Checking the clearance with the feeler gauge . . . you have to be the most conscientious auto mechanic I've even seen. You ought to be an aviation mechanic! Excellent work.
Like how you stepped all the way through diagnosis, repair and verification. I'm a DIYer and probably don't need a full-featured scan tool but the one you're using sure is attractive. I'll check it out.
Thanks for the video. I used dorman 14797 for my bushing. It doesn't need a clip. I just slid it on the shifter shaft and then snapped the cable loop in place with a little push.
How did the solenoid get burnt in the first place? I’m currently using a screwdriver and blew some electronics jumping the battery with the cables reversed ! Lol 😂 replacing the 140 amp ALT fuse now
Great info! This may be the issue on my 03 highlander but it only acts up in the coldest of cold weather so I am leaning towards the “shift interlock solenoid”. I was hoping you would tear into that in this video lol

Thank you very much for the very informative video and explanation. I have a Sienna 2006 and the exact scenarios have played on repeat. Will order the part tonight and get this resolved. Thanks again 👍🏽
I just uploaded a Video on a Kia Forte. It was stuck in park as well. But the electrical was all good, it was the screw that held shift lock solenoid which had loosened.
I have this problem, so I replaced the switch with a replacement from Rockauto. It still will intermittently stay stuck in park, so it wasn't the switch. What else will cause this problem? I think I'm going to leave it in neutral with the parking brake on until this is solved.
One helpful hint is that if you are in a 4 wheel drive vehicle and the brake activation switch causes you to be stranded, you can override the brake safety switch by putting the transfer case into neutral and, with the brakes on, you can then shift into drive gear. Only do this without vehicle movement or damage to the transfer case may result. You can then put the transfer case back into 2 or 4 wheel drive and the vehicle will drive until you can get to a safe place to have the vehicle repaired.
I love the way you explain things. One thing I would like to understand is, if the pcm sees the inputs and not commands the output, would you conclude that the pcm is faulty (good power and ground at pcm)?
Toyota sure made this otherwise simple task a lot harder, by making the mounting plate much larger, and restrictive, on the newer models. Excellent tutorial though, regardless.
Thanks Big Dog. I wish I werei n your neighborhood. My 2003 I4 MT5 snapped the passenger side axle today. Tight at than rubber damper!! Do I replace just that axle or do the driver's side too? 300 000 km on her.
Before you do anything… Try this… My situation was my brake lights worked but I was having trouble getting the stick shift out of park. I sprayed some WD-40 on that button at the bottom of the switch and that was what the problem was! The damn thing was stuck… That’s all it needed. May not fix it for you but it sure did for me! Certainly worth trying before you do anything else… Now if your brake lights won’t shut off that is something else probably. But it was an instant fix.
they do have a emergency button that you can push with a screwdriver or ain't pin right next to the shifter and an event that you have this problem with your vehicle it should have told the people that and the instruction video there is an emergency button you remove the cover it's a little tiny button right next to the shifter
My camry is having issues shifting out of park and into gear. I'm not sure if it's the shift interlock solenoid or the brake switch as i don't have a computer. If i push the shift override down with a small screwdriver it will shift into gear. I don't know if that narrows the problem down or not. I'd like to be able to fix this myself and not pay a shop $250 or more for something i could fix. I don't see any diy videos of someone replacing a shift lock solenoid.
That doesn't really narrow it down. If you don't have access to a full scan tool, I would try and get a hold of a code reader and see if there are any trouble codes to help give some direction. Something like this inexpensive code reader might help: amzn.to/31TBtqa
@@BigDog50001 I went to Autozone and they plugged their scan tool in and it didn't show any codes. It's strange. Because when you start the car it usually only has the (!) symbol but as soon as you start driving it the traction control, ABS, and brake symbol lights come on. I guess i'm going to have to take it to a dealership because Autozone's scan tool showed nothing. The car drives absolutely fine except for the shifter not going into gear without the override. It used to do that periodically when i first started the car but would come out of it within a few seconds. Then it just suddenly wouldn't go into a gear at all starting a few days ago. It's a 2012 Camry with only 92K miles.
@@AchillesWrath1 If it is lighting up like that, there should be some trouble codes stored. Sounds like codes may be in the ABS system or are manufacturer (Toyota) specific, in which case the car would need to be scanned with a better scan tool, one that can read that info.
@@idf543 Yes on mine it was the brake light switch. A local mechanic fixed it for $62. He told me it's either usually the shift interlock solenoid, brake light switch, or brake light fuse. Those are the 3 things it could be. Good luck.
My 1998 Corolla has a remote starter. That didn't work and the power windows/locks didn't work from the remote, but I was still able to start the car with the key, although neither worked from inside the car. The next day it was the same thing but now the gear shift indicator wouldn't shift into any gear. Hopefully this is the problem.
My 1994 toyota camry will not shut off with key out and its power died and I couldn't change the gears out of park while it was running at the time and now when I go to jump it off it acts like it's still cranked up and can't get it to jump off fully now and still can't turn car off
Generally you have to pay Toyota (or other companies) for service info like that. BBB industries used to proved fee wiring diagrams but I don't believe they do anymore.
Not always the case, many brake switches have two separate switches as a fail safe (like the one in this video), one side of the switch could be working and the other may not be.

In 3:39, So if the stop lamp switch is a problem do your brake lights work when you press on them at all?
