For over 10 years and your video it is still helping people. Very well done and easy to follow. I was in a restaurant at 11:00 pm when my car experienced this problem. Thanks to your video I was able to unlock the shifter in a few minutes and drive my car home. I repaired myself the next day again using your video. Thank you very much.
This is the BEST video on this topic. The dealer insisted I needed a whole new shifter and wanted to charge over 400$ but I watched this video and was able to fix it by getting that little part for about 12 bucks on Amazon. The only difference is I have a Chrysler 300 and in the bottom of the arm rest there are three bolts that need to be unscrewed because it wont allow for the shifter to come out without lifting the arm rest a little. Thanks for this video.
My husband had this problem today and thanks to your video, he fixed the problem by following every step. He was quoted $ 600-800 by the dealership and he spent $12 for that pink plastic part. My hats off to you Sir! God bless you!
Your video was the easiest and fastest, thank you! My cousin told me to have it towed to a shop that would charge me $200 just to look at it. A friend said he would do it but he was trying to find the time because he watched a video that required the entire console to be removed. With your video and the grace of GOD I did it myself. I struggled a bit because I didn't have the right tools but I have the right tools now. As a woman I really appreciate easy to follow car repair videos like yours. Thanks again for your awesomeness! 😍
I hope my comment arrives and you are in good health. God bless you! Thanks to your tutorial I was able to tow my boat again and take my wife on vacation. I was desperate. The lever was no longer moving and I was about to call the tow truck. Then, through an Italian forum, I came to your video. You are an angel, you saved my holidays. I hope all is well for you and your family !!! Grazie grazie grazie !!!
Thank you so freakin much! I was stuck 60 miles from home and I live in a foreign country. Your video allowed me to get home and get my car to a mechanic the next day!
I learned the hard way to take the ashtray seat warmer out. It simply pops out and there are three plugs on the back. It gives you a whole lot more room so you don't struggle too much. I am thankful to guys like this who make these videos which help save people tons of money and also give them hope that it isn't as bad as they might think.
Ya hear people say enough "words cannot express" how happy, how grateful, how pleased I am..Well if ya stop and think about that phrase, words are simply not powerful enough to emit your emotion to others...that's what it means..so words can't explain how much this vid saved my ass today...thank you so much.
Thanks you sir! you just saved me well over 250 bucks. for those of you that have a Chrysler 300, you have to remove 3 screws inside the bottom of the armrest compartment, slide it back, ( it doesn't have to come completely off) and lift up on it while you maneuver the shift control out. the replacement part will run you bought 10 to 12 bucks at the dealership.
Thanks for this video I a half ass backyard mechanic was able to do this job. Your way was the easiest of all I reasearched and no doubt you saved me alot of money. The Dodge dealership in St Louis Park sold me that part for $10 and thats all this repair cost me. Thank you
your video saved my wife today, she called frantic while she was out of town and her charger wouldnt shift out of park, your video let me talk her through it and get the car back home where i could work on it, thanks again !!
Thank you so much! It was a bit trickier getting the shifter out of a Chrysler 300, but all your steps were so clear and easy to follow. Part kit was $8.10 from Chrysler, who would have wanted $250 to do the work. Thanks again!!!
This is the simplest, fastest, and best explained video by far regarding this issue. We got it right away, followed each step slowly and fully paying attention. Little replacement was $15 at the dealership, and a little pick and hook set that we didn't have for $7. Thank you sooooooo much for taking the time to make this video the way you did!
My hat is off to you also!. I was stuck in the driveway blocking my other vehicle in the garage. My son and granddaughter are coming in on a plane and this car has to move. Thank you for your steady approach to the problem. I couldn't go to get a part so I made a patch using 4 rounds of small braided stainless steel wire. The wire is nylon coated, so I expect it to last much longer than the pink plastic. Did you see that one guy had found one made of billet aluminum... that's the permanent answer. Thanks again for saving the day!
What a chore this was today in my Charger R/T. My console that the shifter housing actually sets in isn't quite as open as the model in your vid so it was a JOB getting it in and out without taking apart the whole console. But, None-the-less, your video saved me BIG TIME! For that my man, cheers to you, sir.
This video was right on for the same issue I was having with my Chrysler 300, the gear shift was stuck in park. You even show the part number I needed to call Chrysler. I watched the video and had my husband pick up the part after work. He was able to take everything out watching your step by step video. I'm in business now all thanks to you, and it only cost $10.
My husbands car had this problem when he attempted to leave for work Friday. I posted on a local facebook page asking for recommendation for towing and mechanic. Someone asked what the problem was and year/make of car. (2006 magnum). He shared this video with me. So thankful to see this. Now to get the part and get it fixed - and not have to pay for towing and labor :)
I swear your FREAKIN awesome my boyfriend was able to fix my 05 magnum thanks to watching your video! I had watched a number of videos before I ran across yours and by far this was the easiest. Thank you :]
A man willing to watch the video with his woman and do the work to save money to spend somewhere else is a keeper and a blessing! I hope y'all are happily married together and continuing to work together! God Bless!
Thank you so much. After watching this video i went to dealer to see how much they would charge. The part was about $25 bucks but they wanted to charge me $240 bucks just to change it. I only bought the part, watched your video again, and performed the maintenance myself. Thank you for this video
Oh my GOSH! You are awesome! My son and I followed your video and fixed this in our Chrysler 300. The part cost $15 and saved me over $200 in mechanic cost. Thank you so much.
I suck at anything mechanical & after watching you do the fix i decided to try it! My 300 was stuck in park in my driveway. I went to the dealership & picked up the part ($14.00) & went home with my cellphone in hand & fixed my 300. Thank you for making & sharing this video.
Super helpful! Just fixed this part on my 05 Magnum. One suggestion I found that gives better access to the shiftier is removing the center console. At the bottom of the storage bin is 3 screws. Remove those and snap off the 2 sides at the front and it will slide out giving much better access to the screws and avoid scuffing anything else.
Awesome do-it-yourself video!!! My wife's car broke at 5:30am as she tried to go to work. I got it moving using a screwdriver to push back on the front pink part that has the spring. The spring appears to be missing. Until I have time to fix it next week, she can use the screwdriver to unlock the shifter. Thank you for taking the time to film and post this video. GREAT JOB!!!
thank you. this is a excellent video. I only spent $12 dollars for the part at dealership. you save me a lot of money. I would recommend this video to everyone who had the same problem. it now works fine. thank you again.
Thanks so much! I was worried about a huge repair bill. I got the latch in 2 days from Amazon, and the fix went just as you described.I really appreciate you posting this!
I have a 2008 Chrysler Pacifica but it's all basically the same. What I like about your video is you replace the part without taking the gear shifter knob off. I tried to unscrew mine to the left but it wouldn't budge and I was afraid I'd break it. With your method, you don't have to take it off. I bought the metal replacement piece instead of the plastic one and reused the old spring. Thanks for taking the time to post this video to RUclips.
I experience the same problem with my Dodge Magnum RT, several mechanics were saying that it could be my brakes, timing and other issues. none of them had no idea. When i came across this video it was a cash $$$ saving and easy to follow video to get the job done. Thank you.
The best self fixit I have seen. Had no idea my shifter was such a piece of plastic junk until now. Chrysler should fix this for free but I know I’m dreaming.
Thanks so much, I was able to follow this to repair my 2006 300 Touring Sedan!. One problem was getting the shift assembly out due to my model having a spring loaded cover for the double drink holder. I was able to maneuver it out only after removing the 3 screws inside the center console that hold it down, then raising the back end of the console to create a bit more space. I greatly appreciate this video tutorial. It is the best of many that I reviewed before starting.
Your instructions were on point. Im so happy i came across your video instead of paying a shop to do it. Only real problem i had was getting the shifter out of the space. I have an 06 charger and struggled for a while until i decided to take the console loose. It did the trick. Thanks !!
Thank you SO much!! Saved me hundreds of dollars taking it to the dealer. I too bought the metal one for $38.00 and it worked like a charm!! Have a great day!!
This was exactly what I needed. This was the exact problem I had and I really appreciated the step-by-step guidance and well-shot video. I had a little difficulty getting the rear end of the shifter out but a little joggling and flexing of the center console side panels did the trick. In my case I bought the replacement part from my local dealership for about $13.50 after tax. Great Job and thanks for posting.
Thanks for this thorough and helpful video, saved me hundreds of dollars and the part is only $17 on Amazon. Removing the shifter knob gives more room to replace the part. Pry the plastic oval trim at the base of the shift knob downward using a flat screwdriver, then unscrew the knob counter clockwise about 15 turns to remove the knob then you can completely remove the PRNDL plate and whole top cover. Took me about 90 minutes to do the job with my 13-year old son.
I know this video is many years old, but still very valid and current. I wanted to thank you for taking the time to film and explain this process, it saved me nearly $900 (Cad.). I worked like a charm for my '07 Charger SRT8. Again, thank you for this.
Got it done! It was much harder to get my shifter in and out of the housing, but it was still a money saving success. I fixed my Shift Interlock Latch with a cotter pin and two washers. Didn't even have to spring for another. Thanks!
Best video I've seen on the topic and I searched through quite a few until I found this one. Had no tools available but using this video I just made a makeshift screwdriver to get at the lever so I could disengage the lock manually. Super clear instructions and it got me back on the road home so I could actually make the repair. Much appreciated!! I'm a subscriber now and I'll let the ads run!
Thanks for a GREAT video. I broke down at my son's school. I had only a leatherman and a windows phone on me. I got it open and got it into drive and drove it home. Called the dealer to get the part. At first they had NO idea what part I needed. "The pink part on the bottom of the gear shifter..." I saw your part # and they had it for $8.43. Once again, can't thank you enough!
Thanx a million man! Your video saved me a very expensive visit to the dealer! I got the old plastic piece out and instead of buying a new one I modified the old one by drilling a hole through it where the hook broke off. Then I looped a solid piece of copper wire thru the hole, hooked the spring to it and it fixed that.
Thank you, yes it does help. I know the ads are sometimes annoying for all of us, but that is actually how my site can actually exist. Making these videos takes an enormous amount of time. I could never post these videos for free if it weren't for the ads. So, again, thanks for allowing them to run.
Very helpful & informative. Changed out the Shifter Interlock Lever today on my 2007 Charger. One modification added .10 wire to spring and wrapped in around lever to reinforce spring and lessen the tension on the plastic spring hook. Also removal of console was necessary to pull shifter; 3 bolts & 2 screws. One quick remedy to shift out park is to pull chrome trim piece, locate cable for the brake lockout, depress brake pedal, push cable to the left with a screwdriver pull shifter into gear.
hey you guys rock after me and my wife saw your video on how to fix ,we did our 300 that got stuck on park we thank you so much you help us to save money THANK YOU...
I love those swivel head snap on ratchets. They were one of the first tools I bought. Most auto repair is all about the attitude....you go at a vehicle with a positive attitude, you will be just fine. I'm slowly see more and more of these newer Chrysler vehicles come into my uncles shop, so i'll keep this repair in the back of my mind. Great video
The process works perfectly. I just fixed my son's 2007 Chrysler 300 and saved him about $350. You can also find an aftermarket replacement part online for about $20 that is made of metal. The one I bought is from Dorman and I got it on Amazon. Thanks for taking the time to make this video!
Thanks for making this video. Got in my car and the shifter wouldn't budge, I immediately went on RUclips, I KNEW someone would have a video, to get me on my way Thanks again
Thank you, RealFixes. With the help of your video, we were able to determine what was causing the shifter to lock up (Chr 300) as well as replace it ourselves.
I just wanted to thank you for posting this video. I did the replacement myself. The whole process took me about a hour and part to replace costs like 14 bucks.
Great directions, I wasn't able to buy the part but had to buy the whole shifter. Was going to cost 650 for the dealership to do it plus around 100 for towing it. Paid 200 for shifter and replaced it myself! Happened in the morning and fixed it the same day! Thanks!
Don’t know how to thank you you’re a life saver, I have a Dodge Charger and my develop the same problem watched your video and was able to repair it myself.
This way very simple. I replaced the plastic interlock for less than $30 on Amazon. I did get frustrated trying to put the shifter back in. I gave up and tried it the next day. I watched another video that showed some extra steps and was able to get it in easily. It was only 5 more screws to remove the console. Slipped right in. Thanks for this video.
thank you real fixes.....What a blessing you are. Thank you for saving me $450 dollars because the dealer claimed the WHOLE SHIFTER needed to be replaced...SURPRISED?
This video was a great help. I just changed the latch on my 300c here in the UK, replacing the pink plastic one for a metal one. I did it before it went bad; it would only happen at a really inconvenient time otherwise. As mentioned in other comments, I had to remove the three bolts under the arm rest and lift it to enable removal of the unit. Also I was advised to put a bit of lithium grease on the shaft before putting the metal one on. Many thanks.
my wife and i were stuck in the airport and this problem happened. it was going to cost $100.00 of dollars just to get it towed then another $100.00 just for the mechanic to "determine the problem." YOU SAVED US HUNDREDS OF DOLLAR THANK YOU!!!
Thank you for this extremely helpful video. My 07 Charger R/T experienced this problem about 2 weeks ago. Dodge quoted me 400+ to have it fixed. I find your video, paid Doge 12.00 for the interlock replacement kit and the whole process of removing the old and installing the new took me about 1 hour. MUCH APPRECIATED. You saved me money!
I appreciate your straight-forward direction on this fix. Other videos made it seem a bit more difficult, but following your method I was done in roughly a half hour. Thanks for this video.
A big THANK YOU coming from NorCal - while my unit did not come out (or back in) as easy in my '07 R/T as yours did in the video, I got the job done and it saved me gawd knows how many 100's of $.
Thanks for the great video. Just fixed my 2006 magnum. The Dodge dealership was going to make me by a whole new shifter $350-400. I found the metal replacement at the auto parts store and fixed it myself.
thank you, thank you, thank you!!!when I saw your video I was amazes at how simple this is. I had an appointment with the dealership to do this,it is going to be canceled! as im getting older I have to pick and choose what repairs to tackle. this video was such a tremendous help, cant thank you enough! part comming from amazon tomorrow,Charger should be back on the road good as new.
Thanks for the video. I watched it, then went to the Dodge dealer for the parts. I cost me $8.63. It saved me I would guess about $300. Good job. It took me about an hour to do it once I got the parts.
Oh my Gosh!!!! Thank you a million!!! I did this all by myself, it took a little longer for me because it was very difficult to pull the entire thing out & put it back in because of how the cup holder area on my Chrysler is made ... But a little more muscle, patience and sweet ... I did it!!! You saved me so much money!!!! Thank you again!!!
FYI: It only took me an hour! Even with having to fight with taking it out & putting it back in under the cup holder area. You are seriously a life saver! I needed a "win" after this week - and you provided that for me!
I'm a 66 yr. old female & doing my chrysler '07 300 today, but removing the shifter proved difficult for me, being female need more muscle. OMG, don't tell me its a chore putting it back in under that cup holder? I am worried about getting the holes over the screws & the rest into place, you got any secret you can share on how thats done easier? I had to give up for today, will finish it sunday. Just hope I can put it back in without breaking anything, That shifter Fits so tight!!
i have a 07 300c and i had to take the center console off... down in the compartment there are 3 bolts. take those off and up where that piece meets the dash( in front of shifter) there is a tab on either side. I feel your pain. we just did this today and there was no way it was coming out with the cup holder mechanism
I just want to say thank you!! I was able to fix my Charger following your video. You kept it simple and it didn’t take me long at all. Not to mention I saved some cash!! Thanks once again!!!
Thank you for your detailed explanation for fixing this shifter. At first I had my doubts about being able to do it but your video was so clear and thorough that it gave me the confidence to try. I’m glad I did. Problem solved!
This happened to my 11 year old Charger today. I stopped off at a store to buy a scratch ticket and when back out to my car and the shifter would only stay in Park. I called AAA and the guy who arrived knew exactly what the problem was. He put a screw driver down inside so I could get it into drive and he followed me to my mechanic. I don't know how readily available that front pink switch is but hopefully it will only be 1 hr of labor involved. Thanks for explaining everything so well. I didn't realize there was so much going on under that shifter cover !
Thank you! This happened for the first time tonight as we're trying to get home after a long Christmas with family, and we just wanted to get home. This helped tremendously!
I own a Chrysler 300. This video is really great. It took me about 45 minutes to replace the pink lever. The new lever is white cost $7 at dealer. I did have to loosen the box directly behind the shift which has screws to remove the gear shift.
Own a 2005 Chrysler 300 3.5 automatic. I replaced the pink shift interlock latch, spring, and brake safety switch. I did get some relief for a short period of time and then within a month or so the same problem with shifter sticking in park came back. I found out that the real problem (from a mechanic at a transmission shop) is a faulty shift interlock solenoid located inside the gear shift assembly box. As in the video this is the box mechanic takes out of car. I decided to replace the whole gear shift assembly box since the solenoid itself is close to $100 bucks brand new and the gear shift assembly box is around $180. Now, not only does it never stick in park, it rapidly moves out of park without even a second of hesitation. The mechanic told me he replaced hundreds of the boxes over the years.
Many many thanks, I had just this problem on my Chrysler 300C. Bought the right part and had it fixed in about one hour and the part cost just £6.96. Super!
Thank you I was able to repair my 07 Chrysler 300 It was the holiday weekend so all dealerships were closed so I couldn't get the white upgraded part so I went to u-pullit and found the upgraded part in a old Chrysler gear shift took it apart instead of just changing out the whole gear shift due to it had cosmetic issues installed in my original gear shift and it works perfectly I can express enough my gratitude
I personally want to thank you for this video. Because of you I save some money and I was able to fix my car my self. GREAT GREAT VIDEO EVERYTHING WAS PERFECT THAT YOU SAID AND DID IN THE VIDEO. ONCE AGAIN I THANK YOU FOR THE VIDEO AND GREAT VIDEO
Thank u for the help, fixed mine today, worst part was getting the shifter out and getting it back in. Found taking ashtray out helped alot. Tight tight fit. Great video
Thanks for the vid!! Used your instructions fto dissemble console and shifter, but I used a small self tapping screw with the old assembly and re-attached the spring. Worked like a charm and saved a little $. THanks!!
Just a note to '05 Magnum R/T owners, remove the Ash tray/seat heater switch module FIRST. It makes removing and replacing the shifter much easier. All and all, a great video for fixing this problem. Mine went for 212k miles before it broke.
Great video, purchased the aluminum part at OReilly Auto Parts (Dorman 924-706 $37.00) and installed on my 06' Chry 300. One additional thing you need to do on the 300C. You must remove the three screws in the center console and lift the console up in order to get the shifter unit out of it's location. Everything else was spot on, thanks.
I just did this fix to my 06 charger. It was a tight squeeze but I didn’t have to remove anything other than what was removed in the video, just had to wiggle into the right position and it slid out.
Did it!!! The only thing I would add to this for the 2006 Chrysler 300Hemi is there are two black connectors side by side and strongly reaffirm the suggest to unscrew the center console (pull out the divider and take out 3 screw) so that you can lift it enough to get clearance.
Great instructions. Fixed it in about 20min using your advice. If your doing this in the shade use your phone flashlight to put the nuts back in place. Pretty dark down there. Thanks again!

I hope my comment arrives and you are in good health. God bless you! Thanks to your tutorial I was able to tow my boat again and take my wife on vacation. I was desperate. My vehicle is a 2005 Chrysler 300C. With your video, I was able to successfully make the repair to the shifter in about an hour. Thanks!
This job is a testament to your patience, Duane. The customer is very fortunate to have steady hands like yours on the car!! Well done!!

Thank you.
Your welcome, glad it helped, and thanks for letting me know
The best self fixit I have seen.
Had no idea my shifter was such a piece of plastic junk until now. Chrysler should fix this for free but I know I’m dreaming.
Actually, I've read there is a secret warranty on these.
I don't normally do my own work (time, experience,etc...), but this video was my Bible. thank you so much!
Thanks !!
your welcome, glad it helped, thanks for commenting
Couldn't have asked for a better step by step video. I'm so happy I found this. You saved me a ton of frustration! Thank you!
Thank you SO much!! Saved me hundreds of dollars taking it to the dealer. I too bought the metal one for $38.00 and it worked like a charm!! Have a great day!!
Roger C Hi. Where do you got the replacement part from? Thanks
Glad it helped, thanks for your comments.
I know this video is many years old, but still very valid and current. I wanted to thank you for taking the time to film and explain this process, it saved me nearly $900 (Cad.). I worked like a charm for my '07 Charger SRT8. Again, thank you for this.
Glad it helped, thanks for your comments.
Then I looped a solid piece of copper wire thru the hole, hooked the spring to it and it fixed that.
great work
Thank you, yes it does help.
The only way this video could have been more helpful was if he came and fixed my car. Thanks so much for doing this !!! Great job.
hey you guys rock after me and my wife saw your video on how to fix ,we did our 300 that got stuck on park we thank you so much you help us to save money THANK YOU...
AMAZING that people take this amount of time with detailed instructions to help others. Thank YOU ~
Yes he's good.
Thanks for taking the time to make this video!
what was the name of that piece
On Amazon it is the Dorman 924-706 Chrysler/Dodge Transmission Shift Interlock Latch
+William Knight Thanks
it doesn't matter if it was plastic or metal?
The recall # is K39 2005 - 2007 Dodge Charger, Magnum and Chrysler 300. They will fix it for free if you have one of these vehicles.
Thanks for making this video. Got in my car and the shifter wouldn't budge, I immediately went on RUclips,
I KNEW someone would have a video, to get me on my way
Thanks again
Thank you, RealFixes. With the help of your video, we were able to determine what was causing the shifter to lock up (Chr 300) as well as replace it ourselves.
Got part at amazon. Fixed Chrysler 300. Had to move console back to get shifter out, but worked beautifully thanks to the video!!!
Awesome!!! Just fixed my 2006 300C. Part cost $8.91 at Dodge dealer. Followed video and everything went fine. Great Job!!!!
I just wanted to thank you for posting this video. I did the replacement myself. The whole process took me about a hour and part to replace costs like 14 bucks.
Excellent video. Very informative. Great step by step. No excess talking about things that are not prudent to what you’re trying to show!
You do a GREAT JOB. Lighting and dialog. Thanks....and my grandson will thank you.
Glad it helped
This way very simple. I replaced the plastic interlock for less than $30 on Amazon. I did get frustrated trying to put the shifter back in. I gave up and tried it the next day. I watched another video that showed some extra steps and was able to get it in easily. It was only 5 more screws to remove the console. Slipped right in. Thanks for this video.
I was about to call a tow truck for my Chrysler Pacifica. Mine looks a little different but your video helped me tremendously! Thanks much!!!
thank you real fixes.....What a blessing you are.
Great video, I wish everyone was as thorough as you
Oh my Gosh!!!!
*sweat
This video just helped me out of being stranded, thank god for this and you now I just need to get it really fixed
You are the greatest person on RUclips....you saved me at least $1000.
THANK YOU..
at my place, i have done this to mane of these cars, people freak out when they see how cheap the car is made and this little so called safety device.
Thank you! This happened for the first time tonight as we're trying to get home after a long Christmas with family, and we just wanted to get home. This helped tremendously!
Thanks for the video, I fixed my car using this video and I've never fixed anything on a car. Saved me hundreds of bucks.
Glad to hear it worked for you
Thank you saved me from not being able to go to work!
Thanks a million! Well, actually, thanks 400 bucks, but you get the idea. You produced a very lucid and helpful video. Much appreciated.
Today changed my pinky to a Aluminium pinky, after 4 Hours got it done. Thank you very very much for the video, no Chance i could do it without it.
THanks!!
This is the best video on the Shift problem there is on You tube!...very well explained and easy! Thank you sir!
glad you liked it, thanks for commenting
Your video was so informative. I saved $350 doing it myself. Thank you very much
Just a note to '05 Magnum R/T owners, remove the Ash tray/seat heater switch module FIRST. It makes removing and replacing the shifter much easier.
All and all, a great video for fixing this problem. Mine went for 212k miles before it broke.
Thank you! Your well made video turned a potential cluster of a repair into an easy one!
Cold chance in hell you still visit this site, but where are the 3 screws on console? This is my problem (can't remove shifter) and I can't find them
I just did this fix to my 06 charger. It was a tight squeeze but I didn’t have to remove anything other than what was removed in the video, just had to wiggle into the right position and it slid out.
Did it!!! The only thing I would add to this for the 2006 Chrysler 300Hemi is there are two black connectors side by side and strongly reaffirm the suggest to unscrew the center console (pull out the divider and take out 3 screw) so that you can lift it enough to get clearance.
thanks to this video i can fix my car to leave a lonely place and at night I really appreciate it God bless you
Great instructions. Fixed it in about 20min using your advice. If your doing this in the shade use your phone flashlight to put the nuts back in place. Pretty dark down there.
Thanks again!
