I'm unsure of when this feature came into Logic (I've only been using it for just over a year), in the Mix tab, there's a little function called "Autoselect Automation Parameter in Read Mode". This allows you to select ANY parameter and it instantly shows up under the tracks automation. Pretty much like Ableton's way of selecting parameters. Just click what you want to automate and boom. It does not effect anything else unlike using Touch mode. I personally thought it was a game changer and hopefully it adds to your workflow!
Whoa. Came here hoping to find out how to do automation curve more efficiently and same for select->make new points. I actually learned both, finished the rest of the video and I STILL REMEMBER what I was doing before I left my DAW! That's a pretty radical new concept, Mikael, to just cut the crap and get to the point right away. But are you sure you're not going to get in trouble for that? 😅 anyway I'll subscribe and take my chances. EDIT: wow, well, as far as radical new concepts go, my comment is not one. I see we all agree that this was nice and short and efficient. My comment only differs from the others in that it's longer and wordy and less to the point. Obviously I did that on purpose because the irony is ehhmm, well, you know.
Dude this was so helpful. I have a quick question. I've noticed when I have some form of automation. And I try to increase the volume fader of the track. It automatically bounces back to the original volume position. What the heck LOL any pointers? Is this only for when I have volume automation selected?
0:50 BTW Do you or anybody know if there is snap mode in notation view, like sometimes I wanna place a crotchet (a fourth note), but it inserts itself where the semiquaver (sixteenth note) is? any help would be wildly appreciated, lads, composers))
My biggest frustration with using automation is that it sometimes won't allow me to drag to the value I want. It will jump from -1.8 to -2.4 as I drag it. Someone said to click on the automation point and hold down command as you drag. But that doesn't work for me. It will suddenly jump from -1.8 to -100 if I do that, even though on screen it says I'm at -2.0 or whatever.
Opt+Drag doesn't duplicate the automation for me (10.5). It just selects the closest point to the right to drag. I can't seem to find the key command that works. It's not even listed in preferences.
Hey Mike, great video but I'm not a big fan of lane automation. Does Logic not have the ability to "write to end" so I can set levels with faders or in my plug-ins, then have those settings write for the entire track, start to finish? I'm a Pro Tools convert and really want this, but can't find it anywhere.
hello, I am trying to VIEW automation for all tracks at the same time on logic pro. at the moment it only shows automation for the selected track and is problematic for setting the volumes right. How do we enable automation view for all tracks? I would like to just press "A" an see all volume automation of all my tracks. Thanks
Is it posible to move automation freely? I have made some panning, but now I want to move the automation slightly to one side. However when I drag up and down, the automation only makes the automation narrower or wider...
Haha, thank you Carl. I have a whole series of Logic Pro X Tips and Tricks videos that you might want to check out: ruclips.net/p/PLbvz3L5TqIyyNfe2CZPyKH74X9a9SOckc Sincerely, Mike
For Tip 2, I'm finding I don't need to hold down Option when I drag select to make a multiple-automation-point selection. I'm using Logic Pro 10.5.1. Is this a change in Logic or do I have some preference selected for this? Also note, if I DO hold down option when drag-selecting it (as in this video), it works the same as if I didn't have Option held down. Either way works.
Hello Mikael, Tack again for a very instructive video. Question: Can you transform (copy, move or however you want to call it) track automation to region automation? Let's say, I have a bass drum, I automated its decay in the track over one bar, but would like to copy this 'bass drum bar' with its automation over the entire song: How would you do this? Keep up the good work!
In Tip 4, Lock X-axis while editing, there's a subtle point to remember when you select the point (which I ran into when trying tip 4) - you need to hold the mouse down after you select it - otherwise you'll get a contextual menu after you hold the Control key then click the point with the mouse - and you won't be able to move the point (because the contextual menu's there expecting you to select something in the menu.) I'm using Logic Pro 10.5.1.
thanks for the info, just wondering is there a way to control different automation parameters in different layers of inst. in logic pro ? for ex as you are arranging also record different automations with different layers at once?
Hey Mike, Greetings from London! We're great fans and appreciate all your great tips. We would like to know how to automate instrument and arpeggiator presets. Is that possible? Thanks again!
I really like your video but this was literally just 8 tips lol. I mean tbh I don't care the bonus tip made me watch till the end so I guess it worked :)
Great tips! But what i was wondering is how did you automate plug-ins, like i only want the delay to triger at the end of a sound so it doesn't capture the whole body of the voice just the last nuances
Thank you, this is very helpful!!! I wonder why the Logic developers didn’t make it so that you can just draw automation lines with your mouse! That would really be the easiest, no? Strange Logic didn’t do that, but maybe there is a reason beyond my ken.
You actually can, in many cases at least. After you set the first point, just continue holding down CMD to activate the 2nd tool which I recommend to be "pencil tool" and then "draw". =) PS. I notice you have three section for tools. most of the time you only have two selection. how did you do that. example one tool than with the alt key you get the second one.
Yes, I see you also commented on my video tutorial on that, so I guess you're good. =) Tip: I use separate 3rd tools for the sequencer and the piano roll editor. I like having the velocity tool in the piano roll to add variation to dynamics. Sincerely, Mike
@@arminbagheri1 I think you can use automation trim feature for this. Search for it on Google and try if it works for what you want. =) Sincerely, Mike
Professional Composers automation Trim basically does the same thing, it will touch the automation data but i found the best way and is to group the tracks and you will get a sub track fader...from there you can easily fade up or down without touching the automation data!!!! 🙌🏻
@@arminbagheri1 Something I miss from my days of using Reason is the SSL-mixer. Because that had a dedicated gain/drive knob at the top of each channel strip. The mixer in Logic is somewhat "boring" lol. :P

How, on earth, can I copy my automation data from my modulation to my expression (in region automation)?????
really helpful video thank you.. ..backspace wants to delete the selected audio not the automation for me though.

hey! anybody know how to automate the same plug in setting across multiple tracks in one automation performance?
even an excellent instructor (which is better than my spelling)
The Marquee tip is not working for me. When I make a selection on the volume lane and left click nothing happens. Any ideas?
I can only get it to work on "Track" automation mode . As a workaround you could try this?
Super Helpful, excellent optimal balance of time and detail, you explain a lot but not too fast or slow.
Does anyone know if there is an option to simplify automation after using touch or latch mode to record it live?
What do I do if it insists on snapping even when I have the snap feature turned off???
I refer back to this now and then. It's a great resource!!
Nice Job! I learned a lot and added several tricks to my notes.
any idea how to get the automation to go directly down on the same spot?
Superb tutorial, much appreciated 😊

1. Turn on ur plug-in on ur track

3.Go to Automation Parameter (by default it should say volume)
4. Press where it says ur plug-in

How to change the fader volumes after automating? 🤔
You can add a “gain” insert fx
