They're are well meaning/innocent men in the story as well (assuming they mainly keep to the book-- which it looks like they are from the trailer as well as from articles about the film).

Kind of disappointed they still haven't fixed the colour gradient of this movie. It's the weakest aspect here and hopefully it doesn't deter viewers from still catching this fantastic drama.
@@hoover728 It's way too jarring and most of the movie takes place indoors in a single setting which is really quite dark and dull to look at for the duration of the movie.
@@anujpramanik1819 When ever I watch a film in black and white I get used to the lack of colouring within a few scenes, for films with rarer colour balances, it takes even less time. Lots of films have different colour balances, some turn the intensity up (comic action movies are most likely to do this), dramas often have lower colour intensity. Some films push the colour towards or away from certain colours (the twilight series most mem-tastically went to the blue). This isn't rare. BTW there is NO "real" true colour in film or even in your mind, its ALL adjusted and balanced in some way, (which is why the black & Blue vs White and Gold dress debate was a thing). If you think there is a "correct colour" you don't know how film or even human colour perception works.
@@maggiemakgill I understand when filmmakers make conscious decisions to use black and white or colour in their projects, but this movie isn't black and white. It has colour, but it's way too desaturated, dark-shadowy and distracting for it's own good. Technical aspects like sound recording and colour scheme need to be seemless enough so as not to be distracting of the story being told. But my personal experience (not to forget a common consensus among many who saw this movie with me) was that it proved to be a hindrance in this case. I genuinely took some time to really get into this movie and I figure that an art film like this would probably alienate more people anyway even before implementing such a drastic colour scheme, which is also not doing it any favour. The story is beautiful anyway. It did not need this sort of desaturated colour gradient. Cinematographer Luc Montpellier makes excellent use of contrasting warm and cold light (from the sunlight and and the lanterns) to show different moods but a lot of it is unfortunately getting washed away by this sort of a palette.
I love everyone involved and will absolutely see this, but please indulge some trailer-based snark: This looks like an SNL parody of an Oscar bait movie - the portentous, whispery voice over, the overhead shots, Frances McDormand peering across a windswept landscape. i Love all these actresses, it will definetly be a film of great performances... i don't really mind the desaturation... but it seem inconsistent, some frames are like Blaclk and white and others are just with low color saturation... maybe all black and white would've been a better choice... Regarding the subject, well... i think is really repetitive... i mean the idea of "Women opressed by men everywhere all the time at once" it is like a broken record... if the audience wants a feminist movie make more movies like "Kill bill", "Arrival" "Aliens" The brave one" "Black Swan" "the house of flying daggers" "Lucy" "Zero dark Thirty" or shows like "House of cards" and "Queen's gambit"... you know... movies about powerfull, independet, intelligent, brave women... not about opressed ones... i think the feminism movement today is trying desperately to impose the narrative of women being opressed all the time, it is not about empowerment or equality anymore (Obviously, because today women have power and independence at least in western society) , it seems they just want to preserve the victimization speech forever... i want my daughter to watch movies of powerfull, competent and smart women... i don't want her to watch a constant propaganda telling her she is a victim... because she isn't.
@@catherinehammond4989 hi Catherine! That's what i'm saying... imagine this movie, with that acting, that cast, that score, but about a danger of the force of nature, problems with the harvest or a Flood, a dangerous animal that hunts at night, a clever or brillant way to survive a drought... a creative way to raise the childrens through the use of imagination, a Group of women talking about philosophy or the wonders of life... a Group of women which Bond together to sign or create... i mean... it is a lot that you can do to inspire and depict women in any other way than opressed by men. Women are sooo soooo much more than that...

It’s not just a trope though. The book this movie was based upon was itself based upon the real events of abuse in a Colombian Mennonite community. It should make you uncomfortable that there are men utilizing patriarchal structures to abuse women.
This Woke thing is cultish. It is as if a movie has to have a Woke theme. The members of the Woke Cult take truly tragic human events and use them for their own advancement and the whole thing has become a vicious cycle with those truly suffering not being served or assisted. The social issues harped upon are unresolved or worse even decades later. It also tragically turns off those who might actually care about those going throught these horrific experiences.
While it looks like an interesting film, it’s sadly another portrayal of “men are evil”. Not really what the world needs right now and frankly has been done a thousand times before. Hollywood elites are so out of touch. Can’t these talented people come up with more nuanced stories about human relationships.
@Alina This is how the outsider modern woman sees it but maybe for the insider they are quite content and living that life, been wife and raising children. This is all an agenda to make all men evil and all woman saints and victim, because God forbid a woman can find satisfaction in choosing a normal life. They can keep their movie , I wont pay a penny to watch it, and this narrative is wearing out, many more women are actually getting the groove of what is going on here; just because the noise of victimhood is loud doesnt mean the crowd is .
