- Hey guysss! Today we're talking flowers! I used to get confused about a lot of the things discussed in this video when I first started growing Hoya! I have had my Hoyas for about a year or less and have been able to get lots of them to flower! My flowers typically last a week, sometimes more, and it totally depends on the plant. I wanted to show y'all my flowers before they closed! I no longer really think Hoya flowering is based on maturity, I really strongly believe it's just how you treat them. Cuttings can even flower! Hoyas are totally cool because of how random and unpredictable they can be with blooming. I hope y'all enjoyed! This was a really fun video to make! Thank you so so much for watching!

Hi Lessya , lacunosa smells exactly like Night Blooming Jasmine - Cestrum nocturnum to me. You can get the green Jasminum nocturnum at Houston Garden Center. Jasminum noctirnum is know as Dama de Noche in the Philippines and other Hispanic countries. And shepherdii smells like Lilacs to me - heavy old lady perfume.

Oh, wow. I had a hoya carnosa for years and years. It would put out so many blooms. I never knew what they really smelled like, but, now that you mention it...tootsie rolls 😂😂😂 that is soo accurate! You're so cute 😚
My Hoya Linearis only smell at night and it smells like lemony vanilla-y goodness, it is legit the best smell I have EVER experienced, I so wish they made perfumes of it 😍
Scents definitely are perceived differently by different people. A person here on youtube claimed their Carnosa smelled like rotten Salami, but I do not agree at all. It is a heavy, sweet smell which can get a bit overpowering sometimes, but lovely nontheless. Nothing like chocolate, though 👀
The Heuschkeliana smells like caramel. It really does.

From what I understand from what others say, these Hoya smell more at night when they open up. But during the day the scent isn’t as strong. I cannot speak from experience though because I just bought my first Hoya and I got an Obovata. I found a wonderful seller on;one from California and the plants are very reasonably priced and huge!

my flower smelled like caramel or burnt sugar, I have heard that depending on growth conditions they would smell different
I have a regular Hoya Carnosa but the flowers are white colour and it have a very light sweet smell. My Hoya Rosita flower smell like a over fermented bread dough and my Hoya Publicalyx Red Button flower smell a bit like Lily

I also can‘t tell a sent of cinamon on my lacunosa😂🤷♀️😅. It just smells flowery, maybe a hint of honey, but I can‘t check right now, her last flower just fell off!
My mom actually is lowkey annoyed when her carnosa flowers, my parents both don't like strong smells. I, on the other hand CAN'T WAIT for my cutting from her plant to bloom! It's making its first peduncles as we speak! 🌱👃

My mum cut the peduncles off of our old giant carnosa because she said it stinks and the nectar is dripping everywhere. 😅I kinda like the the flowers. I licked the nectar off of them when I was a child.😊

To Mathilde 6763, some people insert the blooms inside baggies so that the nectar will drip inside and not damage furniture

I have almost 30 types of Hoya (all acquired within 7 months) and haven’t experienced a bloom yet. Fingers crossed it’ll happen soon!!!
Ummm how to describe “old lady smell”???!! For me it’s a very heavy, musky smell, like the old classic perfumes...Shalimar, Arpege, etc 🤥🌹
Can I use artificial light to try to get my hoya to bloom? My house has no north or south windows. Only east and west. I live in Eastern Washington (the state) and this time of year it us usually overcast every day. I have one Hoya near an east facing sliding door and the other is next to the west facing living room window. Because of the type of window treatment on the slider (east side) it doesn't get quite as much light. I try to adjust the blinds as to get the most light. Can I just turn on the light in the room??

This is a great video idea 👍 I wondered what the different Hoya flowers smelled like too! I'm a new plant Mom and have fallen in love with Hoya's 😍 I just ordered a Lacunosa on Etsy an hour ago and I have a Krinkle 8, Obovata Splash, Australis Ssp. Australis Brookfield on the way in the mail and I bought a Wayetii at a nursery yesterday 😁👍👍👍

My carnosa smells sweet and nektary, it also produces a lot of nectar. All my Hoyas smell more in the evening!

Most H. carnosas smell to me like baby chicken feed or mash that we used to feed the chicks back on the farm. It has molasses in it so maybe that is part of the smell.
Some other nice smelling ones you can try for are H. verticulata or acuta, H. serpens, H. obscura, (smells like fruit loops). H. subclava is said to smell like grape juice, but I could never keep one alive long enough to flower.

I've never heard H lacunosa smell described as cinnamon before. Hoping I will be able to get one one day and check for myself

My regular carnosa with splas, it dosn't smell good at all for me. My sister with the same plant and is pregnant cut of the pedunkles middle of the night, because she couldn't sleep because of the smell, although it was in the next room :O

My shepherdii is in bloom now and it smells like old lady perfume to me. It fills my whole room at night! It has soooo many peduncles! Also was wondering if you had any advice for when the flowers are going to bloom and they all fall off
Fenner Lamm Yay!! For peduncles falling you really just have to watch the water level usually if you let your hoya dry out too much the blooms will blast 🥺💚

@@marisakirisame2366 no i haven't caught COVID, luckily. I've had no sense of smell since I was a kid. I broke my nose at 3 and over the years lost more and more. I actually remember the last time I smelt lilacs fondly

More sun! But go slowly because most will burn in direct afternoon light. Filtered but bright afternoon light or direct morning light is usually best but you have to go a bit slow to get them used to it :)
Lacunosa has never EVER smelled like cinammon to me EITHER!

Ok, I'm totally with you about the lacunosa. I have NO idea where the cinnamon thing came from. It does smell very floral. It reminds me of lilacs or lilies, but softer. And it's not a guy thing, because my husband said the same thing.
I agree 100% lacanosa are the best and easiest to bloom and they do not smell like cinnamon!!!!

Haha! For the longest time, I thought the lacunosa had a delicate floral scent & then I tried smelling it while thinking “cinnamon! Cinnamon! Cinnamon!” & now it smells like cinnamon to me & now I’m sad 🥺

Lovely video wish they invent smell-a-vision lol you might wsnt to get a few flowers i luce in IN snd have to bring in my containers to over winter. It is so exciting when your rose blooms or your cana lily blooms for christmas. Nothing like joliday cactus blooming for you as well
You had mentioned making them bloom. How do you do that? Special fertilizer or additives?
Also, differences in what one person smells compared to what another person smells may have to do with their genes. I do a lot of genealogy and there are several things I've learned about our biological inheritances and that is one of that really stood out to me.

My grandma's hoya carnosas had often abundance of flowers. She gave quite often fertilizer with a high phosphorous content.

Mine didn't smell like that. It had a sweet floral scent but not too sweet, and I love it. I reminds me of a warm summer night breeze. At least that's how it makes me feel when I smell it. Lovely
my hoya kerri spash flowered last month and had a very distinct old lady perfume smell haha
My first and only bloom I got was from my hoya rebecca and it smelled like lemons 😍 at least that's what my nose picked up 😂

Could be fungus or too much sun. These tend to burn really easy!

I just keep looking and looking at my Hoya's and just assumed it's the middle finger (love that description! My lacunosa had a normal floral smell. I didn’t know it was supposed to smell like cinnamon!
