      I read somewhere there is a lifetime recall on this issue. I've been bypassing the shift interlock for a couple of years now lol. It kind of gives me a sense of security though knowing that mostly any person dumb enough to try and steal it won't be smart enough to get it out of park if I decide to leave it running. But I think its time I fix it. Thanks for the informative video, it was very professional and detailed.

    I want to thank you for emphasizing the correct location of the shift interlock (6:50). I was about to install it incorrectly but fortunately came across your video. It saved me probably hours of rework. Much appreciated.

    Thank you so much for the videos, my wife got stranded late last night in her 2005 300. Part 1 of your video showed me to get the car home, Part 2 showed how to fix it. AutoZone had the Dorman metal replacement part in stock, and it was a very simple fix by following your instructions. Wife thinks I am the greatest, even though I told her I watched the videos for the info. Thanks again.
    I would recommend anyone with one of these cars to replace it BEFORE it breaks, you never know when or where that will happen. She just recently took the car on a small road trip and I am so thankful that this part broke here and not hours away. But I suppose most people are only going to find this video after it breaks...I had no idea that this was a recall or any sort of issue.

      Subscribed. I actually saw another of your videos before, racking my brain to think what it was. It looks like you do a lot of Mopar stuff so I assume it was for the 300, but I can't remember any other issues we've had with it besides the sway bar bushings going bad, and getting the front end clunk. I've replaced those 2 times now. So if you have a video of that, maybe that was it.
      Only other issue she's had that I can remember is the wiring for the license plate light slipping down by the muffler and it blowing the fuse for the tail lights. I'm a Ford guy but it's a very nice car, she wanted it for a long time and loves it like I love the F100, but they are a LOT different to work on!
      Can you suggest any other common issues for that 300 that can be addressed before they happen? Thank you again!

    This just happened on my 300 this mornin and I started panicking because I was just driving the car with no issues. Watched both videos and this was 100% spot on the issue. Couldn’t believe it was just a plastic pink piece holding the spring. took maybe two hours of work. But saved me a trip to the dealer/auto repair place. Recommend if you have good beer and tools just do it yourself.

    Thanks for the video. Fixed mine today for a ‘06 Chrysler 300 Limited. I purchased a new aluminum Shift Interlock Latch (Part# 924-706), also know as the pink thingy, at Autozone. They had 1 in stock, cost me $34.99. Could’ve gotten cheaper online but I didn’t want to wait. Thanks for the heads up regarding correct interlock installation positioning, I would have installed incorrectly. Took about 1.5 hours. I’m in California so I know I saved $400+ doing myself.

    Thanks for the video, it was very helpful in repairing a repair that should never have been needed had Chrysler actually used quality parts in their most popular auto. The real troubling thing is that when I contacted Chrusler about my car being stuck in park and immobile, they acted like they had never heard of such a situation and it was also almost a month wait before they could schedule a time for me to bring the car in. Your videeo helped me make the repair with a monetary cost of under $20 (for am aluminum...not plastic part) so....thanks......

    Own a 2005 Chrysler 300 3.5 automatic. I replaced the pink shift interlock latch, spring, and brake safety switch. I did get some relief for a short period of time and then within a month or so the same problem with shifter sticking in park came back. I found out that the real problem (from a mechanic at a transmission shop) is a faulty shift interlock solenoid located inside the gear shift assembly box. As in the video this is the box mechanic takes out of car. I decided to replace the whole gear shift assembly box since the solenoid itself is close to $100 bucks brand new and the gear shift assembly box is around $180. Now, not only does it never stick in park, it rapidly moves out of park without even a second of hesitation. The mechanic told me he replaced hundreds of the boxes over the years.

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  7 лет назад

      tiger355 Never had to replace the shifter for an interlock solenoid yet. The broken link is the only issue I run into and those I have fixed around 40 or so. There are some adjustments to the shift interlock that can be made. Not sure exactly what happened to cause you issue but I can promise I never have had to replace 50 or more for that issue. Glad to see that you got it all worked out in the end and appreciate the update

    • @tiger355
      @tiger355 7 лет назад +1

      Previously, I did a number of adjustments to the shift interlock cable with the white adjustment bracket that mounts in front of the box and this also does provide temporary relief. In the end I never had any real relief until replacing the box. I have found many people never bring up the problem as much with the shifter sticking in park since it is more sporatic. I owned the car 10 yrs and had the sticking problem hundreds of times. With the pink shift interlock latch, spring, and brake safety switch replacement the sticking occurences are reduced but not eliminated. The box replacement eliminated the problem. Of course the older the car I'm sure you would agree the more likely the shift interlock solenoid will fail. Thanks for your reply.

    Bobo This is great. I wish I had the time to watch this before I broke my shiftier pieces inside beside the pink thing. I am gluing it right now but I know it won't hold, so I had order a used one on e-bay but is going to take a week to get here. So I am trying to remember how the lever and the shift rod come into play.. You would think I could find a exploded view of the inter works of the shiftier but I can't seem to find anything. Your video show lot, so I will trial and error it to see if I can get everything back into place so the shiftier will work properly.

    Good video but here is an easy way to get out of park when you get stuck. After you get the trim out the shifter, use a flathead screwdriver to pry the pink clip on the right side of the shifter towards the shifter. You have to repeat it anytime you put the shifter in park.

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  6 лет назад

      The one your speaking of is used if everything is working fine and nothing has gone wrong with the shifter (normal park override). When the pink item in the video brakes.....you can move the one on the right side all you want, doesnt make a difference, it wont come out of park. You have to get the broken piece to move to get it to move.

    Excellent videos. I was able to perform the repair no problem. One question. A day or so after the repair the key got stuck in the ignition. After a few minutes of moving shifter into and out of gear a few times the key came out. Did I knock something out of alignment or adjustment? Has anyone reported this problem? I did not use the plastic part. I used the upgraded aluminum part from Dorman #924-706 and used the spring that came with it. Could it be the problem? Thanks again for the great videos.

      David, MotorCity Mechanic,
      I completed this repair but only with your knowledge and expertise. This was the first time using the trunk release from the inside as I had disconnected the negative lead to the battery and closed the trunk before starting this repair. I cannot thank you enough. I am on the road thanks to you.
      Best Regards Always,

    So if my Dodge Magnum needed that piece would it still going Drive??? Cuz it's thing it's not doing it is going in reverse.... So what you think???

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  6 лет назад

      If the part brakes....you have to physically move the arm inorder to get it out of park and then you can drive it....however the next time you put it back into park....it will be stuck in park and then you have to repeat the procedure to get it out.

    • @brieannajohns5661
      @brieannajohns5661 6 лет назад +1

      MotorCity Mechanic. I have to manually press the pink button on the side of the gear shift to move it all apart to go into drive in neutral but no reverse a transmission was put on it but still no reverse so do you think I part work if I buy it and have somebody put it on it???

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  6 лет назад

      Its one of those things that I would have to feel for myself to see for sure. If you do get it into other gears but reverse is the only issue then you have other problems not related to the shifter. Its going to take someone looking at it to see exactly what the issue is.

    I went to put everything back together and in order to stretch the detent cable to slide back in the parking mechanism, I had to turn my key. Now I can't get my key out the ignition not to mention the car runs a little funny. What am in doing wrong ??

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  7 лет назад

      Installing the shift interlock cable wont have any affect on the running of the vehicle. Sounds like the interlock cable will need to be adjusted. That can be done by lifting up on the white locking piece on the top. Then move the cable slowly with one hand while you try turning the key. Once it works fine.....push down on the white locking sleeve. It make take a time or two to get it just right.

    • @GARB82

    Have a question, I replaced the interlock latch with the metal version. I made sure it was lined up right, and when I had it all put back together, it still doesnt shift. Now it will only shift if I push on the pink side lever. What could be wrong?

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  8 лет назад

      So I assume you did the repair because the pink piece was broken with the spring.....then you replaced with the metal part and now there is an issue. If so then the most likely issue is that you installed the metal piece wrong when it comes to the relationship to the shifter mechanism. If you put it in with the arm in the wrong position then it will not work. Look back in the video at the 6:11 minute mark and I talk about how it should be located. Double check this first.

    • @juliovillarreal6027
      @juliovillarreal6027 8 лет назад

      So I took it apart again, made sure everything was in the right position, and put it all back together, but it still wont shift as it should untill i press the side button. Would i have to adjust the cables? For some reason when i try to shift out of park i can see that the shifter is hitting the white lever that would release it when the side pink button is pushed.

    • @MotorCityMechanic
      @MotorCityMechanic  8 лет назад

      We need to make sure its related to the shift interlock cable. I would remove the cable from the metal piece and then move the metal piece like you would do if it was broken to get it out of park. If okay then we need to make sure the shift interlock cable is working correctly. It does require adjustment. If you email me at david@motorcitymechanic.com I will attach what I have on the adjustment of the cable. Otherwise there isnt anyway to do that here in the comments section

    I'm not a super handy guy, but I can usually hold my own on most projects. when it comes to cars though, I am 90% of the time clueless. I was about to leave for work and my 06 Charger HEMI wouldn't come out of park. I almost ripped the shifter off, I was so pissed. Started googling and found your vid. I was able to get the car moving again and when I got to work I called a friend who works at a Dodge wholesale parts counter. She ordered me the replacement. I was about to call a friend who is a mechanic to come help me out but then I decided it was time to nut up or shut up and do it my damn self. Using your video I was able to get the job done without any issues. My wife came into the garage and asked how it was going. I told her I got the job done and saved us about $500 in labor as well. A surprised expression , and then one of being genuinely impressed. She said well I think you earned yourself a sexy little surprise later. I fixed the car and got some action! God bless you sir!

    Thank You for this quick tutorial. Thursday night, got off the train and ran into the same problem at the train station parking lot. luckily had tools in my trunk and tore out the center console on my 300, which allowed me to manually manipulate things to get the car in gear. Found the Dorman replacement at Pep Boys today for $28 dollars ($16 on amazon but I didn't want to wait). Took the shifter box apart, installed the metal Dorman replacement, put everything back and all's well again. (Thank You for the emphasis on the correct location of the shift interlock as well!!!) Love my 2005 300 limited, 238K miles on it and runs like a champ. But using plastic for tension/spring parts was just dumb of Chrysler. Thanks Again. Tutorial saved me about $200-250 in labor costs for a $16 dollar piece.

    • @MotorCityMechanic

      Was the original piece broke? I assume maybe not. There is only so much I can tell you on my end without being there to check it out. Main thing I would do is check to make sure the brake lights work when you depress the brake pedal. if it doesnt then you issue will be related to the brake switch possibly. Otherwise checking the shifter interlock cable adjustment is another. Otherwise you may need to get a mechanic to check it further.

      Typically no. I recommend taking the cable loose at the shifter and see if you can move the shifter cable to see if the trans goes into park ......if so then the issue is at the shifter. If no change then a possible trans related issue.
