- If you have ever been down to the Florida Keys for the opening of lobster season, then you know how passionate people get for catching lobster.
(And for any of you northerners, these are "Spiny Lobster", not the Maine or New England lobster you might be used to seeing.)
Anglers from all of over the state and beyond travel down to the warm and clear waters of the Florida Keys for lobster season because it's the best place in the southern US for catching lobster in a family environment.
The reason for this is because in the Keys, there are tons of lobster in the 3 to 10 ft depth range so anyone who can somewhat hold their breath and swim has a shot at catching them.
And the added bonus is that their tails are delicious... my personal favorite is butterflying the tails and grilling them... yum!
Although these Florida lobster frequent shallow water, they can still be tricky to catch for a novice diver, so we put this video together to show exactly how to catch lobster with a net and tickle stick.

Very helpful. Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!
Great video using the tickle-stick! Your filming and instruction are very good - also, mad props for getting that spotted flounder - bet that dinner was awesome!!!
FYI - Look for local laws to include glove usage since some places or countries don't allow that (eg - you can be fined). As far as gloves go, you could spend $35-60, BUT I have used a pair of $4.99 ones from 7-11 for a couple of years :) They have blue fingers and palms covered with some sort of rubberized material and the rest is a heavy mesh. If/when they rip or start to really stink, just pitch them :)
EXCELLENT COURSE! THANKS
Thanks for the info. Especially the ones about knots. Those helped me a lot
Yakin'SC My pleasure! Thanks for leaving the nice comment. Hope to hear from you again soon on another video. Fish On!
Great video! I'm interested in going with the family but how do I choose a location?
Good video. Thanks for doing this. I'm getting ready to retire in port Charlotte area and I love lobster. So I'm going to do a few trips to the keys.
+Rick George Our pleasure Rick! We absolutely love fishing in Charlotte Harbor... best of luck to you out there. Fish On!
I live in MA but am going on sabbatical soon. I can't think of anything more refreshing than catching lobster like in your video. Here's my question: WHERE in the Florida Keys can I go to catch them? Is this the right time of the year? And do I need a license? Thanks for any help you can provide!
Thanks for the info.
Yer having too much fun down there Wes
Fantastic! too easy now!
I have been wanting to lobster for many years and not quite sure where to start. Are there dive operators in the Keys that can take you out to these places? We just came back from Key Largo and I really don't feel like towing my boat back down for a weekend of lobstering. I'd appreciate any advice you can give me.
what kind of gloves where you using
Looks very easy with the tickle stick and the net. We catch East Coast Rock Lobster (Crayfish) here in South Africa while freediving, but have to use our hands as it is illegal to use any other form of apparatus to catch them. Thanks for the cool video.
+Glynn Kent Yes, catching them with hands is certainly more difficult (I only do that when one gets backed up into a corner and won't come out with the tickle stick).
How and where do you hold the lobster? I’ve caught them before, just not sure on how to hold them in the net.
Hi, Thank you for your informative video. My Wife and I were curious if you offer private guided instruction for your Lobster Catching Skills. Plz let me know. Thank you, Tim
Sooo cool!!
Sir please can you help me? In September I am going down to big pine key for camping and fish and try to do some lobstering for the very first time in my life. Where are some good places to go for snorkeling for lobsters?
Any recommendation for the gloves?
Is IT legal to catch them i am going to Florida soon so i was wondering ID i could catch some aswell?
Lobster season in FL typically extends from August to March (with a 2 day mini-season in July). Here's a link to the official rules for lobster in FL: myfwc.com/fishing/saltwater/recreational/lobster/
Does the tickle stick have to have that bend at the end? A lot of then I'm seeing are straight.
Its pretty helpful when the lobster is in a weird spot
Hey, where in the keys did u go lobster diving and what's a good charter to use? Thx
Where, as in what reef, on which Key??
All structures in Florida are rich in lobster
Cool !
Nice tks
Heading to keys any good spots is a boat necessary?
Yes boat is necessary but you could get lucky with a few small lobsters on rock banks right next shore
Best spot is off the coast of key west
Do you ever use scuba to catch them?
Three Swords I do not like to use scuba for lobstering because it's much less of a challenge. The act of catching lobster with a net and tickle stick described in this video of course applies to scuba diving too, but snorkeling is my preferred method.
To me it has always been easier to just flip the net over once the lobster is in. Thus, no need to grab or try to hold shut with tickle stick. You then can use your free hand also.
capnchip thay have learned better and will swim back out. You need to grab them to measure before they leave the water anyway.
Do you put them in a live well when back on boat
Robert Loehr you can most do as long as their legal size straight on ice
Is fort pierce, FL a good place for lobstering?
We would recommend checking with the local bait stores in that area.
I need to start doing this. Im paying too much just for one tail.
You made that look way to easy my dude. Damn they are so hard to catch when I go
Thanks!
So I'm going to the keys in a few weeks and want to try this. I have a lobster tag on my license, but have never tried it.
From what you show, I could do this- But I'm unfamiliar with trying to find "ledges". Is there other gear, besides a mask and snorkel, tickle stick, net and gloves that I would need?
Here's an article we put together that shows details on what is needed along with some more tips on how to catch them: www.saltstrong.com/articles/how-to-catch-lobster-in-the-fl-keys/
Hope you have a great trip!
My left ear thanks you.
Where are good spots in key west to do this?
Jason Rice anywhere with ledges for them to hide lobsters move at night so if your spot is empty today tomorrow it will some
where do you get a tickle stick?
You can get them at most tackle stores, online, etc
How deep where you here?
miamifamily4 The depth in this lobster video is about 10 ft.
I wanna do this soooo bad
Even better guide
Step 1 get pole spear
Step 2 spear lobster
Step 3 lobster Reuben
Practice makes perfect but you have to get out and try to catch them.
Tickle stick's are definitely safer too. Eels like to hang out in the same holes and crevices as lobsters, so if you go reaching your hand in blindly for a lobster you could be in for a pretty nasty surprise.
where is a good spot to dive when u have a John boat
+Shawn Phillips If you're down in the Keys, you'll have plenty of territory to search because the lobster often hold in shallow water on the Gulf side that is sheltered from big waves... just drag a friend around so they can look for structure or holes that hold lobster.
Save some for the rest of us...
Lobsters are so hideous and scary. Why would anyone want to touch that?
Ice Cream because they are tasty ?
