entire life. Thanks..
Worth the watch ~ still a great movie!
OMG this movie SCARRED me. Lol No joke, I don’t mess with birds. Well done Hitchcock. Also well done was the drone work in the fog.✨
It scared me too at the age of 7 when I saw it with my parents and aunt , uncle, and 7 year old cousin. He was scared too. (Jan Griffiths).
At the end of June 2011 my wife and I traveled here and it was such a magical place. The weather was cool and we even went to the Bodega Bay area I was shocked as it didn't seem as large as what I thought it would be. The area is just so beautiful. Well done thank you so much.
HITCHCOCK would be proud!
I saw a glass painting showing the birds before they attack the town. Boy that was cool to see how they filmed that sceen
Great! One of my favorite places. I saw the birds on my eighth birthday at the Reseda (yes, that Reseda) Theater thanks to their Birthday Club.
I'm a little late on this one. But I live 20 mins away from Bodega I can't believe I missed you guys
There were no (or very few) trees to the left of the schoolhouse in 1962, and now the trees are fully grown.
Hard to believe that it's been 60 years.
Correct. The playground was to the left of the school.
You guys are the best! Love your reenactments! For a very short time the school house was open to the public they had a Museum in a small room on the main floor and we were able to check it out😊 we have spent lots of time in that area and love it and The Birds are one of my favorite Hitchcock movies. Also we were able to meet Tippi Hedren for a autograph signing at the Tides and she was lovely! 💜
Big bear hug guys ❤ I visited Bodega Bay in 2018. Took pics outside school house that is now converted into private residence. This is so nostalgic. Did you guys film on location at the 1970's The Fog? And filming locations of Duel would be way cool. You guys have the life. I know it ain't easy, but it better than being a typical office clog.
I love the before and after shots!
I am so glad that I stumbled across your post! I LOVE "The Birds." Your take on this classic 👌 is so-o-o-o spot-on. You should have been a movie 🎬 director. You have made an already much loved classic even more enjoyable and understandable an experience. And I love the way you two love and respect each other. Keep up the good work.
Thank you Peter. Happy you enjoyed it
Guys have a cozy cool life traveling to these locations and teaching film history. Makes me want to revisit all of these films you cover. Happy belated anniversary.
Been trying for hours to piece together The Birds old locations & here you've done it perfectly! Thank you for doing the work! I love the "lay overs" & "insertions". Sad how such a pretty town & surrounding landscape was lost to fire and what was replaced less than aesthetic :( They call that "progress", I call it "ruination". BTW, that shot with the flock of Birds appearing was a million $ one! lol - what are the odds? Thanks again for sharing this!
No birds were harmed during the filming of this episode. Thanks for this presentation, I have been to the state park at Bodega Bay but never the town. It would be cool to find out the process and intensity of work being the bird wrangler for Hitch’s film. Happy anniversary to you both.
OMG this was one of mine and my mom's favorite movies I can't watch it no more but still a great movie
My moms to I love it too.😊✌
Deke, why's that, you can't watch this movie?
@@staceyking7911 it was my mother's favorite movie I can't watch it no more cos memories
watching here from Brazil 🇧🇷
I freaking LOVE Grimm-life!! This was so EXCITING to watch. You lined the film shots perfectly! It was so classic seeing the birds fly across the old dock scene and Michael's "Go Away"😂..and your "Tides" lunch..so romantic! You have an incredible marriage!!❤ Those t-shirts looked awesome..did you get one or any memorabilia? I'll be watching this video MANY times!! Thank you for sharing your journey..Safe Travels Grimm!! ❤❤❤
Really enjoyed this. Love the scene of baby ghoul running down the road? Hilarious!
