  • I have been after a shot of dream lake for nearly ten years. I have tried at LEAST 50 attempts and have always come back empty handed. Today, I finally get the conditions I want. Fresh snow, reflection in the foreground, soft light on the peaks. I can't say I have crossed it off my list, but I am closer than ever.

The light on the right side of the peaks, wow ! Worth the trip.

Definitely the best light I’ve had up there in quite some time. It’s a pretty incredible view

Great shots. It's always worth the adventure even if you don't get the shot you wanted.

You’re 100% correct. It’s all about getting out there and experiencing it

Thank you! The light is what made the scene, for sure.

There is no wind… just sideways snow haha. Funny you mention that tree. I have the exact one saved on my phone from a scouting trip there a couple years ago. Solid final image of the lake. Who knows, someday maybe I’ll run into you up there chasing the perfect conditions

Haha I’ll race you to getting an image of that tree! Might be June/July at this point. If you ever see somebody mumble cursing on their way to the location because they’re running late, it’s probably me.

Great video and images. RMNP is such a beautiful place. I would think it's worth seeing over and over regardless of whether or not you get your "white whale".

Terry, you’re completely right. I try and get up there once a month and no matter how often I go, it’s always an incredible experiences. It never gets old.

The final image was beautifully composed regardless of what you see as ‘the perfect composition’. Never having been there before, this image conveys a true sense of winter splendor...after all, isn’t that the point? Don’t beat yourself up, but never stop trying, either. Happy New Year...first time viewer.

Welcome to the channel! And thank you for the compliment. I am happy with the image. I think just after the hundreds of hours in trying to get “the shot” I’ll never be 100% satisfied. And I’m okay with that, because I love visiting this spot. Thank you for watching and commenting!

The dream lake photo is still a very well executed shot James, were it not for the clouds, the rest of the comp do was very solid, loved the reflection at the bottom too

Thank you, Edgar. I think this is one I’ll need to print to decide how I feel about it.

@@MrNegative sometimes printing the only way to really find out, or you can put it to the side for a week or so and then when you come back to it it's easier to know

I absolutely agree. Especially about stepping away and coming back to it

That is amazing shot and D3 wants to know how much better can it get?

Haha thank you. I would have liked a little less wind. A little less of the ice frozen, giving more reflection. A little more cloud on the right side to catch the warm light and balance the scene. And then if I were able to have less of the lake frozen, I’d have gotten lower to the ground. This would emphasize the foreground more. Because it’s really the texture in the snow and the reflection that excites me most about the image.
