I've always loved the Waterworld OST. Dean Evans the composer also has music from a Green Lantern SNES game on his YT channel, I didn't even know it existed. The music, again, excellent.
I watched this specifically waiting for lagoon. I'll say it again. If nasir's sword was just a little bit longer, that game would have been a hit. And the music is absolutely outstanding.
Fun fact. The x68000 original used bump combat like the early Ys series. For some incomprehensible reason they changed it to a Zelda like slash on the snes and changed nothing else. So it feels just awful all around.
This made me incredibly nostalgic for the 90s. I put together a MASSIVE collection of midi music from pretty much every game we could find back then. It was like 80mb zipped. I thought Drakkhen had a great soundtrack. It was frustrating figuring out what to do but the great music in it helped subside my frustration a little.
Character creation music and warp songs are bangers, no joke. Hazhulkhen's castle is just... homg And just bask in the knowledge it's about a hundred times easier than the PC version, with overall faster HP regen, a merchant in the first area, shared jade, and you basically cannot pick a fight with the drakkhen lords before you are supposed to. Also you don't get instamurdered for going to the central strip on the island
Good point about great music helping subside frustration!! So many oldschool games I rented over and over even if they weren’t that good but the music was so awesome it helped elevate the overall quality of the game enough to play it often
Drakkhen was pure jank gameplay wise but I absolutely enjoyed the soundtrack and atmosphere. It has this somber fever dream like quality to it that no other game had on the SNES.
The wandering merchant music is some of the weirdest/most awesome music there ever was. It almost sounds like vocals, but not quite. It's truly the oddest track on the SNES.
Back in 2013, i bought a defective VirtualBoy with 13games... Includong the Super rare Waterworld... I had it refurbished, and i loved it to bits! Waterworld for virtual boy is the Jetski shooter game over and over and over, some kind of Asteroid, but with the first tune you played. I would play 20-30 minutes every once and then just to hear that beautiful soothing tune. I sold it for peanuts a couple years ago... I regret sourly! I got goosebump the whole episode Good job!
My first thought was that Lord of the Rings game, and lo and behold, THAT'S what you open with. My dad played the heck out of that one, though. There's probably still a graph paper notebook full of maps somewhere in his basement.
I think it's interesting how some people just love games that others think of as bad. For example I loved the SNES game "Out To Lunch." I even ended up buying it and still own the cartridge. There's just something so soothing to it.
Love this vid and love that you put the Waterworld soundtrack at the end. Like you mentioned, I’ve been listening to your videos featuring music for a long time and that one always caught my ear more than the others.
I was one of the programmers on lost vikings snes. IIRC, the fatman did the music for us (silicon & synapse at the time, now blizzard) but he was actually employed by Interplay.
Your music compilation videos have majorly influenced what I enjoy listening to when I just need to chill out and work. I play them often. I’ve even gone on to creating my own playlists with my favorites from your videos. Thank you for taking so much time to compile. It’s such a gift!
There’s something special in those songs that makes me feel warm-hearted even though I didn’t actually played those games. Maybe I listened too many times your 3 Hours of Relaxing SNES Music playlists and that mixed with some nostalgic songs I have on my memory. Great video!
Fabulous idea for a video! Great video game music in bad games is one of the greatest tragedies... thankfully we have the ability to enjoy the music all these years later without having to go through the trouble of playing the mediocre games
Your service is much aprecciated sr, your channel is amazing, really, for me, is like having back a cool cousin or older brother who know's a lot about awesome stuff and love to share it with the younger me a lot of years ago hahah
Love this idea. I feel like most content creators would be afraid to just have music play like this, but this is honestly right up my alley. This is what I’m looking for in entertainment. Great work, and thanks for sharing all this cool music and knowledge.
Part of my ego was nervous Plok would make it here for some reason, but what a fantastic video idea! Going to be streaming Waterworld’s OST to my heart’s content moving forward :D
Same. To call Plok a bad game simply isn't accurate - it's a very well-made platformer with one significant fatal flaw: the lack of a save battery. Heck, I'd be happy with even a password system... SOMETHING to save my progress. Apart from that, a solid platformer - with unquestionably a top 10 OST in the genre, maybe even the entire SNES library (depending on who's making the list).
Great to see Lagoon on this list. It really wasn't very good, but I still played it several times. Lots of great tracks, the opening and the elf field are two of my favorites. I also highly recommend the RPG Arcana for this list. Another not great one, but it has some absolutely fantastic music. Listen to the main opening theme, the main boss theme and especially the final boss theme and tell me I'm not right.
Tecmo Secret of the Stars is a game I rented and played soooooo often mainly because the soundtrack is exquisite!! Also you may say the overworld/town graphics are NES quality but man the battle sprites are so amazing!!
Hah, you know I clicked on this video mainly to see whether you'd remember to put J.R.R Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings vol. 1 on the list and where, because when I think of bad games with great music it's always the first one I think of. Even I didn't think you'd have it as the very first entry on the list, though!
Thank you for giving me more SPC700 material for future projects. The copyright police are less likely to show up for uploads of game soundtracks their rights holders may be ashamed of.
dude that waterworld soundtrack is just AMAZING like holy shit ; definitely instantly hooked me when i would listen to your OG music video yep , played that on loop at work for years XD
Thank you for making this video. I'm not sure why, but these songs, though I've never heard them before so have no nostalgia for them, took me to another world immediately
This was a great concept. Since it’s often that some great music gets passed over because the game they’re in isn’t any good. Plus it’s great that you credit the artists. On loads of social media posts these days people often don’t get credit for their work that gets passed around.
My ears prick up anytime someone mentions Hitoshi Sakimoto. He did the music for Genesis games like "Devilish", and his best musical scores are so atmospheric and riveting. Someone at Data East must have heard his work on "Verytex" and decided he was the right man to port the music from the Captain America arcade game to the Genesis.
Ahh LOTR, I still own that turd from childhood, in the box no less. Without the manual, the dungeons were hopeless. Great chiptunes that many would never hear without you good sir!
I wholeheartedly agree, SNES drunk. Just because you have a bad game doesn't mean that you can't enjoy its music. If anything, they are hidden gems of underrated soundtracks. I can also add The Lawnmower Man SNES soundtrack to your list. The game was nothing amazing, but man the music was insanely good.
This video is not on neither "All reviews" video. And it's unique video idea, I don't remember seen videos like this on YT :) edit: Dude, you saw my comment on Barbie video! Thanks for reading and thank you for making such great videos!
Secret of the Stars was one of my favorite games growing up, but all the criticisms are fair. The translation was definitely rough but I didn't mind the grind so much.
I miss the days of pulling up a game and just camping on the character select screen because the soundtrack just slaps. It probably helps that the barrier for entry was so low since it was a limited developer environment, but I stand by the philosophy that limiting the tools available is a boon to creativity. I'm weird though, I listen to more OST's than traditional music.
Lovely selection! Funnily enough, after Waterworld ended, RUclips took me directly, without ads, to a Goof Troop soundtrack video. I really did a double take at that moment!
Following the "Ocean-published movie licence game" trend, there's an unused track in the Flintstones game that has a similar vibe to the Waterworld music that I love.
As soon as I saw the title, I knew Lagoon was going to be mentioned. Amazing soundtrack, especially for a game that came so early in the SNES' life. I forced myself finish Lord of the Rings back in the day. Loved the overworld music, but since the last part of the game was all in caves, it got old real quick.
Funny thing about SNES Lagoon's soundtrack is that it's a vastly inferior bastardized version of the original X68000 soundtrack, but it's still great. It's just that good of a soundtrack. Highly recommend listening to the original version
One of your best ideas for a video yet. Thank you SNES Drunk.
I agree and hope there is more on the way!

Great video! I can't believe this video actually made me feel nostalgic for Secret of the Stars of all things :P
11:34 Getting serious Super Castlevania IV vibes here!
I hope this becomes a series, as from personal experiences there are a lot of options.
Hey thanks for saying that, check in tomorrow, there's more bad games with more great music
@@SNESdrunk thank u !! Please check out on Califórnia games on genesis and the bike lv someday, i grew up with that music in my Head hahaahaha
What? A mini review SNESDRUNK style and a soundtrack preview? Grest idea. I'm in!
That one early Mahjong game for N64 also had some radical boppers
Are you going to create a separate music complication for this??? I hope so! I love working/studying to your music playlists!
Damn. I thought for sure this week's video was going to be F-Zero 99. I would have lost bigtime on that bet.
Your the best snes drunk…great idea for a video hope there is more to come. Watched all the vids on the channel. One of the best on RUclips!!
I blame your channel for getting me into the Waterworld OST. God damn it's so good! ^^
Tecmo Secret of the Stars is a game I rented and played soooooo often mainly because the soundtrack is exquisite!! Also you may say the overworld/town graphics are NES quality but man the battle sprites are so amazing!!
It’s probably Stockholm syndrome but I loved that game
@@rootbeer_666 haha same! I knew deep down it wasn’t that great but I somehow have a deep love for it. Never actually finished it sadly
It was exactly the same for me! Saw the title of the video and was like "this has to have LOTR" - immediately wasn't disappointed 😂
Thank you for giving me more SPC700 material for future projects.
The copyright police are less likely to show up for uploads of game soundtracks their rights holders may be ashamed of.
Awesome video, can't get enough of 16-bit era music
Arthur and the Knights of Justice also has the most 80s banger of a cartoon theme. It's so insanely over the top.
I love GDleen since its first came out.Its the first turn-base RPG on Snes and the soundtracks were so good.
Heck yea broooother!
dude that waterworld soundtrack is just AMAZING like holy shit ; definitely instantly hooked me when i would listen to your OG music video yep , played that on loop at work for years XD
I always love your commentary and the video quality is top notch.
Super Widget had a great soundtrack for such a throwaway licensed title. I was legit surprised by it.
The first mahjong game tunes made me remember a bit of some Yuzo Koshiro tunes on the early SOR games or other works. Good stuff.
Great chiptunes that many would never hear without you good sir!
wow, this last game. what a great soundtrack. they really put a lot of love into the music!
Great idea, great video, thank you! Small correction: it's "Charles Deenen", not "Deneen"
SNES games have probably BEST water levels music all the time DAMN
Perfect idea for a video! Thanks for putting it together.
Fantastic video. Thanks for introducing me to some new old snes slappers.
This video is not on neither "All reviews" video.
And it's unique video idea, I don't remember seen videos like this on YT :)
edit: Dude, you saw my comment on Barbie video! Thanks for reading and thank you for making such great videos!
The Mahjong games hits hard. Thanks man
Secret of the Stars was one of my favorite games growing up, but all the criticisms are fair.
I'm weird though, I listen to more OST's than traditional music.
great vid! and this kind of music allways hits me right in the feels
Lovely selection! Funnily enough, after Waterworld ended, RUclips took me directly, without ads, to a Goof Troop soundtrack video. I really did a double take at that moment!
I was fully expecting "Spider-man and the X-men in Arcade's Revenge" to be in this video.
Great video, as always. But Drunk, no Spider-Man & X-Men in Arcades Revenge? Bad game, best snes sound track hands down!
My friend and I talk about this all the time. One of things that we could never figure out was the inverse of this. Good games with bad music.
Road Rash 2
arguably Streets of Rage 3
@@thecunninlynguist As a kid who would put SoR 2 in my Genesis just to play tracks in the sound test, I was shocked by how bad the music was in #3.
Following the "Ocean-published movie licence game" trend, there's an unused track in the Flintstones game that has a similar vibe to the Waterworld music that I love.
Videogame music is my favorite kind of genre. Great format you got there, you drunken bastard you!
"Diving" from Waterworld is such a great tune.
8:42 man, mahjong games definetly have the right vibes, awesome find as always!
two contenders for a second video like this:
Lawnmower Man and Xardion.
Funny thing about SNES Lagoon's soundtrack is that it's a vastly inferior bastardized version of the original X68000 soundtrack, but it's still great. It's just that good of a soundtrack. Highly recommend listening to the original version
water world music sounds like something you would have heard at around 2am watching Cinemax back in the day.. lol
